The Book of Proverbs, Chapter 22משלי 22

נִבְחָ֣ר שֵׁ֭ם מֵעֹ֣שֶׁר רָ֑ב מִכֶּ֥סֶף וּ֝מִזָּהָ֗ב חֵ֣ן טֽוֹב

A name rather to be chosen than great riches, loving favour rather than silver and gold.

עָשִׁ֣יר וָרָ֣שׁ נִפְגָּ֑שׁוּ עֹשֵׂ֖ה כֻלָּ֣ם יְהוָֽה

The rich and poor meet together: YHWH the maker of them all.

עָר֤וּם רָאָ֣ה רָעָ֣ה ויסתר וְנִסְתָּ֑ר וּ֝פְתָיִ֗ים עָבְר֥וּ וְֽנֶעֱנָֽשׁוּ

A prudent foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.

עֵ֣קֶב עֲ֭נָוָה יִרְאַ֣ת יְהוָ֑ה עֹ֖שֶׁר וְכָב֣וֹד וְחַיִּֽים

By humility the fear of YHWH riches, and honour, and life.

צִנִּ֣ים פַּ֭חִים בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ עִקֵּ֑שׁ שׁוֹמֵ֥ר נַ֝פְשׁ֗וֹ יִרְחַ֥ק מֵהֶֽם

Thorns snares in the way of the froward: he that does keep his soul shall be far from them.

חֲנֹ֣ךְ לַ֭נַּעַר עַל פִּ֣י דַרְכּ֑וֹ גַּ֥ם כִּֽי יַ֝זְקִ֗ין לֹֽא יָס֥וּר מִמֶּֽנָּה

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

עָ֭שִׁיר בְּרָשִׁ֣ים יִמְשׁ֑וֹל וְעֶ֥בֶד לֹ֝וֶ֗ה לְאִ֣ישׁ מַלְוֶֽה

The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower servant to the lender.

זוֹרֵ֣עַ עַ֭וְלָה יקצור יִקְצָר אָ֑וֶן וְשֵׁ֖בֶט עֶבְרָת֣וֹ יִכְלֶֽה

He that soweth iniquity shall reap vanity: and the rod of his anger shall fail.

טֽוֹב עַ֭יִן ה֣וּא יְבֹרָ֑ךְ כִּֽי נָתַ֖ן מִלַּחְמ֣וֹ לַדָּֽל

He that has a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor.

גָּ֣רֵֽשׁ לֵ֭ץ וְיֵצֵ֣א מָד֑וֹן וְ֝יִשְׁבֹּ֗ת דִּ֣ין וְקָלֽוֹן

Cast out the scorner, and contention shall go out; yea, strife and reproach shall cease.

אֹהֵ֥ב טהור טְהָר לֵ֑ב חֵ֥ן שְׂ֝פָתָ֗יו רֵעֵ֥הוּ מֶֽלֶךְ

He that loveth pureness of heart, the grace of his lips the king his friend.

עֵינֵ֣י יְ֭הוָה נָ֣צְרוּ דָ֑עַת וַ֝יְסַלֵּ֗ף דִּבְרֵ֥י בֹגֵֽד

The eyes of YHWH preserve knowledge, and he overthroweth the words of the transgressor.

אָמַ֣ר עָ֭צֵל אֲרִ֣י בַח֑וּץ בְּת֥וֹךְ רְ֝חֹב֗וֹת אֵֽרָצֵֽחַ

The slothful says, a lion without, I shall be slain in the streets.

שׁוּחָ֣ה עֲ֭מֻקָּה פִּ֣י זָר֑וֹת זְע֥וּם יְ֝הוָ֗ה יפול יִפָּל שָֽׁם

The mouth of strange women a deep pit: he that is abhorred of YHWH shall fall therein.

אִ֭וֶּלֶת קְשׁוּרָ֣ה בְלֶב נָ֑עַר שֵׁ֥בֶט מ֝וּסָ֗ר יַרְחִיקֶ֥נָּה מִמֶּֽנּוּ

Foolishness bound in the heart of a child; the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

עֹ֣שֵֽׁק דָּ֭ל לְהַרְבּ֣וֹת ל֑וֹ נֹתֵ֥ן לְ֝עָשִׁ֗יר אַךְ לְמַחְסֽוֹר

He that oppresseth the poor to increase his he that giveth to the rich, surely to want.

הַ֥ט אָזְנְךָ֗ וּ֭שְׁמַע דִּבְרֵ֣י חֲכָמִ֑ים וְ֝לִבְּךָ֗ תָּשִׁ֥ית לְדַעְתִּֽי

Bow down your ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply your heart to my knowledge.

כִּֽי נָ֭עִים כִּֽי תִשְׁמְרֵ֣ם בְּבִטְנֶ֑ךָ יִכֹּ֥נוּ יַ֝חְדָּ֗ו עַל שְׂפָתֶֽיךָ

For a pleasant thing if you keep them within you; they shall withal be fitted in your lips.

לִהְי֣וֹת בַּ֭יהוָה מִבְטַחֶ֑ךָ הוֹדַעְתִּ֖יךָ הַיּ֣וֹם אַף אָֽתָּה

That your trust may be in YHWH, I have made known to you this day, even to you.

הֲלֹ֤א כָתַ֣בְתִּי לְ֭ךָ שלשום שָׁלִישִׁ֑ים בְּמ֖וֹעֵצֹ֣ת וָדָֽעַת

Have not I written to you excellent things in counsels and knowledge,

לְהוֹדִֽיעֲךָ֗ קֹ֭שְׁטְ אִמְרֵ֣י אֱמֶ֑ת לְהָשִׁ֥יב אֲמָרִ֥ים אֱ֝מֶ֗ת לְשֹׁלְחֶֽיךָ

That I might make you know the certainty of the words of truth; that you mightest answer the words of truth to them that send to you?

אַֽל תִּגְזָל דָּ֭ל כִּ֣י דַל ה֑וּא וְאַל תְּדַכֵּ֖א עָנִ֣י בַשָּֽׁעַר

Rob not the poor, because he poor: neither oppress the afflicted in the gate:

כִּֽי יְ֭הוָה יָרִ֣יב רִיבָ֑ם וְקָבַ֖ע אֶת קֹבְעֵיהֶ֣ם נָֽפֶשׁ

For YHWH will plead their cause, and spoil the soul of those that spoiled them.

אַל תִּ֭תְרַע אֶת בַּ֣עַל אָ֑ף וְאֶת אִ֥ישׁ חֵ֝מוֹת לֹ֣א תָבֽוֹא

Make no friendship with an angry man; and with a furious man you shall not go:

פֶּן תֶּאֱלַ֥ף ארחתו אֹֽרְחֹתָ֑יו וְלָקַחְתָּ֖ מוֹקֵ֣שׁ לְנַפְשֶֽׁךָ

Lest you learn his ways, and get a snare to your soul.

אַל תְּהִ֥י בְתֹֽקְעֵי כָ֑ף בַּ֝עֹרְבִ֗ים מַשָּׁאֽוֹת

Be not you of them that strike hands, of them that are sureties for debts.

אִם אֵֽין לְךָ֥ לְשַׁלֵּ֑ם לָ֥מָּה יִקַּ֥ח מִ֝שְׁכָּבְךָ֗ מִתַּחְתֶּֽיךָ

If you have nothing to pay, why should he take away your bed from under you?

אַל תַּ֭סֵּג גְּב֣וּל עוֹלָ֑ם אֲשֶׁ֖ר עָשׂ֣וּ אֲבוֹתֶֽיךָ

Remove not the ancient landmark, which your fathers have set.

חָזִ֡יתָ אִ֤ישׁ מָ֘הִ֤יר בִּמְלַאכְתּ֗וֹ לִֽפְנֵֽי מְלָכִ֥ים יִתְיַצָּ֑ב בַּל יִ֝תְיַצֵּב לִפְנֵ֥י חֲשֻׁכִּֽים

Seest you a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean .
