The Book of Job, Chapter 40איוב 40

וַיַּ֖עַן יְהוָ֥ה אֶת אִיּ֗וֹב וַיֹּאמַֽר

Moreover YHWH answered Job, and said,

הֲ֭רֹב עִם שַׁדַּ֣י יִסּ֑וֹר מוֹכִ֖יחַ אֱל֣וֹהַּ יַעֲנֶֽנָּה

Shall he that contendeth with the Almighty instruct ? he that reproveth God, let him answer it.

וַיַּ֖עַן אִיּ֥וֹב אֶת יְהוָ֗ה וַיֹּאמַֽר

Then Job answered YHWH, and said,

הֵ֣ן קַ֭לֹּתִי מָ֣ה אֲשִׁיבֶ֑ךָּ יָ֝דִ֗י שַׂ֣מְתִּי לְמוֹ פִֽי

Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer you? I will lay mine hand upon my mouth.

אַחַ֣ת דִּ֭בַּרְתִּי וְלֹ֣א אֶֽעֱנֶ֑ה וּ֝שְׁתַּ֗יִם וְלֹ֣א אוֹסִֽיף

Once have I spoken; but I will not answer: yea, twice; but I will proceed no further.

וַיַּֽעַן יְהוָ֣ה אֶת אִ֭יּוֹב מנ סערה מִ֥ן סְעָרָ֗ה וַיֹּאמַֽר

Then answered YHWH to Job out of the whirlwind, and said,

אֱזָר נָ֣א כְגֶ֣בֶר חֲלָצֶ֑יךָ אֶ֝שְׁאָלְךָ֗ וְהוֹדִיעֵֽנִי

Gird up your loins now like a man: I will demand of you, and declare you to me.

הַ֭אַף תָּפֵ֣ר מִשְׁפָּטִ֑י תַּ֝רְשִׁיעֵ֗נִי לְמַ֣עַן תִּצְדָּֽק

Wilt you also disannul my judgment? will you condemn me, that you mayest be righteous?

וְאִם זְר֖וֹעַ כָּאֵ֥ל לָ֑ךְ וּ֝בְק֗וֹל כָּמֹ֥הוּ תַרְעֵֽם

Hast you an arm like God? or canst you thunder with a voice like him?

עֲדֵ֥ה נָ֣א גָֽא֣וֹן וָגֹ֑בַהּ וְה֖וֹד וְהָדָ֣ר תִּלְבָּֽשׁ

Deck thyself now majesty and excellency; and array thyself with glory and beauty.

הָ֭פֵץ עֶבְר֣וֹת אַפֶּ֑ךָ וּרְאֵ֥ה כָל גֵּ֝אֶ֗ה וְהַשְׁפִּילֵֽהוּ

Cast abroad the rage of your wrath: and behold every one proud, and abase him.

רְאֵ֣ה כָל גֵּ֭אֶה הַכְנִיעֵ֑הוּ וַהֲדֹ֖ךְ רְשָׁעִ֣ים תַּחְתָּֽם

Look on every one proud, bring him low; and tread down the wicked in their place.

טָמְנֵ֣ם בֶּעָפָ֣ר יָ֑חַד פְּ֝נֵיהֶ֗ם חֲבֹ֣שׁ בַּטָּמֽוּן

Hide them in the dust together; bind their faces in secret.

וְגַם אֲנִ֥י אוֹדֶ֑ךָּ כִּֽי תוֹשִׁ֖עַ לְךָ֣ יְמִינֶֽךָ

Then will I also confess to you that your own right hand can save you.

הִנֵּה נָ֣א בְ֭הֵמוֹת אֲשֶׁר עָשִׂ֣יתִי עִמָּ֑ךְ חָ֝צִ֗יר כַּבָּקָ֥ר יֹאכֵֽל

Behold now behemoth, which I made with you; he eateth grass as an ox.

הִנֵּה נָ֣א כֹח֣וֹ בְמָתְנָ֑יו וְ֝אֹנ֗וֹ בִּשְׁרִירֵ֥י בִטְנֽוֹ

Lo now, his strength in his loins, and his force in the navel of his belly.

יַחְפֹּ֣ץ זְנָב֣וֹ כְמוֹ אָ֑רֶז גִּידֵ֖י פחדו פַחֲדָ֣יו יְשֹׂרָֽגוּ

He moveth his tail like a cedar: the sinews of his stones are wrapped together.

עֲ֭צָמָיו אֲפִיקֵ֣י נְחוּשָׁ֑ה גְּ֝רָמָ֗יו כִּמְטִ֥יל בַּרְזֶֽל

His bones strong pieces of brass; his bones like bars of iron.

ה֭וּא רֵאשִׁ֣ית דַּרְכֵי אֵ֑ל הָ֝עֹשׂוֹ יַגֵּ֥שׁ חַרְבּֽוֹ

He the chief of the ways of God: he that made him can make his sword to approach .

כִּֽי ב֭וּל הָרִ֣ים יִשְׂאוּ ל֑וֹ וְֽכָל חַיַּ֥ת הַ֝שָּׂדֶ֗ה יְשַֽׂחֲקוּ שָֽׁם

Surely the mountains bring him forth food, where all the beasts of the field play.

תַּֽחַת צֶאֱלִ֥ים יִשְׁכָּ֑ב בְּסֵ֖תֶר קָנֶ֣ה וּבִצָּֽה

He lieth under the shady trees, in the covert of the reed, and fens.

יְסֻכֻּ֣הוּ צֶאֱלִ֣ים צִֽלֲל֑וֹ יְ֝סֻבּ֗וּהוּ עַרְבֵי נָֽחַל

The shady trees cover him their shadow; the willows of the brook compass him about.

הֵ֤ן יַעֲשֹׁ֣ק נָ֭הָר לֹ֣א יַחְפּ֑וֹז יִבְטַ֓ח כִּֽי יָגִ֖יחַ יַרְדֵּ֣ן אֶל פִּֽיהוּ

Behold, he drinketh up a river, hasteth not: he trusteth that he can draw up Jordan into his mouth.

בְּעֵינָ֥יו יִקָּחֶ֑נּוּ בְּ֝מֽוֹקְשִׁ֗ים יִנְקָב אָֽף

He taketh it with his eyes: nose pierceth through snares.

תִּמְשֹׁ֣ךְ לִוְיָתָ֣ן בְּחַכָּ֑ה וּ֝בְחֶ֗בֶל תַּשְׁקִ֥יעַ לְשֹׁנֽוֹ

Canst you draw out leviathan with an hook? or his tongue with a cord you lettest down?

הֲתָשִׂ֣ים אַגְמ֣וֹן בְּאַפּ֑וֹ וּ֝בְח֗וֹחַ תִּקּ֥וֹב לֶֽחֱיוֹ

Canst you put an hook into his nose? or bore his jaw through with a thorn?

הֲיַרְבֶּ֣ה אֵ֭לֶיךָ תַּחֲנוּנִ֑ים אִם יְדַבֵּ֖ר אֵלֶ֣יךָ רַכּֽוֹת

Will he make many supplications to you? will he speak soft to you?

הֲיִכְרֹ֣ת בְּרִ֣ית עִמָּ֑ךְ תִּ֝קָּחֶ֗נּוּ לְעֶ֣בֶד עוֹלָֽם

Will he make a covenant with you? will you take him for a servant for ever?

הַֽתְשַׂחֶק בּ֭וֹ כַּצִּפּ֑וֹר וְ֝תִקְשְׁרֶ֗נּוּ לְנַעֲרוֹתֶֽיךָ

Wilt you play with him as a bird? or will you bind him for your maidens?

יִכְר֣וּ עָ֭לָיו חַבָּרִ֑ים יֶ֝חֱצ֗וּהוּ בֵּ֣ין כְּֽנַעֲנִֽים

Shall the companions make a banquet of him? shall they part him among the merchants?

הַֽתְמַלֵּ֣א בְשֻׂכּ֣וֹת עוֹר֑וֹ וּבְצִלְצַ֖ל דָּגִ֣ים רֹאשֽׁוֹ

Canst you fill his skin with barbed irons? or his head with fish spears?

שִׂים עָלָ֥יו כַּפֶּ֑ךָ זְכֹ֥ר מִ֝לְחָמָ֗ה אַל תּוֹסַֽף

Lay your hand upon him, remember the battle, do no more.
