Job 23 (17 verses in the MT) opens: Then Job answered and said, The middle of the chapter continues: On the left hand, where he does work, but I cannot behold : he hideth himself on the right hand, that I cannot see : It closes: Because I was not cut off before the darkness, has he covered the darkness from my face.

Translation & textual notes

Job 23 comprises 17 verses in MT order. Movement I (vv. 1-4) — Then Job answered and said. Then Job answered and said, Even to day my complaint bitter: my stroke is heavier than my groaning. Oh that I knew where I might find him! I might come to his seat! I would order cause before him, and fill my mouth with arguments. Movement II (vv. 5-8) — I would know the words he would answer me, and understand what he would. I would know the words he would answer me, and understand what he would say to me. Will he plead against me with great power? No; but he would put in me. There the righteous might dispute with him; so should I be delivered for ever from my judge. Behold, I go forward, but he not ; and backward, but I cannot perceive him: Movement III (vv. 9-12) — On the left hand, where he does work, but I cannot behold : he hideth hi. On the left hand, where he does work, but I cannot behold : he hideth himself on the right hand, that I cannot see : But he knoweth the way that I take: he has tried me, I shall come forth as gold. My foot has held his steps, his way have I kept, and not declined. Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his. Movement IV (vv. 13-16) — But he in one , and who can turn him? and his soul desireth, even he doe. But he in one , and who can turn him? and his soul desireth, even he doeth. For he performeth appointed for me: and many such with him. Therefore am I troubled at his presence: when I consider, I am afraid of him.
