The Book of Numbers, Chapter 27במדבר 27

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

A chapter of transition: women's bold petition reshapes Israel's inheritance law by direct divine ruling, while Moses' own mortality is announced alongside his selfless prayer for a shepherd to replace him. Joshua receives Moses' Spirit-marked commissioning — laid-on hand(s), transferred authority (הוֹד), and Urim-guided leadership — as the wilderness generation prepares for a leader who is not Moses.

Translation & textual notes

Numbers 27 is textually stable in the MT; the Samaritan Pentateuch and LXX show only minor variants (orthography of the daughters' names, small pluses in the genealogical chain of v. 1) with no bearing on sense. The chapter's real interest is legal-historical rather than text-critical. The daughters' petition (vv. 1-11) is Torah's paradigm case of law generated by petition rather than prior legislation: Moses has no ready ruling and must bring the מִשְׁפָּט itself before YHWH (v. 5), whose verdict — 'the daughters of Zelophehad speak rightly (כֵּן)' — both vindicates the women's legal reasoning and yields a permanent succession statute (חֻקַּת מִשְׁפָּט, v. 11): son, then daughter, then brothers, then father's brothers, then nearest kinsman. It is revisited and qualified in Num. 36 (tribal-endogamy proviso) and remembered in Josh. 17:3-6 — a rare instance of women's direct legal agency reshaping Israelite law. Also worth noting: the hand(s) variation between v. 18's command ('lay your hand,' singular יָדְךָ) and v. 23's narration ('he laid his hands,' dual יָדָיו) is most plausibly the ordinary Hebrew dual for a person's two hands rather than a deliberate discrepancy, though it has invited comment. Versification follows the MT.

Then the daughters of Zelophehad son of Hepher, son of Gilead, son of Machir, son of Manasseh, of the clans of Manasseh son of Joseph, drew near — and these are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.

Pericope-opening narrative sequencewə- (wayyiqtol)
A wayyiqtol verb opens a new pericope; the extended five-generation patronymic chain (Zelophehad-Hepher-Gilead-Machir-Manasseh-Joseph) establishes the daughters' legitimate tribal standing before naming them, since tribal land-right is exactly what is at issue in the case that follows.

Narrative — chapter's closing act; note the hand(s) variationwə- (wayyiqtol)
Closes the chapter with the actual laying on of hands — plural יָדָיו here versus singular יָדְךָ in the command of v. 18, most likely just the natural dual for 'hands' in narration rather than a contradiction — and the final formula 'as the LORD had spoken through Moses' seals both the succession and, retrospectively, the whole chapter's chain of divine speech, Mosaic mediation, and public enactment.
