The Book of Numbers, Chapter 26במדבר 26

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The second census, on the plains of Moab: a new generation numbered clan by clan, totaling 601,730. Dathan, Abiram, and Korah are recalled — though Korah's sons survived — and Zelophehad's five daughters are named, seeding ch. 27. Land is divided by lot, proportional to these numbers; Levites inherit none. Of the first census, only Caleb and Joshua remain.

Translation & textual notes

Numbers 26 is textually stable in the MT but repays attention on several points. The most conspicuous is v. 9's ketiv/qere: the consonantal text קרואי ('those called', a Qal passive participle of קרא) is read instead as קְרִיאֵי, a distinct noun 'renowned/summoned ones' — a genuine, minor crux in describing Dathan and Abiram. The recurring numeral אֶלֶף ('thousand') structuring every tribal total and the 601,730 grand sum (v. 51) sits at the center of the long-standing census-numbers debate: some scholars read אֶלֶף here, as elsewhere in the wilderness narratives, as a smaller military or clan unit rather than literally 1,000, which would substantially reduce the implied population without emending the consonants. Clan-founder names recur with minor spelling variation against the parallel genealogies of Gen 46 and Exod 6 (e.g. Ozni/Ezbon, Arod/Ard, Jashub/Iob) — ordinary onomastic drift between sources rather than corruption. The notice that 'the sons of Korah did not die' (v. 11) is brief but consequential: it alone supplies the ancestry later claimed by the Korahite psalms (42, 44-49, 84-85, 87-88) and the temple singers of Chronicles. Versification follows the MT throughout.

New divine speech opening the chapterasyndeton
The chapter opens with the standard revelation formula. The addressee pair — Moses and Eleazar, not Moses and Aaron — silently registers that Aaron has died on Hor (20:22-29) and the priesthood has passed; the second census will be supervised by the new generation's priest, matching its new generation of laity.

Resumptive restatement of the age threshold, grounding it in precedentasyndeton
A syntactically elliptical verse (no finite main verb of its own): it resumes the age-clause of v. 2 and grounds the whole procedure in the precedent of the first census, כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוָּה יְהוָה — implicitly cross-referencing 1:1-3. The trailing phrase 'who came out from Egypt' pointedly frames this second census as counting the generation born after that one died out (cf. 14:29-35; 26:64-65).

And the sons of Eliab: Nemuel, and Dathan, and Abiram — this is the Dathan and Abiram, chosen ones of the congregation, who contended against Moses and against Aaron in the company of Korah, when they contended against YHWH.

Flashback notice embedded in the genealogyasyndeton
The census pauses its formulaic list to recall Numbers 16 in full: Dathan and Abiram, Reubenite kinsmen of Korah's Levitical rebellion, who challenged Moses and Aaron's authority and, in doing so, defied YHWH himself. The notice functions as a warning appended to the very generation being counted — these names carry forward the memory of judgment even as new numbers are taken.

A terse, emphatic exception: Korah's own sons survived the judgment that swallowed their father. This one clause is the textual root of the Korahite line that appears throughout Chronicles as temple gatekeepers and singers (1 Chr 6:22-38; 9:19) and stands behind the eleven psalms headed 'of the sons of Korah' (Pss 42, 44-49, 84-85, 87-88) — judgment on the father did not extend to the sons.

Simeon collapses from 59,300 in the first census (1:23) to 22,200 here — by far the steepest decline of any tribe, more than halved. The text does not explain it directly, but the juxtaposition with the plague notice of 25:9 and the naming of a Simeonite chieftain, Zimri, among the Baal-Peor offenders (25:14) strongly implies the tribe bore the brunt of that judgment.

The sons of Judah: Er and Onan; and Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan.

Opens the Judah section with a genealogical asideasyndeton
Before listing Judah's surviving clans, the text notes that his two eldest sons died childless in Canaan (Gen 38:7-10) — Er for wickedness, Onan for refusing levirate duty to Tamar — so neither founds a clan; the census, like Genesis, records the family's early loss before its later multiplication.

Genealogical exception planting the seed for ch. 27asyndeton
A deliberate anomaly within the formulaic clan-list: Zelophehad founds no clan of his own because he has no sons — but his five daughters are named individually, unusual in a census otherwise organized entirely by male lines. Ephraim falls from 40,500 (1:33) to 32,500 — a notable decline, the reverse of his brother Manasseh's surge (v. 34), quietly inverting Jacob's blessing-order (Gen 48:14, 19-20) in the census's raw numbers. The verse then closes the Joseph section as a whole with a second 'these are' formula, bracketing Manasseh and Ephraim together as Joseph's two tribes.

Nonetheless, the land shall be divided by lot; according to the names of their ancestral tribes they shall inherit.

Qualifies/balances the proportional principle with the lotאַךְ
The adversative אַךְ ('nonetheless, yet') signals that proportional sizing (v. 54) does not mean tribes choose their own territory: WHICH land each tribe gets is decided by גּוֹרָל, sacred lot — removing human negotiation and placing the outcome directly in YHWH's hand (cf. Prov 16:33). The two principles combine: lot determines location, population determines size (v. 56 resolves the apparent tension).

Levi is counted separately from the twelve tribes just totaled (v. 51), exactly as in ch. 3-4 — Levites receive no territorial נַחֲלָה (v. 62) and so fall outside the land-division arithmetic of vv. 52-56. The three clans (Gershon, Kohath, Merari) are Levi's own three sons (Gen 46:11; Exod 6:16).

A second, denser Levite clan list drawing on grandsons across all three linesasyndeton
Unlike v. 57's three-clan overview, this verse lists five sub-clans without individual founder-naming formulas: Libni and Shimei descend from Gershon; Hebron (with Amram, Izhar, Uzziel) from Kohath; Mahli and Mushi from Merari (cf. Exod 6:17-19). The verse then singles out Kohath's line specifically — Amram is named as his son, setting up the priestly genealogy of vv. 59-60 that reaches Moses and Aaron themselves.

The priestly family's genealogy, embedded within the Levite censusasyndeton
A remarkable notice: Jochebed is called 'daughter of Levi' literally, born to Levi himself in Egypt (making her Amram's aunt as well as wife by this reading, or more likely using 'daughter' loosely for descendant) — she thus bridges the very first and the current generation of Levites. Her children are the towering trio of the exodus generation: Aaron the priest, Moses the lawgiver, and Miriam the prophetess (Exod 15:20).

The Levite total (23,000) uses a different age threshold — a month old, not twenty years (v. 2) — since Levites are numbered for service, not for war (cf. 3:15). The verse states twice, almost redundantly, that they are excluded from 'the sons of Israel' count and receive no נַחֲלָה: their portion is YHWH and the offerings themselves (18:20), not land.

States the generational verdict directlyasyndeton
The chapter's theological center of gravity: not one man of the Sinai census (ch. 1, taken by Moses and Aaron) survives among 'these' just counted. The pairing 'Moses and Aaron' (not Eleazar) precisely marks the contrast with vv. 1, 63 — Aaron himself belongs to the generation that has died, replaced by his son.

For YHWH had said of them, 'They shall surely die in the wilderness'; and not a man was left of them, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

Explanatory conclusion, sealing the sentence of ch. 14כִּי
The chapter's final word explicitly cites the oath of 14:28-35 (after the spies' report) as the cause of the wholesale generational death — and names its two exceptions, Caleb and Joshua, the sole faithful spies (13:30; 14:6-9, 24, 30, 38). Their survival, set against 'not a man' of everyone else, is the census's ultimate proof-text: the second count is quite literally a new people, purged of the unbelieving generation and led forward by the two who trusted YHWH's promise.
