The Book of Numbers, Chapter 28במדבר 28

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The fixed public-offering calendar opens with YHWH's offerings named His own food (v. 2) and the daily tamid — two lambs, morning and evening, with grain and wine libations (v. 7's שֵׁכָר a lasting crux). Sabbath, new moon, Passover/Unleavened Bread, and Firstfruits additions follow, each supplementing, never replacing, the daily rite, each closing with its own sin offering and the fixed formula of soothing aroma to the LORD.

Translation & textual notes

Numbers 28 (with 29) is a precise liturgical table listing the fixed public offerings of the cultic calendar: daily, Sabbath, new moon, Passover/Unleavened Bread, and Firstfruits/Weeks; ch. 29 continues with Trumpets, the Day of Atonement, and Booths. The MT is textually stable throughout; the LXX largely agrees in content though it sometimes reorders clauses and renders מוֹעֵד with heortē rather than a calque. The chapter's most debated crux is v. 7's נֶסֶךְ שֵׁכָר, 'a libation of שֵׁכָר' — elsewhere שֵׁכָר denotes 'strong drink, intoxicant' (Lev 10:9; Isa 5:11; 28:7) distinct from יַיִן 'wine', yet the parallel libations of vv. 14, 28:20 and Lev 23:13 all specify יַיִן; most take שֵׁכָר here as an archaic or poetic synonym for the grape-libation rather than evidence of a separate fermented drink-offering. A second recurring feature is the anthropomorphic offering-formula of v. 2, קָרְבָּנִי לַחְמִי לְאִשַּׁי, 'my offering, my food for my fire-offerings' — Israel's offerings are boldly called YHWH's own food, an idiom the chapter does not soften even as רֵיחַ נִיחֹחַ ('soothing aroma') and the technical term אִשֶּׁה keep the image cultic rather than crudely literal. Third, the recurring adverbial תָּמִיד ('continual, regular') names the daily whole-burnt offering that anchors every other unit in the chapter as an ADDITION (עַל, מִלְּבַד) rather than a replacement — the structuring principle vv. 10, 15, 23, 31 all restate. Versification follows the MT throughout.

The imperative צַו launches Moses' charge to Israel; the divine first-person קָרְבָּנִי לַחְמִי לְאִשַּׁי sets the chapter's premise — Israel's offerings are, anthropomorphically, YHWH's own 'food' — to be brought תִּשְׁמְרוּ ('you shall take care') at each offering's own בְּמוֹעֲדוֹ ('appointed time'), the rubric the rest of the chapter fills in calendrically.
