The Book of Leviticus, Chapter 24ויקרא 24

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Perpetual sanctuary duties — the tended lamp and the twelve loaves of the Presence — frame a narrative crux: a man of mixed parentage blasphemes the Name in a camp brawl and is stoned by the whole congregation, the case generalized into the lex talionis and one law binding native and sojourner alike.

Translation & textual notes

Leviticus 24 gathers three distinct materials under one chapter division. Vv. 1-9 repeat, almost verbatim, tabernacle instructions for the lamp (Exod 27:20-21) and table (Exod 25:23-30) already given at Sinai; the repetition frames the narrative that follows, since a unit on the sanctity of the Name and the divine presence naturally precedes a crime against that same Name. Vv. 10-23 contain the Holiness Code's only narrative, and its key verb נָקַב (vv.11, 16) is a genuine crux: the root means 'to pierce, bore through', and whether it here denotes simply pronouncing the Tetragrammaton aloud (later rabbinic tradition, hence the avoidance of uttering יהוה) or cursing/blaspheming it outright (so most modern versions, reading it with the following וַיְקַלֵּל 'and cursed') remains disputed; the euphemistic vagueness may be deliberate. The talion formula of vv.17-22 — 'fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth' — is likewise contested: whether it mandates literal physical retribution or, read alongside v.18's explicitly monetary compensation for a slain animal, functions as a ceiling later commuted to damages (the classical rabbinic reading, b. Bava Qamma 83b-84a) cannot be settled from the Hebrew alone. The chapter's insistence that native (אֶזְרָח) and sojourner (גֵּר) share one מִשְׁפָּט is textually stable, and pointed, given that the offender is himself of mixed Israelite-Egyptian parentage. Versification follows the MT.
