Theme

Jonah 2 (11 verses in the MT) opens: Now YHWH had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. The middle of the chapter continues: The waters compassed me about, to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head. It closes: And YHWH spake to the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry .

Jonah 2 comprises 11 verses in MT order. Movement I (vv. 1-4) — Now YHWH had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. Now YHWH had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. Then Jonah prayed to YHWH his God out of the fish's belly, And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction to YHWH, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, you heardest my voice. For you had cast me into the deep, in the. Movement II (vv. 5-8) — Then I said, I am cast out of your sight; yet I will look again toward y. I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars about me for ever: yet have you brought up my life from corruption, O YHWH my God.. Movement III (vv. 9-11) — They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy. They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy. But I will sacrifice to you with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that I have vowed. Salvation of YHWH. And YHWH spake to the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry .
