The Book of Job, Chapter 14איוב 14

אָ֭דָם יְל֣וּד אִשָּׁ֑ה קְצַ֥ר יָ֝מִ֗ים וּֽשְׂבַֽע רֹֽגֶז

Man born of a woman of few days, and full of trouble.

כְּצִ֣יץ יָ֭צָא וַיִּמָּ֑ל וַיִּבְרַ֥ח כַּ֝צֵּ֗ל וְלֹ֣א יַעֲמֽוֹד

He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.

אַף עַל זֶ֭ה פָּקַ֣חְתָּ עֵינֶ֑ךָ וְאֹ֘תִ֤י תָבִ֖יא בְמִשְׁפָּ֣ט עִמָּֽךְ

And dost you open your eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with you?

מִֽי יִתֵּ֣ן טָ֭הוֹר מִטָּמֵ֗א לֹ֣א אֶחָֽד

Who can bring a clean out of an unclean? not one.

אִ֥ם חֲרוּצִ֨ים יָמָ֗יו מִֽסְפַּר חֳדָשָׁ֥יו אִתָּ֑ךְ חקו חֻקָּ֥יו עָ֝שִׂ֗יתָ וְלֹ֣א יַעֲבֽוֹר

Seeing his days determined, the number of his months with you, you have appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;

שְׁעֵ֣ה מֵעָלָ֣יו וְיֶחְדָּ֑ל עַד יִ֝רְצֶ֗ה כְּשָׂכִ֥יר יוֹמֽוֹ

Turn from him, that he may rest, till he shall accomplish, as an hireling, his day.

כִּ֤י יֵ֥שׁ לָעֵ֗ץ תִּ֫קְוָ֥ה אִֽם יִ֭כָּרֵת וְע֣וֹד יַחֲלִ֑יף וְ֝יֹֽנַקְתּ֗וֹ לֹ֣א תֶחְדָּֽל

For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.

אִם יַזְקִ֣ין בָּאָ֣רֶץ שָׁרְשׁ֑וֹ וּ֝בֶעָפָ֗ר יָמ֥וּת גִּזְעֽוֹ

Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground;

מֵרֵ֣יחַ מַ֣יִם יַפְרִ֑חַ וְעָשָׂ֖ה קָצִ֣יר כְּמוֹ נָֽטַע

through the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant.

וְגֶ֣בֶר יָ֭מוּת וַֽיֶּחֱלָ֑שׁ וַיִּגְוַ֖ע אָדָ֣ם וְאַיּֽוֹ

But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where he?

אָֽזְלוּ מַ֭יִם מִנִּי יָ֑ם וְ֝נָהָ֗ר יֶחֱרַ֥ב וְיָבֵֽשׁ

the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up:

וְאִ֥ישׁ שָׁכַ֗ב וְֽלֹא יָ֫ק֥וּם עַד בִּלְתִּ֣י שָׁ֭מַיִם לֹ֣א יָקִ֑יצוּ וְלֹֽא יֵ֝עֹ֗רוּ מִשְּׁנָתָֽם

So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.

מִ֤י יִתֵּ֨ן בִּשְׁא֬וֹל תַּצְפִּנֵ֗נִי תַּ֭סְתִּירֵנִי עַד שׁ֣וּב אַפֶּ֑ךָ תָּ֤שִׁ֥ית לִ֖י חֹ֣ק וְתִזְכְּרֵֽנִי

O that you wouldest hide me in the grave, that you wouldest keep me secret, until your wrath be past, that you wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!

אִם יָמ֥וּת גֶּ֗בֶר הֲיִ֫חְיֶ֥ה כָּל יְמֵ֣י צְבָאִ֣י אֲיַחֵ֑ל עַד בּ֝֗וֹא חֲלִיפָתִֽי

If a man die, shall he live ? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.

תִּ֭קְרָא וְאָנֹכִ֣י אֶֽעֱנֶ֑ךָּ לְֽמַעֲשֵׂ֖ה יָדֶ֣יךָ תִכְסֹֽף

You shall call, and I will answer you: you will have a desire to the work of your hands.

כִּֽי עַ֭תָּה צְעָדַ֣י תִּסְפּ֑וֹר לֹֽא תִ֝שְׁמ֗וֹר עַל חַטָּאתִֽי

For now you numberest my steps: dost you not watch over my sin?

חָתֻ֣ם בִּצְר֣וֹר פִּשְׁעִ֑י וַ֝תִּטְפֹּ֗ל עַל עֲוֺנִֽי

My transgression sealed up in a bag, and you sewest up mine iniquity.

וְ֭אוּלָם הַר נוֹפֵ֣ל יִבּ֑וֹל וְ֝צ֗וּר יֶעְתַּ֥ק מִמְּקֹמֽוֹ

And surely the mountain falling cometh to nought, and the rock is removed out of his place.

אֲבָנִ֤ים שָׁ֥חֲקוּ מַ֗יִם תִּשְׁטֹֽף סְפִיחֶ֥יהָ עֲפַר אָ֑רֶץ וְתִקְוַ֖ת אֱנ֣וֹשׁ הֶאֱבַֽדְתָּ

The waters wear the stones: you washest away the things which grow of the dust of the earth; and you destroyest the hope of man.

תִּתְקְפֵ֣הוּ לָ֭נֶצַח וַֽיַּהֲלֹ֑ךְ מְשַׁנֶּ֥ה פָ֝נָ֗יו וַֽתְּשַׁלְּחֵֽהוּ

You prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth: you changest his countenance, and sendest him away.

יִכְבְּד֣וּ בָ֭נָיו וְלֹ֣א יֵדָ֑ע וְ֝יִצְעֲר֗וּ וְֽלֹא יָבִ֥ין לָֽמוֹ

His sons come to honour, and he knoweth not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth not of them.

אַךְ בְּ֭שָׂרוֹ עָלָ֣יו יִכְאָ֑ב וְ֝נַפְשׁ֗וֹ עָלָ֥יו תֶּאֱבָֽל

But his flesh upon him shall have pain, and his soul within him shall mourn.
