The Book of Jeremiah, Chapter 7ירמיהו 7

הַדָּבָר֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הָיָ֣ה אֶֽל יִרְמְיָ֔הוּ מֵאֵ֥ת יְהוָ֖ה לֵאמֹֽר

The word that came to Jeremiah from YHWH, saying,

עֲמֹ֗ד בְּשַׁ֨עַר֙ בֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֔ה וְקָרָ֣אתָ שָּׁ֔ם אֶת הַדָּבָ֖ר הַזֶּ֑ה וְאָמַרְתָּ֞ שִׁמְע֣וּ דְבַר יְהוָ֗ה כָּל יְהוּדָה֙ הַבָּאִים֙ בַּשְּׁעָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֔לֶּה לְהִֽשְׁתַּחֲוֺ֖ת לַיהוָֽה

Stand in the gate of YHWH's house, and proclaim there this word, and say, Hear the word of YHWH, all Judah, that enter in at these gates to worship YHWH.

כֹּֽה אָמַ֞ר יְהוָ֤ה צְבָאוֹת֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל הֵיטִ֥יבוּ דַרְכֵיכֶ֖ם וּמַֽעַלְלֵיכֶ֑ם וַאֲשַׁכְּנָ֣ה אֶתְכֶ֔ם בַּמָּק֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה

Thus says YHWH of hosts, the God of Israel, Amend your ways and your doings, and I will cause you to dwell in this place.

אַל תִּבְטְח֣וּ לָכֶ֔ם אֶל דִּבְרֵ֥י הַשֶּׁ֖קֶר לֵאמֹ֑ר הֵיכַ֤ל יְהוָה֙ הֵיכַ֣ל יְהוָ֔ה הֵיכַ֥ל יְהוָ֖ה הֵֽמָּה

Trust you not in lying words, saying, The temple of YHWH, The temple of YHWH, The temple of YHWH, these.

כִּ֤י אִם הֵיטֵיב֙ תֵּיטִ֔יבוּ אֶת דַּרְכֵיכֶ֖ם וְאֶת מַֽעַלְלֵיכֶ֑ם אִם עָשׂ֤וֹ תַֽעֲשׂוּ֙ מִשְׁפָּ֔ט בֵּ֥ין אִ֖ישׁ וּבֵ֥ין רֵעֵֽהוּ

For if you throughly amend your ways and your doings; if you throughly execute judgment between a man and his neighbour;

גֵּ֣ר יָת֤וֹם וְאַלְמָנָה֙ לֹ֣א תַֽעֲשֹׁ֔קוּ וְדָ֣ם נָקִ֔י אַֽל תִּשְׁפְּכ֖וּ בַּמָּק֣וֹם הַזֶּ֑ה וְאַחֲרֵ֨י אֱלֹהִ֧ים אֲחֵרִ֛ים לֹ֥א תֵלְכ֖וּ לְרַ֥ע לָכֶֽם

you oppress not the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and shed not innocent blood in this place, neither walk after other gods to your hurt:

וְשִׁכַּנְתִּ֤י אֶתְכֶם֙ בַּמָּק֣וֹם הַזֶּ֔ה בָּאָ֕רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֥ר נָתַ֖תִּי לַאֲבֽוֹתֵיכֶ֑ם לְמִן עוֹלָ֖ם וְעַד עוֹלָֽם

Then will I cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers, for ever and ever.

הִנֵּ֤ה אַתֶּם֙ בֹּטְחִ֣ים לָכֶ֔ם עַל דִּבְרֵ֖י הַשָּׁ֑קֶר לְבִלְתִּ֖י הוֹעִֽיל

Behold, you trust in lying words, that cannot profit.

הֲגָנֹ֤ב רָצֹ֨חַ֙ וְֽנָאֹ֔ף וְהִשָּׁבֵ֥עַ לַשֶּׁ֖קֶר וְקַטֵּ֣ר לַבָּ֑עַל וְהָלֹ֗ךְ אַחֲרֵ֛י אֱלֹהִ֥ים אֲחֵרִ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹֽא יְדַעְתֶּֽם

Will you steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense to Baal, and walk after other gods whom you know not;

וּבָאתֶ֞ם וַעֲמַדְתֶּ֣ם לְפָנַ֗י בַּבַּ֤יִת הַזֶּה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר נִקְרָא שְׁמִ֣י עָלָ֔יו וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֖ם נִצַּ֑לְנוּ לְמַ֣עַן עֲשׂ֔וֹת אֵ֥ת כָּל הַתּוֹעֵב֖וֹת הָאֵֽלֶּה

And come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, We are delivered to do all these abominations?

הַמְעָרַ֣ת פָּרִצִ֗ים הָיָ֨ה הַבַּ֧יִת הַזֶּ֛ה אֲשֶׁר נִקְרָֽא שְׁמִ֥י עָלָ֖יו בְּעֵינֵיכֶ֑ם גַּ֧ם אָנֹכִ֛י הִנֵּ֥ה רָאִ֖יתִי נְאֻם יְהוָֽה

Is this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, even I have seen , says YHWH.

כִּ֣י לְכוּ נָ֗א אֶל מְקוֹמִי֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּשִׁיל֔וֹ אֲשֶׁ֨ר שִׁכַּ֧נְתִּֽי שְׁמִ֛י שָׁ֖ם בָּרִֽאשׁוֹנָ֑ה וּרְאוּ֙ אֵ֣ת אֲשֶׁר עָשִׂ֣יתִי ל֔וֹ מִפְּנֵ֕י רָעַ֖ת עַמִּ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל

But go you now to my place which in Shiloh, where I set my name at the first, and see what I did to it for the wickedness of my people Israel.

וְעַתָּ֗ה יַ֧עַן עֲשׂוֹתְכֶ֛ם אֶת כָּל הַמַּֽעֲשִׂ֥ים הָאֵ֖לֶּה נְאֻם יְהוָ֑ה וָאֲדַבֵּ֨ר אֲלֵיכֶ֜ם הַשְׁכֵּ֤ם וְדַבֵּר֙ וְלֹ֣א שְׁמַעְתֶּ֔ם וָאֶקְרָ֥א אֶתְכֶ֖ם וְלֹ֥א עֲנִיתֶֽם

And now, because you have done all these works, says YHWH, and I spake to you, rising up early and speaking, but you heard not; and I called you, but you answered not;

וְעָשִׂ֜יתִי לַבַּ֣יִת אֲשֶׁ֧ר נִֽקְרָא שְׁמִ֣י עָלָ֗יו אֲשֶׁ֤ר אַתֶּם֙ בֹּטְחִ֣ים בּ֔וֹ וְלַ֨מָּק֔וֹם אֲשֶׁר נָתַ֥תִּי לָכֶ֖ם וְלַאֲבֽוֹתֵיכֶ֑ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשִׂ֖יתִי לְשִׁלֽוֹ

Therefore will I do to house, which is called by my name, wherein you trust, and to the place which I gave to you and to your fathers, as I have done to Shiloh.

וְהִשְׁלַכְתִּ֥י אֶתְכֶ֖ם מֵעַ֣ל פָּנָ֑י כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר הִשְׁלַ֨כְתִּי֙ אֶת כָּל אֲחֵיכֶ֔ם אֵ֖ת כָּל זֶ֥רַע אֶפְרָֽיִם

And I will cast you out of my sight, as I have cast out all your brethren, the whole seed of Ephraim.

וְאַתָּ֞ה אַל תִּתְפַּלֵּ֣ל בְּעַד הָעָ֣ם הַזֶּ֗ה וְאַל תִּשָּׂ֧א בַעֲדָ֛ם רִנָּ֥ה וּתְפִלָּ֖ה וְאַל תִּפְגַּע בִּ֑י כִּי אֵינֶ֥נִּי שֹׁמֵ֖עַ אֹתָֽךְ

Therefore pray not you for this people, neither lift up cry nor prayer for them, neither make intercession to me: for I will not hear you.

הַֽאֵינְךָ֣ רֹאֶ֔ה מָ֛ה הֵ֥מָּה עֹשִׂ֖ים בְּעָרֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֑ה וּבְחֻצ֖וֹת יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם

Seest you not what they do in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?

הַבָּנִ֞ים מְלַקְּטִ֣ים עֵצִ֗ים וְהָֽאָבוֹת֙ מְבַעֲרִ֣ים אֶת הָאֵ֔שׁ וְהַנָּשִׁ֖ים לָשׁ֣וֹת בָּצֵ֑ק לַעֲשׂ֨וֹת כַּוָּנִ֜ים לִמְלֶ֣כֶת הַשָּׁמַ֗יִם וְהַסֵּ֤ךְ נְסָכִים֙ לֵאלֹהִ֣ים אֲחֵרִ֔ים לְמַ֖עַן הַכְעִסֵֽנִי

The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings to other gods, that they may provoke me to anger.

הַאֹתִ֛י הֵ֥ם מַכְעִסִ֖ים נְאֻם יְהוָ֑ה הֲל֣וֹא אֹתָ֔ם לְמַ֖עַן בֹּ֥שֶׁת פְּנֵיהֶֽם

Do they provoke me to anger? says YHWH: not themselves to the confusion of their own faces?

לָכֵ֞ן כֹּה אָמַ֣ר אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהֹוִ֗ה הִנֵּ֨ה אַפִּ֤י וַֽחֲמָתִי֙ נִתֶּ֨כֶת֙ אֶל הַמָּק֣וֹם הַזֶּ֔ה עַל הָֽאָדָם֙ וְעַל הַבְּהֵמָ֔ה וְעַל עֵ֥ץ הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה וְעַל פְּרִ֣י הָֽאֲדָמָ֑ה וּבָעֲרָ֖ה וְלֹ֥א תִכְבֶּֽה

Therefore thus says YHWH YHWH; Behold, mine anger and my fury shall be poured out upon this place, upon man, and upon beast, and upon the trees of the field, and upon the fruit of the ground; and it shall burn, and shall not be quenched.

כֹּ֥ה אָמַ֛ר יְהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל עֹלוֹתֵיכֶ֛ם סְפ֥וּ עַל זִבְחֵיכֶ֖ם וְאִכְל֥וּ בָשָֽׂר

Thus says YHWH of hosts, the God of Israel; Put your burnt offerings to your sacrifices, and eat flesh.

כִּ֠י לֹֽא דִבַּ֤רְתִּי אֶת אֲבֽוֹתֵיכֶם֙ וְלֹ֣א צִוִּיתִ֔ים בְּי֛וֹם הוציא הוֹצִיאִ֥י אוֹתָ֖ם מֵאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם עַל דִּבְרֵ֥י עוֹלָ֖ה וָזָֽבַח

For I spake not to your fathers, nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices:

כִּ֣י אִֽם אֶת הַדָּבָ֣ר הַ֠זֶּה צִוִּ֨יתִי אוֹתָ֤ם לֵאמֹר֙ שִׁמְע֣וּ בְקוֹלִ֔י וְהָיִ֤יתִי לָכֶם֙ לֵֽאלֹהִ֔ים וְאַתֶּ֖ם תִּֽהְיוּ לִ֣י לְעָ֑ם וַהֲלַכְתֶּ֗ם בְּכָל הַדֶּ֨רֶךְ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אֲצַוֶּ֣ה אֶתְכֶ֔ם לְמַ֖עַן יִיטַ֥ב לָכֶֽם

But this thing commanded I them, saying, Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people: and walk you in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well to you.

וְלֹ֤א שָֽׁמְעוּ֙ וְלֹֽא הִטּ֣וּ אֶת אָזְנָ֔ם וַיֵּֽלְכוּ֙ בְּמֹ֣עֵצ֔וֹת בִּשְׁרִר֖וּת לִבָּ֣ם הָרָ֑ע וַיִּהְי֥וּ לְאָח֖וֹר וְלֹ֥א לְפָנִֽים

But they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear, but walked in the counsels in the imagination of their evil heart, and went backward, and not forward.

לְמִן הַיּ֗וֹם אֲשֶׁ֨ר יָצְא֤וּ אֲבֽוֹתֵיכֶם֙ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם עַ֖ד הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֑ה וָאֶשְׁלַ֤ח אֲלֵיכֶם֙ אֶת כָּל עֲבָדַ֣י הַנְּבִיאִ֔ים י֖וֹם הַשְׁכֵּ֥ם וְשָׁלֹֽחַ

Since the day that your fathers came forth out of the land of Egypt to this day I have even sent to you all my servants the prophets, daily rising up early and sending :

וְל֤וֹא שָׁמְעוּ֙ אֵלַ֔י וְלֹ֥א הִטּ֖וּ אֶת אָזְנָ֑ם וַיַּקְשׁוּ֙ אֶת עָרְפָּ֔ם הֵרֵ֖עוּ מֵאֲבוֹתָֽם

Yet they hearkened not to me, nor inclined their ear, but hardened their neck: they did worse than their fathers.

וְדִבַּרְתָּ֤ אֲלֵיהֶם֙ אֶת כָּל הַדְּבָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֔לֶּה וְלֹ֥א יִשְׁמְע֖וּ אֵלֶ֑יךָ וְקָרָ֥אתָ אֲלֵיהֶ֖ם וְלֹ֥א יַעֲנֽוּכָה

Therefore you shall speak all these words to them; but they will not hearken to you: you shall also call to them; but they will not answer you.

וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֲלֵיהֶ֗ם זֶ֤ה הַגּוֹי֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לֽוֹא שָׁמְע֗וּ בְּקוֹל֙ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהָ֔יו וְלֹ֥א לָקְח֖וּ מוּסָ֑ר אָֽבְדָה֙ הָֽאֱמוּנָ֔ה וְנִכְרְתָ֖ה מִפִּיהֶֽם

But you shall say to them, This a nation that obeyeth not the voice of YHWH their God, nor receiveth correction: truth is perished, and is cut off from their mouth.

גָּזִּ֤י נִזְרֵךְ֙ וְֽהַשְׁלִ֔יכִי וּשְׂאִ֥י עַל שְׁפָיִ֖ם קִינָ֑ה כִּ֚י מָאַ֣ס יְהוָ֔ה וַיִּטֹּ֖שׁ אֶת דּ֥וֹר עֶבְרָתֽוֹ

Cut off your hair, , and cast away, and take up a lamentation on high places; for YHWH has rejected and forsaken the generation of his wrath.

כִּֽי עָשׂ֨וּ בְנֵי יְהוּדָ֥ה הָרַ֛ע בְּעֵינַ֖י נְאֻום יְהוָ֑ה שָׂ֣מוּ שִׁקּֽוּצֵיהֶ֗ם בַּבַּ֛יִת אֲשֶׁר נִקְרָא שְׁמִ֥י עָלָ֖יו לְטַמְּאֽוֹ

For the children of Judah have done evil in my sight, says YHWH: they have set their abominations in the house which is called by my name, to pollute it.

וּבָנ֞וּ בָּמ֣וֹת הַתֹּ֗פֶת אֲשֶׁר֙ בְּגֵ֣יא בֶן הִנֹּ֔ם לִשְׂרֹ֛ף אֶת בְּנֵיהֶ֥ם וְאֶת בְּנֹתֵיהֶ֖ם בָּאֵ֑שׁ אֲשֶׁר֙ לֹ֣א צִוִּ֔יתִי וְלֹ֥א עָלְתָ֖ה עַל לִבִּֽי

And they have built the high places of Tophet, which in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire; which I commanded not, neither came it into my heart.

לָכֵ֞ן הִנֵּֽה יָמִ֤ים בָּאִים֙ נְאֻם יְהוָ֔ה וְלֹא יֵאָמֵ֨ר ע֤וֹד הַתֹּ֨פֶת֙ וְגֵ֣יא בֶן הִנֹּ֔ם כִּ֖י אִם גֵּ֣יא הַהֲרֵגָ֑ה וְקָבְר֥וּ בְתֹ֖פֶת מֵאֵ֥ין מָקֽוֹם

Therefore, behold, the days come, says YHWH, that it shall no more be called Tophet, nor the valley of the son of Hinnom, but the valley of slaughter: for they shall bury in Tophet, till there be no place.

וְֽהָ֨יְתָ֜ה נִבְלַ֨ת הָעָ֤ם הַזֶּה֙ לְמַֽאֲכָ֔ל לְע֥וֹף הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם וּלְבֶהֱמַ֣ת הָאָ֑רֶץ וְאֵ֖ין מַחֲרִֽיד

And the carcases of this people shall be meat for the fowls of the heaven, and for the beasts of the earth; and none shall fray away.

וְהִשְׁבַּתִּ֣י מֵעָרֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֗ה וּמֵֽחֻצוֹת֙ יְר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם ק֤וֹל שָׂשׂוֹן֙ וְק֣וֹל שִׂמְחָ֔ה ק֥וֹל חָתָ֖ן וְק֣וֹל כַּלָּ֑ה כִּ֥י לְחָרְבָּ֖ה תִּהְיֶ֥ה הָאָֽרֶץ

Then will I cause to cease from the cities of Judah, and from the streets of Jerusalem, the voice of mirth, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride: for the land shall be desolate.
