The Book of Jeremiah, Chapter 48ירמיהו 48

לְמוֹאָ֡ב כֹּֽה אָמַר֩ יְהוָ֨ה צְבָא֜וֹת אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל ה֤וֹי אֶל נְבוֹ֙ כִּ֣י שֻׁדָּ֔דָה הֹבִ֥ישָׁה נִלְכְּדָ֖ה קִרְיָתָ֑יִם הֹבִ֥ישָׁה הַמִּשְׂגָּ֖ב וָחָֽתָּה

Against Moab thus says YHWH of hosts, the God of Israel; Woe to Nebo! for it is spoiled: Kiriathaim is confounded taken: Misgab is confounded and dismayed.

אֵ֣ין עוֹד֮ תְּהִלַּ֣ת מוֹאָב֒ בְּחֶשְׁבּ֗וֹן חָשְׁב֤וּ עָלֶ֨יהָ֙ רָעָ֔ה לְכ֖וּ וְנַכְרִיתֶ֣נָּה מִגּ֑וֹי גַּם מַדְמֵ֣ן תִּדֹּ֔מִּי אַחֲרַ֖יִךְ תֵּ֥לֶךְ חָֽרֶב

no more praise of Moab: in Heshbon they have devised evil against it; come, and let us cut it off from a nation. Also you shall be cut down, O Madmen; the sword shall pursue you.

ק֥וֹל צְעָקָ֖ה מֵחֹֽרוֹנָ֑יִם שֹׁ֖ד וָשֶׁ֥בֶר גָּדֽוֹל

A voice of crying from Horonaim, spoiling and great destruction.

נִשְׁבְּרָ֖ה מוֹאָ֑ב הִשְׁמִ֥יעוּ זְּעָקָ֖ה צעוריה צְעִירֶֽיהָ

Moab is destroyed; her little ones have caused a cry to be heard.

כִּ֚י מַעֲלֵ֣ה הלחות הַלּוּחִ֔ית בִּבְכִ֖י יַֽעֲלֶה בֶּ֑כִי כִּ֚י בְּמוֹרַ֣ד חוֹרֹנַ֔יִם צָרֵ֥י צַֽעֲקַת שֶׁ֖בֶר שָׁמֵֽעוּ

For in the going up of Luhith continual weeping shall go up; for in the going down of Horonaim the enemies have heard a cry of destruction.

נֻ֖סוּ מַלְּט֣וּ נַפְשְׁכֶ֑ם וְתִֽהְיֶ֕ינָה כַּעֲרוֹעֵ֖ר בַּמִּדְבָּֽר

Flee, save your lives, and be like the heath in the wilderness.

כִּ֠י יַ֣עַן בִּטְחֵ֤ךְ בְּמַעֲשַׂ֨יִךְ֙ וּבְא֣וֹצְרוֹתַ֔יִךְ גַּם אַ֖תְּ תִּלָּכֵ֑דִי וְיָצָ֤א כמיש כְמוֹשׁ֙ בַּגּוֹלָ֔ה כֹּהֲנָ֥יו וְשָׂרָ֖יו יחד יַחְדָּֽיו

For because you have trusted in your works and in your treasures, you shall also be taken: and Chemosh shall go forth into captivity his priests and his princes together.

וְיָבֹ֨א שֹׁדֵ֜ד אֶל כָּל עִ֗יר וְעִיר֙ לֹ֣א תִמָּלֵ֔ט וְאָבַ֥ד הָעֵ֖מֶק וְנִשְׁמַ֣ד הַמִּישֹׁ֑ר אֲשֶׁ֖ר אָמַ֥ר יְהוָֽה

And the spoiler shall come upon every city, and no city shall escape: the valley also shall perish, and the plain shall be destroyed, as YHWH has spoken.

תְּנוּ צִ֣יץ לְמוֹאָ֔ב כִּ֥י נָצֹ֖א תֵּצֵ֑א וְעָרֶ֨יהָ֙ לְשַׁמָּ֣ה תִֽהְיֶ֔ינָה מֵאֵ֥ין יוֹשֵׁ֖ב בָּהֵֽן

Give wings to Moab, that it may flee and get away: for the cities thereof shall be desolate, without any to dwell therein.

אָר֗וּר עֹשֶׂ֛ה מְלֶ֥אכֶת יְהוָ֖ה רְמִיָּ֑ה וְאָר֕וּר מֹנֵ֥עַ חַרְבּ֖וֹ מִדָּֽם

Cursed he that doeth the work of YHWH deceitfully, and cursed he that keepeth back his sword from blood.

שַׁאֲנַ֨ן מוֹאָ֜ב מִנְּעוּרָ֗יו וְשֹׁקֵ֥ט הוּא֙ אֶל שְׁמָרָ֔יו וְלֹֽא הוּרַ֤ק מִכְּלִי֙ אֶל כֶּ֔לִי וּבַגּוֹלָ֖ה לֹ֣א הָלָ֑ךְ עַל כֵּ֗ן עָמַ֤ד טַעְמוֹ֙ בּ֔וֹ וְרֵיח֖וֹ לֹ֥א נָמָֽר

Moab has been at ease from his youth, and he has settled on his lees, and has not been emptied from vessel to vessel, neither has he gone into captivity: therefore his taste remained in him, and his scent is not changed.

לָכֵ֞ן הִנֵּ֖ה יָמִ֤ים בָּאִים֙ נְאֻם יְהוָ֔ה וְשִׁלַּחְתִּי ל֥וֹ צֹעִ֖ים וְצֵעֻ֑הוּ וְכֵלָ֣יו יָרִ֔יקוּ וְנִבְלֵיהֶ֖ם יְנַפֵּֽצוּ

Therefore, behold, the days come, says YHWH, that I will send to him wanderers, that shall cause him to wander, and shall empty his vessels, and break their bottles.

וּבֹ֥שׁ מוֹאָ֖ב מִכְּמ֑וֹשׁ כַּאֲשֶׁר בֹּ֨שׁוּ֙ בֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל מִבֵּ֥ית אֵ֖ל מִבְטֶחָֽם

And Moab shall be ashamed of Chemosh, as the house of Israel was ashamed of Bethel their confidence.

אֵ֚יךְ תֹּֽאמְר֔וּ גִּבּוֹרִ֖ים אֲנָ֑חְנוּ וְאַנְשֵׁי חַ֖יִל לַמִּלְחָמָֽה

How say you, We mighty and strong men for the war?

שֻׁדַּ֤ד מוֹאָב֙ וְעָרֶ֣יהָ עָלָ֔ה וּמִבְחַ֥ר בַּֽחוּרָ֖יו יָרְד֣וּ לַטָּ֑בַח נְאֻ֨ם הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ יְהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת שְׁמֽוֹ

Moab is spoiled, and gone up her cities, and his chosen young men are gone down to the slaughter, says the King, whose name YHWH of hosts.

קָר֥וֹב אֵיד מוֹאָ֖ב לָב֑וֹא וְרָ֣עָת֔וֹ מִהֲרָ֖ה מְאֹֽד

The calamity of Moab near to come, and his affliction hasteth fast.

נֻ֤דוּ לוֹ֙ כָּל סְבִיבָ֔יו וְכֹ֖ל יֹדְעֵ֣י שְׁמ֑וֹ אִמְר֗וּ אֵיכָ֤ה נִשְׁבַּר֙ מַטֵּה עֹ֔ז מַקֵּ֖ל תִּפְאָרָֽה

All you that are about him, bemoan him; and all you that know his name, say, How is the strong staff broken, the beautiful rod!

רְדִ֤י מִכָּבוֹד֙ ישבי וּשְׁבִ֣י בַצָּמָ֔א יֹשֶׁ֖בֶת בַּת דִּיב֑וֹן כִּֽי שֹׁדֵ֤ד מוֹאָב֙ עָ֣לָה בָ֔ךְ שִׁחֵ֖ת מִבְצָרָֽיִךְ

You daughter that dost inhabit Dibon, come down from glory, and sit in thirst; for the spoiler of Moab shall come upon you, he shall destroy your strong holds.

אֶל דֶּ֛רֶךְ עִמְדִ֥י וְצַפִּ֖י יוֹשֶׁ֣בֶת עֲרוֹעֵ֑ר שַׁאֲלִי נָ֣ס וְנִמְלָ֔טָה אִמְרִ֖י מַה נִּֽהְיָֽתָה

O inhabitant of Aroer, stand by the way, and espy; ask him that fleeth, and her that escapeth, say, What is done?

הֹבִ֥ישׁ מוֹאָ֛ב כִּֽי חַ֖תָּה הילילי הֵילִ֣ילוּ וזעקי וּֽזְעָ֑קוּ הַגִּ֣ידוּ בְאַרְנ֔וֹן כִּ֥י שֻׁדַּ֖ד מוֹאָֽב

Moab is confounded; for it is broken down: howl and cry; tell you it in Arnon, that Moab is spoiled,

וּמִשְׁפָּ֥ט בָּ֖א אֶל אֶ֣רֶץ הַמִּישֹׁ֑ר אֶל חֹל֥וֹן וְאֶל יַ֖הְצָה וְעַל מופעת מֵיפָֽעַת

And judgment is come upon the plain country; upon Holon, and upon Jahazah, and upon Mephaath,

וְעַל דִּיב֣וֹן וְעַל נְב֔וֹ וְעַל בֵּ֖ית דִּבְלָתָֽיִם

And upon Dibon, and upon Nebo, and upon Bethdiblathaim,

וְעַ֧ל קִרְיָתַ֛יִם וְעַל בֵּ֥ית גָּמ֖וּל וְעַל בֵּ֥ית מְעֽוֹן

And upon Kiriathaim, and upon Bethgamul, and upon Bethmeon,

וְעַל קְרִיּ֖וֹת וְעַל בָּצְרָ֑ה וְעַ֗ל כָּל עָרֵי֙ אֶ֣רֶץ מוֹאָ֔ב הָרְחֹק֖וֹת וְהַקְּרֹבֽוֹת

And upon Kerioth, and upon Bozrah, and upon all the cities of the land of Moab, far or near.

נִגְדְּעָה֙ קֶ֣רֶן מוֹאָ֔ב וּזְרֹע֖וֹ נִשְׁבָּ֑רָה נְאֻ֖ם יְהוָֽה

The horn of Moab is cut off, and his arm is broken, says YHWH.

הַשְׁכִּירֻ֕הוּ כִּ֥י עַל יְהוָ֖ה הִגְדִּ֑יל וְסָפַ֤ק מוֹאָב֙ בְּקִיא֔וֹ וְהָיָ֥ה לִשְׂחֹ֖ק גַּם הֽוּא

Make you him drunken: for he magnified against YHWH: Moab also shall wallow in his vomit, and he also shall be in derision.

וְאִ֣ם ל֣וֹא הַשְּׂחֹ֗ק הָיָ֤ה לְךָ֙ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אִם בְּגַנָּבִ֖ים נמצאה נִמְצָ֑א כִּֽי מִדֵּ֧י דְבָרֶ֥יךָ בּ֖וֹ תִּתְנוֹדָֽד

For was not Israel a derision to you? was he found among thieves? for since you spakest of him, you skippedst for joy.

עִזְב֤וּ עָרִים֙ וְשִׁכְנ֣וּ בַּסֶּ֔לַע יֹשְׁבֵ֖י מוֹאָ֑ב וִֽהְי֣וּ כְיוֹנָ֔ה תְּקַנֵּ֖ן בְּעֶבְרֵ֥י פִי פָֽחַת

O you that dwell in Moab, leave the cities, and dwell in the rock, and be like the dove maketh her nest in the sides of the hole's mouth.

שָׁמַ֥עְנוּ גְאוֹן מוֹאָ֖ב גֵּאֶ֣ה מְאֹ֑ד גָּבְה֧וֹ וּגְאוֹנ֛וֹ וְגַאֲוָת֖וֹ וְרֻ֥ם לִבּֽוֹ

We have heard the pride of Moab, (he is exceeding proud) his loftiness, and his arrogancy, and his pride, and the haughtiness of his heart.

אֲנִ֤י יָדַ֨עְתִּי֙ נְאֻם יְהוָ֔ה עֶבְרָת֖וֹ וְלֹא כֵ֑ן בַּדָּ֖יו לֹא כֵ֥ן עָשֽׂוּ

I know his wrath, says YHWH; but not so; his lies shall not so effect .

עַל כֵּן֙ עַל מוֹאָ֣ב אֲיֵלִ֔יל וּלְמוֹאָ֥ב כֻּלֹּ֖ה אֶזְעָ֑ק אֶל אַנְשֵׁ֥י קִֽיר חֶ֖רֶשׂ יֶהְגֶּֽה

Therefore will I howl for Moab, and I will cry out for all Moab; shall mourn for the men of Kirheres.

מִבְּכִ֨י יַעְזֵ֤ר אֶבְכֶּה לָּךְ֙ הַגֶּ֣פֶן שִׂבְמָ֔ה נְטִֽישֹׁתַ֨יִךְ֙ עָ֣בְרוּ יָ֔ם עַ֛ד יָ֥ם יַעְזֵ֖ר נָגָ֑עוּ עַל קֵיצֵ֥ךְ וְעַל בְּצִירֵ֖ךְ שֹׁדֵ֥ד נָפָֽל

O vine of Sibmah, I will weep for you with the weeping of Jazer: your plants are gone over the sea, they reach to the sea of Jazer: the spoiler is fallen upon your summer fruits and upon your vintage.

וְנֶאֶסְפָ֨ה שִׂמְחָ֥ה וָגִ֛יל מִכַּרְמֶ֖ל וּמֵאֶ֣רֶץ מוֹאָ֑ב וְיַ֨יִן֙ מִיקָבִ֣ים הִשְׁבַּ֔תִּי לֹֽא יִדְרֹ֣ךְ הֵידָ֔ד הֵידָ֖ד לֹ֥א הֵידָֽד

And joy and gladness is taken from the plentiful field, and from the land of Moab; and I have caused wine to fail from the winepresses: none shall tread with shouting; shouting no shouting.

מִזַּעֲקַ֨ת חֶשְׁבּ֜וֹן עַד אֶלְעָלֵ֗ה עַד יַ֨הַץ֙ נָתְנ֣וּ קוֹלָ֔ם מִצֹּ֨עַר֙ עַד חֹ֣רֹנַ֔יִם עֶגְלַ֖ת שְׁלִֽשִׁיָּ֑ה כִּ֚י גַּם מֵ֣י נִמְרִ֔ים לִמְשַׁמּ֖וֹת יִהְיֽוּ

From the cry of Heshbon to Elealeh, to Jahaz, have they uttered their voice, from Zoar to Horonaim, an heifer of three years old: for the waters also of Nimrim shall be desolate.

וְהִשְׁבַּתִּ֥י לְמוֹאָ֖ב נְאֻם יְהוָ֑ה מַעֲלֶ֣ה בָמָ֔ה וּמַקְטִ֖יר לֵאלֹהָֽיו

Moreover I will cause to cease in Moab, says YHWH, him that offereth in the high places, and him that burneth incense to his gods.

עַל כֵּ֞ן לִבִּ֤י לְמוֹאָב֙ כַּחֲלִלִ֣ים יֶהֱמֶ֔ה וְלִבִּי֙ אֶל אַנְשֵׁ֣י קִֽיר חֶ֔רֶשׂ כַּחֲלִילִ֖ים יֶהֱמֶ֑ה עַל כֵּ֛ן יִתְרַ֥ת עָשָׂ֖ה אָבָֽדוּ

Therefore mine heart shall sound for Moab like pipes, and mine heart shall sound like pipes for the men of Kirheres: because the riches he has gotten are perished.

כִּ֤י כָל רֹאשׁ֙ קָרְחָ֔ה וְכָל זָקָ֖ן גְּרֻעָ֑ה עַ֤ל כָּל יָדַ֨יִם֙ גְּדֻדֹ֔ת וְעַל מָתְנַ֖יִם שָֽׂק

For every head bald, and every beard clipped: upon all the hands cuttings, and upon the loins sackcloth.

עַ֣ל כָּל גַּגּ֥וֹת מוֹאָ֛ב וּבִרְחֹבֹתֶ֖יהָ כֻּלֹּ֣ה מִסְפֵּ֑ד כִּֽי שָׁבַ֣רְתִּי אֶת מוֹאָ֗ב כִּכְלִ֛י אֵֽין חֵ֥פֶץ בּ֖וֹ נְאֻם יְהוָֽה

lamentation generally upon all the housetops of Moab, and in the streets thereof: for I have broken Moab like a vessel wherein no pleasure, says YHWH.

אֵ֥יךְ חַ֨תָּה֙ הֵילִ֔ילוּ אֵ֛יךְ הִפְנָה עֹ֥רֶף מוֹאָ֖ב בּ֑וֹשׁ וְהָיָ֥ה מוֹאָ֛ב לִשְׂחֹ֥ק וְלִמְחִתָּ֖ה לְכָל סְבִיבָֽיו

They shall howl, , How is it broken down! how has Moab turned the back with shame! so shall Moab be a derision and a dismaying to all them about him.

כִּי כֹה֙ אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה הִנֵּ֥ה כַנֶּ֖שֶׁר יִדְאֶ֑ה וּפָרַ֥שׂ כְּנָפָ֖יו אֶל מוֹאָֽב

For thus says YHWH; Behold, he shall fly as an eagle, and shall spread his wings over Moab.

נִלְכְּדָה֙ הַקְּרִיּ֔וֹת וְהַמְּצָד֖וֹת נִתְפָּ֑שָׂה וְֽ֠הָיָה לֵ֞ב גִּבּוֹרֵ֤י מוֹאָב֙ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֔וּא כְּלֵ֖ב אִשָּׁ֥ה מְצֵרָֽה

Kerioth is taken, and the strong holds are surprised, and the mighty men's hearts in Moab at that day shall be as the heart of a woman in her pangs.

וְנִשְׁמַ֥ד מוֹאָ֖ב מֵעָ֑ם כִּ֥י עַל יְהוָ֖ה הִגְדִּֽיל

And Moab shall be destroyed from a people, because he has magnified against YHWH.

פַּ֥חַד וָפַ֖חַת וָפָ֑ח עָלֶ֛יךָ יוֹשֵׁ֥ב מוֹאָ֖ב נְאֻם יְהוָֽה

Fear, and the pit, and the snare, upon you, O inhabitant of Moab, says YHWH.

הניס הַנָּ֞ס מִפְּנֵ֤י הַפַּ֨חַד֙ יִפֹּ֣ל אֶל הַפַּ֔חַת וְהָֽעֹלֶה֙ מִן הַפַּ֔חַת יִלָּכֵ֖ד בַּפָּ֑ח כִּֽי אָבִ֨יא אֵלֶ֧יהָ אֶל מוֹאָ֛ב שְׁנַ֥ת פְּקֻדָּתָ֖ם נְאֻם יְהוָֽה

He that fleeth from the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that getteth up out of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for I will bring upon it, upon Moab, the year of their visitation, says YHWH.

בְּצֵ֥ל חֶשְׁבּ֛וֹן עָמְד֖וּ מִכֹּ֣חַ נָסִ֑ים כִּֽי אֵ֞שׁ יָצָ֣א מֵחֶשְׁבּ֗וֹן וְלֶֽהָבָה֙ מִבֵּ֣ין סִיח֔וֹן וַתֹּ֨אכַל֙ פְּאַ֣ת מוֹאָ֔ב וְקָדְקֹ֖ד בְּנֵ֥י שָׁאֽוֹן

They that fled stood under the shadow of Heshbon because of the force: but a fire shall come forth out of Heshbon, and a flame from the midst of Sihon, and shall devour the corner of Moab, and the crown of the head of the tumultuous ones.

אוֹי לְךָ֣ מוֹאָ֔ב אָבַ֖ד עַם כְּמ֑וֹשׁ כִּֽי לֻקְּח֤וּ בָנֶ֨יךָ֙ בַּשֶּׁ֔בִי וּבְנֹתֶ֖יךָ בַּשִּׁבְיָֽה

Woe be to you, O Moab! the people of Chemosh perisheth: for your sons are taken captives, and your daughters captives.

וְשַׁבְתִּ֧י שְׁבוּת מוֹאָ֛ב בְּאַחֲרִ֥ית הַיָּמִ֖ים נְאֻם יְהוָ֑ה עַד הֵ֖נָּה מִשְׁפַּ֥ט מוֹאָֽב

Yet will I bring again the captivity of Moab in the latter days, says YHWH. Thus far the judgment of Moab.
