The Book of Jeremiah, Chapter 42ירמיהו 42

וַֽיִּגְּשׁוּ֙ כָּל שָׂרֵ֣י הַחֲיָלִ֔ים וְיֽוֹחָנָן֙ בֶּן קָרֵ֔חַ וִֽיזַנְיָ֖ה בֶּן הוֹשַֽׁעְיָ֑ה וְכָל הָעָ֖ם מִקָּטֹ֥ן וְעַד גָּדֽוֹל

Then all the captains of the forces, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and Jezaniah the son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from the least even to the greatest, came near,

וַיֹּאמְר֞וּ אֶֽל יִרְמְיָ֣הוּ הַנָּבִ֗יא תִּפָּל נָ֤א תְחִנָּתֵ֨נוּ֙ לְפָנֶ֔יךָ וְהִתְפַּלֵּ֤ל בַּעֲדֵ֨נוּ֙ אֶל יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ בְּעַ֖ד כָּל הַשְּׁאֵרִ֣ית הַזֹּ֑את כִּֽי נִשְׁאַ֤רְנוּ מְעַט֙ מֵֽהַרְבֵּ֔ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר עֵינֶ֖יךָ רֹא֥וֹת אֹתָֽנוּ

And said to Jeremiah the prophet, Let, we beseech you, our supplication be accepted before you, and pray for us to YHWH your God, for all this remnant; (for we are left a few of many, as your eyes do behold us:)

וְיַגֶּד לָ֨נוּ֙ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ אֶת הַדֶּ֖רֶךְ אֲשֶׁ֣ר נֵֽלֶךְ בָּ֑הּ וְאֶת הַדָּבָ֖ר אֲשֶׁ֥ר נַעֲשֶֽׂה

That YHWH your God may shew us the way wherein we may walk, and the thing that we may do.

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶ֜ם יִרְמְיָ֤הוּ הַנָּבִיא֙ שָׁמַ֔עְתִּי הִנְנִ֧י מִתְפַּלֵּ֛ל אֶל יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֖ם כְּדִבְרֵיכֶ֑ם וְֽהָיָ֡ה כָּֽל הַדָּבָר֩ אֲשֶׁר יַעֲנֶ֨ה יְהוָ֤ה אֶתְכֶם֙ אַגִּ֣יד לָכֶ֔ם לֹֽא אֶמְנַ֥ע מִכֶּ֖ם דָּבָֽר

Then Jeremiah the prophet said to them, I have heard ; behold, I will pray to YHWH your God according to your words; and it shall come to pass, whatsoever thing YHWH shall answer you, I will declare to you; I will keep nothing back from you.

וְהֵ֨מָּה֙ אָמְר֣וּ אֶֽל יִרְמְיָ֔הוּ יְהִ֤י יְהוָה֙ בָּ֔נוּ לְעֵ֖ד אֱמֶ֣ת וְנֶאֱמָ֑ן אִם לֹ֡א כְּֽכָל הַ֠דָּבָר אֲשֶׁ֨ר יִֽשְׁלָחֲךָ֜ יְהוָ֧ה אֱלֹהֶ֛יךָ אֵלֵ֖ינוּ כֵּ֥ן נַעֲשֶֽׂה

Then they said to Jeremiah, YHWH be a true and faithful witness between us, if we do not even according to all things for the which YHWH your God shall send you to us.

אִם ט֣וֹב וְאִם רָ֔ע בְּק֣וֹל יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֗ינוּ אֲשֶׁ֨ר אנו אֲנַ֜חְנוּ שֹׁלְחִ֥ים אֹתְךָ֛ אֵלָ֖יו נִשְׁמָ֑ע לְמַ֨עַן֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר יִֽיטַב לָ֔נוּ כִּ֣י נִשְׁמַ֔ע בְּק֖וֹל יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ

Whether good, or whether evil, we will obey the voice of YHWH our God, to whom we send you; that it may be well with us, when we obey the voice of YHWH our God.

וַיְהִ֕י מִקֵּ֖ץ עֲשֶׂ֣רֶת יָמִ֑ים וַיְהִ֥י דְבַר יְהוָ֖ה אֶֽל יִרְמְיָֽהוּ

And it came to pass after ten days, that the word of YHWH came to Jeremiah.

וַיִּקְרָ֗א אֶל יֽוֹחָנָן֙ בֶּן קָרֵ֔חַ וְאֶ֛ל כָּל שָׂרֵ֥י הַחֲיָלִ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֣ר אִתּ֑וֹ וּלְכָ֨ל הָעָ֔ם לְמִקָּטֹ֥ן וְעַד גָּדֽוֹל

Then called he Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces which with him, and all the people from the least even to the greatest,

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם כֹּֽה אָמַ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל אֲשֶׁ֨ר שְׁלַחְתֶּ֤ם אֹתִי֙ אֵלָ֔יו לְהַפִּ֥יל תְּחִנַּתְכֶ֖ם לְפָנָֽיו

And said to them, Thus says YHWH, the God of Israel, to whom you sent me to present your supplication before him;

אִם שׁ֤וֹב תֵּֽשְׁבוּ֙ בָּאָ֣רֶץ הַזֹּ֔את וּבָנִ֤יתִי אֶתְכֶם֙ וְלֹ֣א אֶהֱרֹ֔ס וְנָטַעְתִּ֥י אֶתְכֶ֖ם וְלֹ֣א אֶתּ֑וֹשׁ כִּ֤י נִחַ֨מְתִּי֙ אֶל הָ֣רָעָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשִׂ֖יתִי לָכֶֽם

If you will still abide in this land, then will I build you, and not pull down, and I will plant you, and not pluck up: for I repent me of the evil that I have done to you.

אַל תִּֽירְא֗וּ מִפְּנֵי֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ בָּבֶ֔ל אֲשֶׁר אַתֶּ֥ם יְרֵאִ֖ים מִפָּנָ֑יו אַל תִּֽירְא֤וּ מִמֶּ֨נּוּ֙ נְאֻם יְהוָ֔ה כִּֽי אִתְּכֶ֣ם אָ֔נִי לְהוֹשִׁ֧יעַ אֶתְכֶ֛ם וּלְהַצִּ֥יל אֶתְכֶ֖ם מִיָּדֽוֹ

Be not afraid of the king of Babylon, of whom you are afraid; be not afraid of him, says YHWH: for I with you to save you, and to deliver you from his hand.

וְאֶתֵּ֥ן לָכֶ֛ם רַחֲמִ֖ים וְרִחַ֣ם אֶתְכֶ֑ם וְהֵשִׁ֥יב אֶתְכֶ֖ם אֶל אַדְמַתְכֶֽם

And I will shew mercies to you, that he may have mercy upon you, and cause you to return to your own land.

וְאִם אֹמְרִ֣ים אַתֶּ֔ם לֹ֥א נֵשֵׁ֖ב בָּאָ֣רֶץ הַזֹּ֑את לְבִלְתִּ֣י שְׁמֹ֔עַ בְּק֖וֹל יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם

But if you say, We will not dwell in this land, neither obey the voice of YHWH your God,

לֵאמֹ֗ר לֹ֚א כִּ֣י אֶ֤רֶץ מִצְרַ֨יִם֙ נָב֔וֹא אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹֽא נִרְאֶה֙ מִלְחָמָ֔ה וְק֥וֹל שׁוֹפָ֖ר לֹ֣א נִשְׁמָ֑ע וְלַלֶּ֥חֶם לֹֽא נִרְעָ֖ב וְשָׁ֥ם נֵשֵֽׁב

Saying, No; but we will go into the land of Egypt, where we shall see no war, nor hear the sound of the trumpet, nor have hunger of bread; and there will we dwell:

וְעַתָּ֕ה לָכֵ֛ן שִׁמְע֥וּ דְבַר יְהוָ֖ה שְׁאֵרִ֣ית יְהוּדָ֑ה כֹּֽה אָמַר֩ יְהוָ֨ה צְבָא֜וֹת אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל אִם אַ֠תֶּם שׂ֣וֹם תְּשִׂמ֤וּן פְּנֵיכֶם֙ לָבֹ֣א מִצְרַ֔יִם וּבָאתֶ֖ם לָג֥וּר שָֽׁם

And now therefore hear the word of YHWH, you remnant of Judah; Thus says YHWH of hosts, the God of Israel; If you wholly set your faces to enter into Egypt, and go to sojourn there;

וְהָיְתָ֣ה הַחֶ֗רֶב אֲשֶׁ֤ר אַתֶּם֙ יְרֵאִ֣ים מִמֶּ֔נָּה שָׁ֛ם תַּשִּׂ֥יג אֶתְכֶ֖ם בְּאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם וְהָרָעָ֞ב אֲשֶׁר אַתֶּ֣ם דֹּאֲגִ֣ים מִמֶּ֗נּוּ שָׁ֣ם יִדְבַּ֧ק אַחֲרֵיכֶ֛ם מִצְרַ֖יִם וְשָׁ֥ם תָּמֻֽתוּ

Then it shall come to pass, the sword, which you feared, shall overtake you there in the land of Egypt, and the famine, whereof you were afraid, shall follow close after you there in Egypt; and there you shall die.

וְיִֽהְי֣וּ כָל הָאֲנָשִׁ֗ים אֲשֶׁר שָׂ֨מוּ אֶת פְּנֵיהֶ֜ם לָב֤וֹא מִצְרַ֨יִם֙ לָג֣וּר שָׁ֔ם יָמ֕וּתוּ בַּחֶ֖רֶב בָּרָעָ֣ב וּבַדָּ֑בֶר וְלֹֽא יִהְיֶ֤ה לָהֶם֙ שָׂרִ֣יד וּפָלִ֔יט מִפְּנֵי֙ הָֽרָעָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר אֲנִ֖י מֵבִ֥יא עֲלֵיהֶֽם

So shall it be with all the men that set their faces to go into Egypt to sojourn there; they shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence: and none of them shall remain or escape from the evil that I will bring upon them.

כִּי֩ כֹ֨ה אָמַ֜ר יְהוָ֣ה צְבָאוֹת֮ אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ כַּאֲשֶׁר֩ נִתַּ֨ךְ אַפִּ֜י וַחֲמָתִ֗י עַל יֹֽשְׁבֵי֙ יְר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם כֵּ֣ן תִּתַּ֤ךְ חֲמָתִי֙ עֲלֵיכֶ֔ם בְּבֹאֲכֶ֖ם מִצְרָ֑יִם וִהְיִיתֶ֞ם לְאָלָ֤ה וּלְשַׁמָּה֙ וְלִקְלָלָ֣ה וּלְחֶרְפָּ֔ה וְלֹֽא תִרְא֣וּ ע֔וֹד אֶת הַמָּק֖וֹם הַזֶּֽה

For thus says YHWH of hosts, the God of Israel; As mine anger and my fury has been poured forth upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem; so shall my fury be poured forth upon you, when you shall enter into Egypt: and you shall be an execration, and an astonishment, and a curse, and a reproach; and you shall see this place no more.

דִּבֶּ֨ר יְהוָ֤ה עֲלֵיכֶם֙ שְׁאֵרִ֣ית יְהוּדָ֔ה אַל תָּבֹ֖אוּ מִצְרָ֑יִם יָדֹ֨עַ֙ תֵּֽדְע֔וּ כִּי הַעִידֹ֥תִי בָכֶ֖ם הַיּֽוֹם

YHWH has said concerning you, O you remnant of Judah; Go you not into Egypt: know certainly that I have admonished you this day.

כִּ֣י התעתים הִתְעֵיתֶם֮ בְּנַפְשֽׁוֹתֵיכֶם֒ כִּֽי אַתֶּ֞ם שְׁלַחְתֶּ֣ם אֹתִ֗י אֶל יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶם֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר הִתְפַּלֵּ֣ל בַּעֲדֵ֔נוּ אֶל יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ וּכְכֹל֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר יֹאמַ֜ר יְהוָ֧ה אֱלֹהֵ֛ינוּ כֵּ֥ן הַגֶּד לָ֖נוּ וְעָשִֽׂינוּ

For you dissembled in your hearts, when you sent me to YHWH your God, saying, Pray for us to YHWH our God; and according to all that YHWH our God shall say, so declare to us, and we will do .

וָאַגִּ֥ד לָכֶ֖ם הַיּ֑וֹם וְלֹ֣א שְׁמַעְתֶּ֗ם בְּקוֹל֙ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֔ם וּלְכֹ֖ל אֲשֶׁר שְׁלָחַ֥נִי אֲלֵיכֶֽם

And I have this day declared to you; but you have not obeyed the voice of YHWH your God, nor any for the which he has sent me to you.

וְעַתָּה֙ יָדֹ֣עַ תֵּֽדְע֔וּ כִּ֗י בַּחֶ֛רֶב בָּרָעָ֥ב וּבַדֶּ֖בֶר תָּמ֑וּתוּ בַּמָּקוֹם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר חֲפַצְתֶּ֔ם לָב֖וֹא לָג֥וּר שָֽׁם

Now therefore know certainly that you shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence, in the place whither you desire to go to sojourn.
