The Book of Jeremiah, Chapter 22ירמיהו 22

כֹּ֚ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה רֵ֖ד בֵּֽית מֶ֣לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֑ה וְדִבַּרְתָּ֣ שָׁ֔ם אֶת הַדָּבָ֖ר הַזֶּֽה

Thus says YHWH; Go down to the house of the king of Judah, and speak there this word,

וְאָֽמַרְתָּ֙ שְׁמַ֣ע דְּבַר יְהוָ֔ה מֶ֣לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֔ה הַיֹּשֵׁ֖ב עַל כִּסֵּ֣א דָוִ֑ד אַתָּ֤ה וַעֲבָדֶ֨יךָ֙ וְעַמְּךָ֔ הַבָּאִ֖ים בַּשְּׁעָרִ֥ים הָאֵֽלֶּה

And say, Hear the word of YHWH, O king of Judah, that sittest upon the throne of David, you, and your servants, and your people that enter in by these gates:

כֹּ֣ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֗ה עֲשׂ֤וּ מִשְׁפָּט֙ וּצְדָקָ֔ה וְהַצִּ֥ילוּ גָז֖וּל מִיַּ֣ד עָשׁ֑וֹק וְגֵר֩ יָת֨וֹם וְאַלְמָנָ֤ה אַל תֹּנוּ֙ אַל תַּחְמֹ֔סוּ וְדָ֣ם נָקִ֔י אַֽל תִּשְׁפְּכ֖וּ בַּמָּק֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה

Thus says YHWH; Execute you judgment and righteousness, and deliver the spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor: and do no wrong, do no violence to the stranger, the fatherless, nor the widow, neither shed innocent blood in this place.

כִּ֤י אִם עָשׂוֹ֙ תַּֽעֲשׂ֔וּ אֶת הַדָּבָ֖ר הַזֶּ֑ה וּבָ֣אוּ בְשַׁעֲרֵ֣י הַבַּ֣יִת הַזֶּ֡ה מְלָכִים֩ יֹשְׁבִ֨ים לְדָוִ֜ד עַל כִּסְא֗וֹ רֹֽכְבִים֙ בָּרֶ֣כֶב וּבַסּוּסִ֔ים ה֥וּא ועבדו וַעֲבָדָ֖יו וְעַמּֽוֹ

For if you do this thing indeed, then shall there enter in by the gates of this house kings sitting upon the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, he, and his servants, and his people.

וְאִם֙ לֹ֣א תִשְׁמְע֔וּ אֶת הַדְּבָרִ֖ים הָאֵ֑לֶּה בִּ֤י נִשְׁבַּ֨עְתִּי֙ נְאֻם יְהוָ֔ה כִּי לְחָרְבָּ֥ה יִֽהְיֶ֖ה הַבַּ֥יִת הַזֶּֽה

But if you will not hear these words, I swear by myself, says YHWH, that this house shall become a desolation.

כִּֽי כֹ֣ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֗ה עַל בֵּית֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֔ה גִּלְעָ֥ד אַתָּ֛ה לִ֖י רֹ֣אשׁ הַלְּבָנ֑וֹן אִם לֹ֤א אֲשִֽׁיתְךָ֙ מִדְבָּ֔ר עָרִ֖ים לֹ֥א נושבה נוֹשָֽׁבוּ

For thus says YHWH to the king's house of Judah; You Gilead to me, the head of Lebanon: surely I will make you a wilderness, cities are not inhabited.

וְקִדַּשְׁתִּ֥י עָלֶ֛יךָ מַשְׁחִתִ֖ים אִ֣ישׁ וְכֵלָ֑יו וְכָֽרְתוּ֙ מִבְחַ֣ר אֲרָזֶ֔יךָ וְהִפִּ֖ילוּ עַל הָאֵֽשׁ

And I will prepare destroyers against you, every one with his weapons: and they shall cut down your choice cedars, and cast into the fire.

וְעָֽבְרוּ֙ גּוֹיִ֣ם רַבִּ֔ים עַ֖ל הָעִ֣יר הַזֹּ֑את וְאָֽמְרוּ֙ אִ֣ישׁ אֶל רֵעֵ֔הוּ עַל מֶ֨ה עָשָׂ֤ה יְהוָה֙ כָּ֔כָה לָעִ֥יר הַגְּדוֹלָ֖ה הַזֹּֽאת

And many nations shall pass by this city, and they shall say every man to his neighbour, Wherefore has YHWH done thus to this great city?

וְאָ֣מְר֔וּ עַ֚ל אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָֽזְב֔וּ אֶת בְּרִ֥ית יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹֽהֵיהֶ֑ם וַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲו֛וּ לֵאלֹהִ֥ים אֲחֵרִ֖ים וַיַּעַבְדֽוּם

Then they shall answer, Because they have forsaken the covenant of YHWH their God, and worshipped other gods, and served them.

אַל תִּבְכּ֣וּ לְמֵ֔ת וְאַל תָּנֻ֖דוּ ל֑וֹ בְּכ֤וּ בָכוֹ֙ לַֽהֹלֵ֔ךְ כִּ֣י לֹ֤א יָשׁוּב֙ ע֔וֹד וְרָאָ֖ה אֶת אֶ֥רֶץ מוֹלַדְתּֽוֹ

Weep you not for the dead, neither bemoan him: weep sore for him that goeth away: for he shall return no more, nor see his native country.

כִּ֣י כֹ֣ה אָֽמַר יְ֠הוָה אֶל שַׁלֻּ֨ם בֶּן יֹאשִׁיָּ֜הוּ מֶ֣לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֗ה הַמֹּלֵךְ֙ תַּ֚חַת יֹאשִׁיָּ֣הוּ אָבִ֔יו אֲשֶׁ֥ר יָצָ֖א מִן הַמָּק֣וֹם הַזֶּ֑ה לֹֽא יָשׁ֥וּב שָׁ֖ם עֽוֹד

For thus says YHWH touching Shallum the son of Josiah king of Judah, which reigned instead of Josiah his father, which went forth out of this place; He shall not return thither any more:

כִּ֗י בִּמְק֛וֹם אֲשֶׁר הִגְל֥וּ אֹת֖וֹ שָׁ֣ם יָמ֑וּת וְאֶת הָאָ֥רֶץ הַזֹּ֖את לֹֽא יִרְאֶ֥ה עֽוֹד

But he shall die in the place whither they have led him captive, and shall see this land no more.

ה֣וֹי בֹּנֶ֤ה בֵיתוֹ֙ בְּֽלֹא צֶ֔דֶק וַעֲלִיּוֹתָ֖יו בְּלֹ֣א מִשְׁפָּ֑ט בְּרֵעֵ֨הוּ֙ יַעֲבֹ֣ד חִנָּ֔ם וּפֹעֲל֖וֹ לֹ֥א יִתֶּן לֽוֹ

Woe to him that buildeth his house by unrighteousness, and his chambers by wrong; useth his neighbour's service without wages, and giveth him not for his work;

הָאֹמֵ֗ר אֶבְנֶה לִּי֙ בֵּ֣ית מִדּ֔וֹת וַעֲלִיּ֖וֹת מְרֻוָּחִ֑ים וְקָ֤רַֽע לוֹ֙ חַלּוֹנָ֔י וְסָפ֣וּן בָּאָ֔רֶז וּמָשׁ֖וֹחַ בַּשָּׁשַֽׁר

That says, I will build me a wide house and large chambers, and cutteth him out windows; and cieled with cedar, and painted with vermilion.

הֲתִֽמְלֹ֔ךְ כִּ֥י אַתָּ֖ה מְתַחֲרֶ֣ה בָאָ֑רֶז אָבִ֜יךָ הֲל֧וֹא אָכַ֣ל וְשָׁתָ֗ה וְעָשָׂ֤ה מִשְׁפָּט֙ וּצְדָקָ֔ה אָ֖ז ט֥וֹב לֽוֹ

Shalt you reign, because you closest in cedar? did not your father eat and drink, and do judgment and justice, then well with him?

דָּ֛ן דִּין עָנִ֥י וְאֶבְי֖וֹן אָ֣ז ט֑וֹב הֲלוֹא הִ֛יא הַדַּ֥עַת אֹתִ֖י נְאֻם יְהוָֽה

He judged the cause of the poor and needy; then well not this to know me? says YHWH.

כִּ֣י אֵ֤ין עֵינֶ֨יךָ֙ וְלִבְּךָ֔ כִּ֖י אִם עַל בִּצְעֶ֑ךָ וְעַ֤ל דַּֽם הַנָּקִי֙ לִשְׁפּ֔וֹךְ וְעַל הָעֹ֥שֶׁק וְעַל הַמְּרוּצָ֖ה לַעֲשֽׂוֹת

But your eyes and your heart not but for your covetousness, and for to shed innocent blood, and for oppression, and for violence, to do .

לָכֵ֞ן כֹּֽה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֗ה אֶל יְהוֹיָקִ֤ים בֶּן יֹאשִׁיָּ֨הוּ֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֔ה לֹא יִסְפְּד֣וּ ל֔וֹ ה֥וֹי אָחִ֖י וְה֣וֹי אָח֑וֹת לֹא יִסְפְּד֣וּ ל֔וֹ ה֥וֹי אָד֖וֹן וְה֥וֹי הֹדֹֽה

Therefore thus says YHWH concerning Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah; They shall not lament for him, , Ah my brother! or, Ah sister! they shall not lament for him, , Ah lord! or, Ah his glory!

קְבוּרַ֥ת חֲמ֖וֹר יִקָּבֵ֑ר סָח֣וֹב וְהַשְׁלֵ֔ךְ מֵהָ֖לְאָה לְשַׁעֲרֵ֥י יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם

He shall be buried with the burial of an ass, drawn and cast forth beyond the gates of Jerusalem.

עֲלִ֤י הַלְּבָנוֹן֙ וּֽצְעָ֔קִי וּבַבָּשָׁ֖ן תְּנִ֣י קוֹלֵ֑ךְ וְצַֽעֲקִי֙ מֵֽעֲבָרִ֔ים כִּ֥י נִשְׁבְּר֖וּ כָּל מְאַהֲבָֽיִךְ

Go up to Lebanon, and cry; and lift up your voice in Bashan, and cry from the passages: for all your lovers are destroyed.

דִּבַּ֤רְתִּי אֵלַ֨יִךְ֙ בְּשַׁלְוֺתַ֔יִךְ אָמַ֖רְתְּ לֹ֣א אֶשְׁמָ֑ע זֶ֤ה דַרְכֵּךְ֙ מִנְּעוּרַ֔יִךְ כִּ֥י לֹֽא שָׁמַ֖עַתְּ בְּקוֹלִֽי

I spake to you in your prosperity; you saidst, I will not hear. This your manner from your youth, that you obeyedst not my voice.

כָּל רֹעַ֨יִךְ֙ תִּרְעֶה ר֔וּחַ וּֽמְאַהֲבַ֖יִךְ בַּשְּׁבִ֣י יֵלֵ֑כוּ כִּ֣י אָ֤ז תֵּבֹ֨שִׁי֙ וְנִכְלַ֔מְתְּ מִכֹּ֖ל רָעָתֵֽךְ

The wind shall eat up all your pastors, and your lovers shall go into captivity: surely then shall you be ashamed and confounded for all your wickedness.

ישבתי יֹשַׁבְתְּ֙ בַּלְּבָנ֔וֹן מקננתי מְקֻנַּ֖נְתְּ בָּֽאֲרָזִ֑ים מַה נֵּחַנְתְּ֙ בְּבֹא לָ֣ךְ חֲבָלִ֔ים חִ֖יל כַּיֹּלֵדָֽה

O inhabitant of Lebanon, that makest your nest in the cedars, how gracious shall you be when pangs come upon you, the pain as of a woman in travail!

חַי אָנִי֮ נְאֻם יְהוָה֒ כִּ֣י אִם יִהְיֶ֞ה כָּנְיָ֤הוּ בֶן יְהֽוֹיָקִים֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֔ה חוֹתָ֖ם עַל יַ֣ד יְמִינִ֑י כִּ֥י מִשָּׁ֖ם אֶתְּקֶֽנְךָּ

I live, says YHWH, though Coniah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah were the signet upon my right hand, yet would I pluck you thence;

וּנְתַתִּ֗יךָ בְּיַד֙ מְבַקְשֵׁ֣י נַפְשֶׁ֔ךָ וּבְיַ֛ד אֲשֶׁר אַתָּ֥ה יָג֖וֹר מִפְּנֵיהֶ֑ם וּבְיַ֛ד נְבוּכַדְרֶאצַּ֥ר מֶֽלֶךְ בָּבֶ֖ל וּבְיַ֥ד הַכַּשְׂדִּֽים

And I will give you into the hand of them that seek your life, and into the hand whose face you fearest, even into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of the Chaldeans.

וְהֵֽטַלְתִּ֣י אֹתְךָ֗ וְאֶֽת אִמְּךָ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר יְלָדַ֔תְךָ עַ֚ל הָאָ֣רֶץ אַחֶ֔רֶת אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹֽא יֻלַּדְתֶּ֖ם שָׁ֑ם וְשָׁ֖ם תָּמֽוּתוּ

And I will cast you out, and your mother that bare you, into another country, where you were not born; and there shall you die.

וְעַל הָאָ֗רֶץ אֲשֶׁר הֵ֛ם מְנַשְּׂאִ֥ים אֶת נַפְשָׁ֖ם לָשׁ֣וּב שָׁ֑ם שָׁ֖מָּה לֹ֥א יָשֽׁוּבוּ

But to the land whereunto they desire to return, thither shall they not return.

הַעֶ֨צֶב נִבְזֶ֜ה נָפ֗וּץ הָאִ֤ישׁ הַזֶּה֙ כָּנְיָ֔הוּ אִ֨ם כְּלִ֔י אֵ֥ין חֵ֖פֶץ בּ֑וֹ מַדּ֤וּעַ הֽוּטֲלוּ֙ ה֣וּא וְזַרְע֔וֹ וְהֻ֨שְׁלְכ֔וּ עַל הָאָ֖רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹא יָדָֽעוּ

this man Coniah a despised broken idol? a vessel wherein no pleasure? wherefore are they cast out, he and his seed, and are cast into a land which they know not?

אֶ֥רֶץ אֶ֖רֶץ אָ֑רֶץ שִׁמְעִ֖י דְּבַר יְהוָֽה

O earth, earth, earth, hear the word of YHWH.

כֹּ֣ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֗ה כִּתְב֞וּ אֶת הָאִ֤ישׁ הַזֶּה֙ עֲרִירִ֔י גֶּ֖בֶר לֹא יִצְלַ֣ח בְּיָמָ֑יו כִּי֩ לֹ֨א יִצְלַ֜ח מִזַּרְע֗וֹ אִ֚ישׁ יֹשֵׁב֙ עַל כִּסֵּ֣א דָוִ֔ד וּמֹשֵׁ֥ל ע֖וֹד בִּיהוּדָֽה

Thus says YHWH, Write you this man childless, a man shall not prosper in his days: for no man of his seed shall prosper, sitting upon the throne of David, and ruling any more in Judah.
