The Book of Jeremiah, Chapter 16ירמיהו 16

וַיְהִ֥י דְבַר יְהוָ֖ה אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר

The word of YHWH came also to me, saying,

לֹֽא תִקַּ֥ח לְךָ֖ אִשָּׁ֑ה וְלֹֽא יִהְי֤וּ לְךָ֙ בָּנִ֣ים וּבָנ֔וֹת בַּמָּק֖וֹם הַזֶּֽה

You shall not take you a wife, neither shall you have sons or daughters in this place.

כִּי כֹ֣ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֗ה עַל הַבָּנִים֙ וְעַל הַבָּנ֔וֹת הַיִּלּוֹדִ֖ים בַּמָּק֣וֹם הַזֶּ֑ה וְעַֽל אִמֹּתָ֞ם הַיֹּלְד֣וֹת אוֹתָ֗ם וְעַל אֲבוֹתָ֛ם הַמּוֹלִדִ֥ים אוֹתָ֖ם בָּאָ֥רֶץ הַזֹּֽאת

For thus says YHWH concerning the sons and concerning the daughters that are born in this place, and concerning their mothers that bare them, and concerning their fathers that begat them in this land;

מְמוֹתֵ֨י תַחֲלֻאִ֜ים יָמֻ֗תוּ לֹ֤א יִסָּֽפְדוּ֙ וְלֹ֣א יִקָּבֵ֔רוּ לְדֹ֛מֶן עַל פְּנֵ֥י הָאֲדָמָ֖ה יִֽהְי֑וּ וּבַחֶ֤רֶב וּבָֽרָעָב֙ יִכְל֔וּ וְהָיְתָ֤ה נִבְלָתָם֙ לְמַאֲכָ֔ל לְע֥וֹף הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם וּלְבֶהֱמַ֥ת הָאָֽרֶץ

They shall die of grievous deaths; they shall not be lamented; neither shall they be buried; they shall be as dung upon the face of the earth: and they shall be consumed by the sword, and by famine; and their carcases shall be meat for the fowls of heaven, and for the beasts of the earth.

כִּֽי כֹ֣ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֗ה אַל תָּבוֹא֙ בֵּ֣ית מַרְזֵ֔חַ וְאַל תֵּלֵ֣ךְ לִסְפּ֔וֹד וְאַל תָּנֹ֖ד לָהֶ֑ם כִּֽי אָסַ֨פְתִּי אֶת שְׁלוֹמִ֜י מֵאֵ֨ת הָעָ֤ם הַזֶּה֙ נְאֻם יְהוָ֔ה אֶת הַחֶ֖סֶד וְאֶת הָֽרַחֲמִֽים

For thus says YHWH, Enter not into the house of mourning, neither go to lament nor bemoan them: for I have taken away my peace from this people, says YHWH, lovingkindness and mercies.

וּמֵ֨תוּ גְדֹלִ֧ים וּקְטַנִּ֛ים בָּאָ֥רֶץ הַזֹּ֖את לֹ֣א יִקָּבֵ֑רוּ וְלֹֽא יִסְפְּד֣וּ לָהֶ֔ם וְלֹ֣א יִתְגֹּדַ֔ד וְלֹ֥א יִקָּרֵ֖חַ לָהֶֽם

Both the great and the small shall die in this land: they shall not be buried, neither shall lament for them, nor cut themselves, nor make themselves bald for them:

וְלֹֽא יִפְרְס֥וּ לָהֶ֛ם עַל אֵ֖בֶל לְנַחֲמ֣וֹ עַל מֵ֑ת וְלֹֽא יַשְׁק֤וּ אוֹתָם֙ כּ֣וֹס תַּנְחוּמִ֔ים עַל אָבִ֖יו וְעַל אִמּֽוֹ

Neither shall tear for them in mourning, to comfort them for the dead; neither shall give them the cup of consolation to drink for their father or for their mother.

וּבֵית מִשְׁתֶּ֥ה לֹא תָב֖וֹא לָשֶׁ֣בֶת אוֹתָ֑ם לֶאֱכֹ֖ל וְלִשְׁתּֽוֹת

You shall not also go into the house of feasting, to sit with them to eat and to drink.

כִּי֩ כֹ֨ה אָמַ֜ר יְהוָ֤ה צְבָאוֹת֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל הִנְנִ֨י מַשְׁבִּ֜ית מִן הַמָּק֥וֹם הַזֶּ֛ה לְעֵינֵיכֶ֖ם וּבִֽימֵיכֶ֑ם ק֤וֹל שָׂשׂוֹן֙ וְק֣וֹל שִׂמְחָ֔ה ק֥וֹל חָתָ֖ן וְק֥וֹל כַּלָּֽה

For thus says YHWH of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will cause to cease out of this place in your eyes, and in your days, the voice of mirth, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride.

וְהָיָ֗ה כִּ֤י תַגִּיד֙ לָעָ֣ם הַזֶּ֔ה אֵ֥ת כָּל הַדְּבָרִ֖ים הָאֵ֑לֶּה וְאָמְר֣וּ אֵלֶ֗יךָ עַל מֶה֩ דִבֶּ֨ר יְהוָ֤ה עָלֵ֨ינוּ֙ אֵ֣ת כָּל הָרָעָ֤ה הַגְּדוֹלָה֙ הַזֹּ֔את וּמֶ֤ה עֲוֺנֵ֨נוּ֙ וּמֶ֣ה חַטָּאתֵ֔נוּ אֲשֶׁ֥ר חָטָ֖אנוּ לַֽיהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ

And it shall come to pass, when you shall shew this people all these words, and they shall say to you, Wherefore has YHWH pronounced all this great evil against us? or what our iniquity? or what our sin that we have committed against YHWH our God?

וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֲלֵיהֶ֗ם עַל֩ אֲשֶׁר עָזְב֨וּ אֲבוֹתֵיכֶ֤ם אוֹתִי֙ נְאֻם יְהוָ֔ה וַיֵּלְכ֗וּ אַֽחֲרֵי֙ אֱלֹהִ֣ים אֲחֵרִ֔ים וַיַּעַבְד֖וּם וַיִּשְׁתַּחֲו֣וּ לָהֶ֑ם וְאֹתִ֣י עָזָ֔בוּ וְאֶת תּוֹרָתִ֖י לֹ֥א שָׁמָֽרוּ

Then shall you say to them, Because your fathers have forsaken me, says YHWH, and have walked after other gods, and have served them, and have worshipped them, and have forsaken me, and have not kept my law;

וְאַתֶּ֛ם הֲרֵעֹתֶ֥ם לַעֲשׂ֖וֹת מֵאֲבֽוֹתֵיכֶ֑ם וְהִנְּכֶ֣ם הֹלְכִ֗ים אִ֚ישׁ אַֽחֲרֵי֙ שְׁרִר֣וּת לִבּֽוֹ הָרָ֔ע לְבִלְתִּ֖י שְׁמֹ֥עַ אֵלָֽי

And you have done worse than your fathers; for, behold, you walk every one after the imagination of his evil heart, that they may not hearken to me:

וְהֵטַלְתִּ֣י אֶתְכֶ֗ם מֵעַל֙ הָאָ֣רֶץ הַזֹּ֔את עַל הָאָ֕רֶץ אֲשֶׁר֙ לֹ֣א יְדַעְתֶּ֔ם אַתֶּ֖ם וַאֲבֽוֹתֵיכֶ֑ם וַעֲבַדְתֶּם שָׁ֞ם אֶת אֱלֹהִ֤ים אֲחֵרִים֙ יוֹמָ֣ם וָלַ֔יְלָה אֲשֶׁ֛ר לֹֽא אֶתֵּ֥ן לָכֶ֖ם חֲנִינָֽה

Therefore will I cast you out of this land into a land that you know not, you nor your fathers; and there shall you serve other gods day and night; where I will not shew you favour.

לָכֵ֛ן הִנֵּֽה יָמִ֥ים בָּאִ֖ים נְאֻם יְהוָ֑ה וְלֹֽא יֵאָמֵ֥ר עוֹד֙ חַי יְהוָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֧ר הֶעֱלָ֛ה אֶת בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל מֵאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם

Therefore, behold, the days come, says YHWH, that it shall no more be said, YHWH liveth, that brought up the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt;

כִּ֣י אִם חַי יְהוָ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר הֶעֱלָ֜ה אֶת בְּנֵ֤י יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ צָפ֔וֹן וּמִכֹּל֙ הָֽאֲרָצ֔וֹת אֲשֶׁ֥ר הִדִּיחָ֖ם שָׁ֑מָּה וַהֲשִֽׁבֹתִים֙ עַל אַדְמָתָ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר נָתַ֖תִּי לַאֲבוֹתָֽם

But, YHWH liveth, that brought up the children of Israel from the land of the north, and from all the lands whither he had driven them: and I will bring them again into their land that I gave to their fathers.

הִנְנִ֨י שֹׁלֵ֜חַ לדוגים לְדַיָּגִ֥ים רַבִּ֛ים נְאֻם יְהוָ֖ה וְדִיג֑וּם וְאַֽחֲרֵי כֵ֗ן אֶשְׁלַח֙ לְרַבִּ֣ים צַיָּדִ֔ים וְצָד֞וּם מֵעַ֤ל כָּל הַר֙ וּמֵעַ֣ל כָּל גִּבְעָ֔ה וּמִנְּקִיקֵ֖י הַסְּלָעִֽים

Behold, I will send for many fishers, says YHWH, and they shall fish them; and after will I send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every mountain, and from every hill, and out of the holes of the rocks.

כִּ֤י עֵינַי֙ עַל כָּל דַּרְכֵיהֶ֔ם לֹ֥א נִסְתְּר֖וּ מִלְּפָנָ֑י וְלֹֽא נִצְפַּ֥ן עֲוֺנָ֖ם מִנֶּ֥גֶד עֵינָֽי

For mine eyes upon all their ways: they are not hid from my face, neither is their iniquity hid from mine eyes.

וְשִׁלַּמְתִּ֣י רִֽאשׁוֹנָ֗ה מִשְׁנֵ֤ה עֲוֺנָם֙ וְחַטָּאתָ֔ם עַ֖ל חַלְּלָ֣ם אֶת אַרְצִ֑י בְּנִבְלַ֤ת שִׁקּֽוּצֵיהֶם֙ וְתוֹעֲב֣וֹתֵיהֶ֔ם מָלְא֖וּ אֶת נַחֲלָתִֽי

And first I will recompense their iniquity and their sin double; because they have defiled my land, they have filled mine inheritance with the carcases of their detestable and abominable things.

יְהוָ֞ה עֻזִּ֧י וּמָעֻזִּ֛י וּמְנוּסִ֖י בְּי֣וֹם צָרָ֑ה אֵלֶ֗יךָ גּוֹיִ֤ם יָבֹ֨אוּ֙ מֵֽאַפְסֵי אָ֔רֶץ וְיֹאמְר֗וּ אַךְ שֶׁ֨קֶר֙ נָחֲל֣וּ אֲבוֹתֵ֔ינוּ הֶ֖בֶל וְאֵֽין בָּ֥ם מוֹעִֽיל

O YHWH, my strength, and my fortress, and my refuge in the day of affliction, the Gentiles shall come to you from the ends of the earth, and shall say, Surely our fathers have inherited lies, vanity, and wherein no profit.

הֲיַעֲשֶׂה לּ֥וֹ אָדָ֖ם אֱלֹהִ֑ים וְהֵ֖מָּה לֹ֥א אֱלֹהִֽים

Shall a man make gods to himself, and they no gods?

לָכֵן֙ הִנְנִ֣י מֽוֹדִיעָ֔ם בַּפַּ֣עַם הַזֹּ֔את אוֹדִיעֵ֥ם אֶת יָדִ֖י וְאֶת גְּבֽוּרָתִ֑י וְיָדְע֖וּ כִּֽי שְׁמִ֥י יְהוָֽה

Therefore, behold, I will this once cause them to know, I will cause them to know mine hand and my might; and they shall know that my name YHWH.
