The Book of Isaiah, Chapter 49ישעיהו 49

שִׁמְע֤וּ אִיִּים֙ אֵלַ֔י וְהַקְשִׁ֥יבוּ לְאֻמִּ֖ים מֵרָח֑וֹק יְהוָה֙ מִבֶּ֣טֶן קְרָאָ֔נִי מִמְּעֵ֥י אִמִּ֖י הִזְכִּ֥יר שְׁמִֽי

Listen, O isles, to me; and hearken, you people, from far; YHWH has called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother has he made mention of my name.

וַיָּ֤שֶׂם פִּי֙ כְּחֶ֣רֶב חַדָּ֔ה בְּצֵ֥ל יָד֖וֹ הֶחְבִּיאָ֑נִי וַיְשִׂימֵ֨נִי֙ לְחֵ֣ץ בָּר֔וּר בְּאַשְׁפָּת֖וֹ הִסְתִּירָֽנִי

And he has made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand has he hid me, and made me a polished shaft; in his quiver has he hid me;

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר לִ֖י עַבְדִּי אָ֑תָּה יִשְׂרָאֵ֕ל אֲשֶׁר בְּךָ֖ אֶתְפָּאָֽר

And said to me, You my servant, O Israel, in whom I will be glorified.

וַאֲנִ֤י אָמַ֨רְתִּי֙ לְרִ֣יק יָגַ֔עְתִּי לְתֹ֥הוּ וְהֶ֖בֶל כֹּחִ֣י כִלֵּ֑יתִי אָכֵן֙ מִשְׁפָּטִ֣י אֶת יְהוָ֔ה וּפְעֻלָּתִ֖י אֶת אֱלֹהָֽי

Then I said, I have laboured in vain, I have spent my strength for nought, and in vain: surely my judgment with YHWH, and my work with my God.

וְעַתָּ֣ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֗ה יֹצְרִ֤י מִבֶּ֨טֶן֙ לְעֶ֣בֶד ל֔וֹ לְשׁוֹבֵ֤ב יַֽעֲקֹב֙ אֵלָ֔יו וְיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לא ל֣וֹ יֵאָסֵ֑ף וְאֶכָּבֵד֙ בְּעֵינֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה וֵאלֹהַ֖י הָיָ֥ה עֻזִּֽי

And now, says YHWH that formed me from the womb his servant, to bring Jacob again to him, Though Israel be not gathered, yet shall I be glorious in the eyes of YHWH, and my God shall be my strength.

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר נָקֵ֨ל מִֽהְיוֹתְךָ֥ לִי֙ עֶ֔בֶד לְהָקִים֙ אֶת שִׁבְטֵ֣י יַעֲקֹ֔ב ונצירי וּנְצוּרֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לְהָשִׁ֑יב וּנְתַתִּ֨יךָ֙ לְא֣וֹר גּוֹיִ֔ם לִֽהְי֥וֹת יְשׁוּעָתִ֖י עַד קְצֵ֥ה הָאָֽרֶץ

And he said, It is a light thing that you shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give you for a light to the Gentiles, that you mayest be my salvation to the end of the earth.

כֹּ֣ה אָֽמַר יְהוָה֩ גֹּאֵ֨ל יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל קְדוֹשׁ֗וֹ לִבְזֹה נֶ֜פֶשׁ לִמְתָ֤עֵֽב גּוֹי֙ לְעֶ֣בֶד מֹשְׁלִ֔ים מְלָכִים֙ יִרְא֣וּ וָקָ֔מוּ שָׂרִ֖ים וְיִֽשְׁתַּחֲוּ֑וּ לְמַ֤עַן יְהוָה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר נֶאֱמָ֔ן קְדֹ֥שׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וַיִּבְחָרֶֽךָּ

Thus says YHWH, the Redeemer of Israel, his Holy One, to him whom man despiseth, to him whom the nation abhorreth, to a servant of rulers, Kings shall see and arise, princes also shall worship, because of YHWH that is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, and he shall choose you.

כֹּ֣ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֗ה בְּעֵ֤ת רָצוֹן֙ עֲנִיתִ֔יךָ וּבְי֥וֹם יְשׁוּעָ֖ה עֲזַרְתִּ֑יךָ וְאֶצָּרְךָ֗ וְאֶתֶּנְךָ֙ לִבְרִ֣ית עָ֔ם לְהָקִ֣ים אֶ֔רֶץ לְהַנְחִ֖יל נְחָל֥וֹת שֹׁמֵמֽוֹת

Thus says YHWH, In an acceptable time have I heard you, and in a day of salvation have I helped you: and I will preserve you, and give you for a covenant of the people, to establish the earth, to cause to inherit the desolate heritages;

לֵאמֹ֤ר לַֽאֲסוּרִים֙ צֵ֔אוּ לַאֲשֶׁ֥ר בַּחֹ֖שֶׁךְ הִגָּל֑וּ עַל דְּרָכִ֣ים יִרְע֔וּ וּבְכָל שְׁפָיִ֖ים מַרְעִיתָֽם

That you mayest say to the prisoners, Go forth; to them that in darkness, Shew yourselves. They shall feed in the ways, and their pastures in all high places.

לֹ֤א יִרְעָ֨בוּ֙ וְלֹ֣א יִצְמָ֔אוּ וְלֹא יַכֵּ֥ם שָׁרָ֖ב וָשָׁ֑מֶשׁ כִּי מְרַחֲמָ֣ם יְנַהֲגֵ֔ם וְעַל מַבּ֥וּעֵי מַ֖יִם יְנַהֲלֵֽם

They shall not hunger nor thirst; neither shall the heat nor sun smite them: for he that has mercy on them shall lead them, even by the springs of water shall he guide them.

וְשַׂמְתִּ֥י כָל הָרַ֖י לַדָּ֑רֶךְ וּמְסִלֹּתַ֖י יְרֻמֽוּן

And I will make all my mountains a way, and my highways shall be exalted.

הִנֵּה אֵ֕לֶּה מֵרָח֖וֹק יָבֹ֑אוּ וְהִֽנֵּה אֵ֨לֶּה֙ מִצָּפ֣וֹן וּמִיָּ֔ם וְאֵ֖לֶּה מֵאֶ֥רֶץ סִינִֽים

Behold, these shall come from far: and, lo, these from the north and from the west; and these from the land of Sinim.

רָנּ֤וּ שָׁמַ֨יִם֙ וְגִ֣ילִי אָ֔רֶץ יפצחו וּפִצְח֥וּ הָרִ֖ים רִנָּ֑ה כִּֽי נִחַ֤ם יְהוָה֙ עַמּ֔וֹ וַעֲנִיָּ֖ו יְרַחֵֽם

Sing, O heavens; and be joyful, O earth; and break forth into singing, O mountains: for YHWH has comforted his people, and will have mercy upon his afflicted.

וַתֹּ֥אמֶר צִיּ֖וֹן עֲזָבַ֣נִי יְהוָ֑ה וַאדֹנָ֖י שְׁכֵחָֽנִי

But Zion said, YHWH has forsaken me, and my Lord has forgotten me.

הֲתִשְׁכַּ֤ח אִשָּׁה֙ עוּלָ֔הּ מֵרַחֵ֖ם בֶּן בִּטְנָ֑הּ גַּם אֵ֣לֶּה תִשְׁכַּ֔חְנָה וְאָנֹכִ֖י לֹ֥א אֶשְׁכָּחֵֽךְ

Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget you.

הֵ֥ן עַל כַּפַּ֖יִם חַקֹּתִ֑יךְ חוֹמֹתַ֥יִךְ נֶגְדִּ֖י תָּמִֽיד

Behold, I have graven you upon the palms of hands; your walls continually before me.

מִֽהֲר֖וּ בָּנָ֑יִךְ מְהָֽרְסַ֥יִךְ וּמַחֲרִבַ֖יִךְ מִמֵּ֥ךְ יֵצֵֽאוּ

Your children shall make haste; your destroyers and they that made you waste shall go forth of you.

שְׂאִֽי סָבִ֤יב עֵינַ֨יִךְ֙ וּרְאִ֔י כֻּלָּ֖ם נִקְבְּצ֣וּ בָֽאוּ לָ֑ךְ חַי אָ֣נִי נְאֻם יְהוָ֗ה כִּ֤י כֻלָּם֙ כָּעֲדִ֣י תִלְבָּ֔שִׁי וּֽתְקַשְּׁרִ֖ים כַּכַּלָּֽה

Lift up your eyes round about, and behold: all these gather themselves together, come to you. I live, says YHWH, you shall surely clothe you with them all, as with an ornament, and bind them , as a bride .

כִּ֤י חָרְבֹתַ֨יִךְ֙ וְשֹׁ֣מְמֹתַ֔יִךְ וְאֶ֖רֶץ הֲרִֽסֻתֵ֑יךְ כִּ֤י עַתָּה֙ תֵּצְרִ֣י מִיּוֹשֵׁ֔ב וְרָחֲק֖וּ מְבַלְּעָֽיִךְ

For your waste and your desolate places, and the land of your destruction, shall even now be too narrow by reason of the inhabitants, and they that swallowed you up shall be far away.

ע֚וֹד יֹאמְר֣וּ בְאָזְנַ֔יִךְ בְּנֵ֖י שִׁכֻּלָ֑יִךְ צַר לִ֥י הַמָּק֖וֹם גְּשָׁה לִּ֥י וְאֵשֵֽׁבָה

The children which you shall have, after you have lost the other, shall say again in your ears, The place too strait for me: give place to me that I may dwell.

וְאָמַ֣רְתְּ בִּלְבָבֵ֗ךְ מִ֤י יָֽלַד לִי֙ אֶת אֵ֔לֶּה וַאֲנִ֥י שְׁכוּלָ֖ה וְגַלְמוּדָ֑ה גֹּלָ֣ה וְסוּרָ֗ה וְאֵ֨לֶּה֙ מִ֣י גִדֵּ֔ל הֵ֤ן אֲנִי֙ נִשְׁאַ֣רְתִּי לְבַדִּ֔י אֵ֖לֶּה אֵיפֹ֥ה הֵֽם

Then shall you say in your heart, Who has begotten me these, seeing I have lost my children, and am desolate, a captive, and removing to and fro? and who has brought up these? Behold, I was left alone; these, where they ?

כֹּֽה אָמַ֞ר אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֗ה הִנֵּ֨ה אֶשָּׂ֤א אֶל גּוֹיִם֙ יָדִ֔י וְאֶל עַמִּ֖ים אָרִ֣ים נִסִּ֑י וְהֵבִ֤יאוּ בָנַ֨יִךְ֙ בְּחֹ֔צֶן וּבְנֹתַ֖יִךְ עַל כָּתֵ֥ף תִּנָּשֶֽׂאנָה

Thus says YHWH YHWH, Behold, I will lift up mine hand to the Gentiles, and set up my standard to the people: and they shall bring your sons in arms, and your daughters shall be carried upon shoulders.

וְהָי֨וּ מְלָכִ֜ים אֹֽמְנַ֗יִךְ וְשָׂרֽוֹתֵיהֶם֙ מֵינִ֣יקֹתַ֔יִךְ אַפַּ֗יִם אֶ֚רֶץ יִשְׁתַּ֣חֲווּ לָ֔ךְ וַעֲפַ֥ר רַגְלַ֖יִךְ יְלַחֵ֑כוּ וְיָדַ֨עַתְּ֙ כִּֽי אֲנִ֣י יְהוָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹֽא יֵבֹ֖שׁוּ קוָֹֽי

And kings shall be your nursing fathers, and their queens your nursing mothers: they shall bow down to you with face toward the earth, and lick up the dust of your feet; and you shall know that I YHWH: for they shall not be ashamed that wait for me.

הֲיֻקַּ֥ח מִגִּבּ֖וֹר מַלְק֑וֹחַ וְאִם שְׁבִ֥י צַדִּ֖יק יִמָּלֵֽט

Shall the prey be taken from the mighty, or the lawful captive delivered?

כִּי כֹ֣ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֗ה גַּם שְׁבִ֤י גִבּוֹר֙ יֻקָּ֔ח וּמַלְק֥וֹחַ עָרִ֖יץ יִמָּלֵ֑ט וְאֶת יְרִיבֵךְ֙ אָנֹכִ֣י אָרִ֔יב וְאֶת בָּנַ֖יִךְ אָנֹכִ֥י אוֹשִֽׁיעַ

But thus says YHWH, Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered: for I will contend with him that contendeth with you, and I will save your children.

וְהַאֲכַלְתִּ֤י אֶת מוֹנַ֨יִךְ֙ אֶת בְּשָׂרָ֔ם וְכֶעָסִ֖יס דָּמָ֣ם יִשְׁכָּר֑וּן וְיָדְע֣וּ כָל בָּשָׂ֗ר כִּ֣י אֲנִ֤י יְהוָה֙ מֽוֹשִׁיעֵ֔ךְ וְגֹאֲלֵ֖ךְ אֲבִ֥יר יַעֲקֹֽב

And I will feed them that oppress you with their own flesh; and they shall be drunken with their own blood, as with sweet wine: and all flesh shall know that I YHWH your Saviour and your Redeemer, the mighty One of Jacob.
