The Book of Isaiah, Chapter 46ישעיהו 46

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Bel stooping, Nebo collapsing, idols loaded onto weary beasts, Israel addressed as the remnant carried from womb to old age by YHWH, the challenge to compare any manufactured god with the one who declares the end from the beginning, and the closing assurance that salvation is being brought near to Zion make Isaiah 46 a compact but powerful contrast chapter in the anti-idol sequence. It opens with a scene of humiliation for Babylon's gods. Bel bends down, Nebo collapses, and the images once treated as mighty now become burdens laid on animals and cattle. Far from delivering their worshipers, they themselves must be hauled away, and even then they cannot rescue the load or their own life from captivity. That spectacle establishes the chapter's controlling irony. False gods must be carried. Israel's God carries. The address to the house of Jacob and the remnant of the house of Israel develops that contrast with unusual tenderness. From the belly and from the womb YHWH has borne this people, and he promises to do so still into old age and gray hair. He made, he will carry, he will bear, and he will deliver. In a book so full of creator language, this chapter gives that theme a strongly pastoral form. Divine sovereignty is not only cosmic or imperial. It is sustaining, weight-bearing fidelity toward a worn remnant. From there the oracle turns back to mockery of idols. Gold is poured from the bag, silver is weighed, a smith is hired, and the product is called a god before which people bow and prostrate themselves. Yet once the image is lifted to its place, it can only stand there. It does not move. People cry to it and it does not answer; it cannot save from distress. The ridicule is severe, but its aim is moral awakening. Transgressors are told to remember this, to take courage, and to bring it back to heart. The remembering demanded here is not nostalgia but theological sanity. The former things of old must be recalled because YHWH alone is God and there is none like him. That uniqueness is then defined through sovereign foretelling and effective purpose. He declares the end from the beginning and from ancient time what has not yet been done, and what he says about his counsel and his pleasure he also accomplishes. The call of a bird of prey from the east, the man of his counsel from a far land, shows that history itself is being summoned into alignment with the divine plan. The closing movement turns that certainty toward the present spiritual problem. The stouthearted who are far from righteousness are told to listen, because YHWH is bringing his righteousness near and his salvation will not delay. Zion will receive salvation, and Israel will receive YHWH's beauty or glory. Taken together, toppled Babylonian gods, the carrying care of YHWH, the impotence of crafted idols, the demand to remember, the declaration of end-from-beginning sovereignty, and the nearness of saving righteousness form a chapter where the true God is known precisely by the fact that he does not need to be borne but instead bears his people and brings his purpose unfailingly to pass.

Translation & textual notes

The Hebrew base text here follows the Masoretic Text in the Leningrad tradition as represented by the Westminster Leningrad Codex / MorphHB diplomatic stream imported from OSHB; distinctively copyrighted apparatus from BHS or BHQ is not reproduced. Four linked movements shape the chapter: Babylon's great gods Bel and Nebo are pictured stooping and collapsing while their images become burdens on animals and cannot save themselves from captivity (vv. 1-2), the house of Jacob and the remnant of Israel are contrasted with those idols as a people borne by YHWH from womb to old age and delivered by him (vv. 3-4), idol manufacture and worship are ridiculed again through the language of weighed metals, hired smiths, carried images, and unanswered cries (vv. 5-7), transgressors are commanded to remember the former things and to recognize YHWH alone as the God who declares the end from the beginning and calls his purpose into effect from afar (vv. 8-11), and the close addresses the stouthearted who are far from righteousness with the assurance that YHWH is bringing near his righteousness and setting salvation in Zion for Israel his glory (vv. 12-13). Verses 1-2 should preserve the vivid reversal of the opening. Bel and Nebo, chief Babylonian deities, are not enthroned but stooping and collapsing. Their images become loads for animals, and the line about burdens for the weary should retain its heaviness. Verse 2 is especially pointed: they cannot rescue the burden and even their own life goes into captivity. Verses 3-4 then turn from satire to tender covenant speech and should be translated with full force on the bearing imagery. The remnant has been loaded upon or carried by YHWH from belly and womb onward, and the sequence in verse 4 - I am he, I will bear, I made, I will carry, I will bear, I will deliver - should remain audible in its repetitive reassurance. Verses 5-7 re-enter the anti-idol polemic and should keep the concrete details of manufacture and transport. Gold poured from a purse, silver weighed on scales, the hired smith, the completed image, the bowing worshiper, and the carried god who can only stand motionless in one place all build the case. Verse 7's unanswered cry is crucial, because the contrast with YHWH's actual saving activity is the chapter's theological center. Verses 8-11 move from mockery to exhortation and should preserve the moral urgency. Verse 8's combination of remembering, taking courage or showing manliness, and bringing the issue back to heart addresses transgressors directly. Verses 9-10 define divine uniqueness through foreknowledge and effective counsel: YHWH declares the end from the beginning and says that his purpose will stand and all his pleasure will be done. Verse 11's bird of prey from the east and man of counsel from a far land should remain concrete without overloading the translation with identification beyond the text's own force. The emphasis is on the summoning power of divine decree. Verses 12-13 close with a stern but hopeful address. The hearers are stouthearted and far from righteousness, yet YHWH's righteousness is being brought near and his salvation will not delay. Zion and Israel remain the goal, so the universal sovereignty language of the earlier material is finally focused into imminent saving action for God's own people. Taken together, the passage should therefore be translated as a chapter where the humiliating burden of idols is set against the lifelong bearing power of YHWH, and where the God who alone declares history's outcome also brings his saving righteousness near to Zion. Versification follows the MT. **Cruxes.** | Verse | Issue | | --- | --- | | none | none of note |
