The Book of Exodus, Chapter 39שמות 39

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The priestly vestments of ch.28 are fabricated exactly as commanded, sealed by a ninefold refrain of compliance; the finished tabernacle and every furnishing are then paraded before Moses for inspection, and he blesses the people in language deliberately echoing God's own seeing and blessing at creation's completion.

Translation & textual notes

Exodus 39 reports the manufacture of Aaron's priestly vestments (ephod, breastpiece, robe, tunics, turban, sash, and the golden plate) and then the presentation of the entire finished tabernacle to Moses for inspection. The Masoretic Text preserves a small number of Ketiv/Qere pairs typical of MT orthographic transmission: קצוותו/קְצוֹתָיו in v.4 and בריחו/בְּרִיחָיו in v.33, both trivial spelling variants of 'its edges/ends' and 'its bars' with no exegetical consequence. The chapter's dominant literary feature is the ninefold refrain 'just as YHWH commanded Moses' (vv.1, 5, 7, 21, 26, 29, 31, 32, 42), which structures the whole unit as a report of exact compliance with the instructions of Exod 28 and 35-39; this reaches a climax in v.43, where Moses' own inspection ('he saw... and behold, they had done it... so they had done it') and his blessing of the workers deliberately echo the language of Gen 1:31-2:3 (God saw all that he had made... it was very good... and God blessed... and sanctified it), casting the tabernacle's completion as a new-creation event that anticipates its erection and the descent of the glory-cloud in ch. 40.

From the blue, purple, and scarlet yarn they made finely worked garments for ministering in the holy place, and they made the holy garments that were for Aaron, just as YHWH had commanded Moses.

Narrative resumption opening a new subsection (priestly vestments)asyndeton
The chapter opens with a fronted partitive phrase ('from the blue...') before the main verb, echoing the instruction of Exod 28:1-5; the closing 'as YHWH commanded Moses' refrain (repeated at vv.5,7,21,26,29,31,32,42) frames the whole chapter as a report of faithful execution answering chs. 28 and 39's design.

Thus all the work of the tabernacle, the tent of meeting, was finished; and the sons of Israel did according to all that YHWH had commanded Moses; so they had done.

Major structural hinge: closes the whole vestments-and-tabernacle construction narrative (chs. 35-39) and opens the presentation scene (vv.33-43)wə-
The verb כָּלָה 'was finished' is a deliberate echo of Gen 2:1-2 ('the heavens and the earth were finished... and God finished his work'), casting the tabernacle's completion as a new-creation event; the doubled compliance formula ('according to all that YHWH commanded... so they had done') is the chapter's thematic keynote, repeated in the closing verses (42-43).

Moses saw all the work, and behold, they had done it just as YHWH had commanded -- so they had done it; and Moses blessed them.

Climactic closing verse of the chapter: inspection, triple compliance-affirmation, and benedictionwə-
The chapter's capstone: וַיַּרְא מֹשֶׁה ... וְהִנֵּה עָשׂוּ אֹתָהּ recalls וַיַּרְא אֱלֹהִים ... וְהִנֵּה טוֹב מְאֹד of Gen 1:31, and וַיְבָרֶךְ אֹתָם מֹשֶׁה recalls God's blessing at the completion of creation (Gen 1:28; 2:3); the tabernacle's completion is thus deliberately patterned as a new creation, with Moses in the role of the blessing, sabbath-inaugurating God -- a theme carried forward into ch. 40's erection and consecration of the tabernacle.
