The Book of Exodus, Chapter 40שמות 40

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

One year to the day after the exodus, Moses erects the tabernacle, positions every furnishing in its ordained place, anoints and consecrates structure and priests alike — obedience marked seven times by 'just as YHWH commanded Moses' — until the glory of YHWH fills the finished sanctuary so completely that even Moses cannot enter.

Translation & textual notes

Exodus 40 is transmitted with unusual stability in the MT; the Samaritan Pentateuch and LXX show only minor harmonizing variants (the LXX's ordering of vv.6-8 and its rendering of some technical furniture-terms diverge slightly, reflecting translational rather than textual difference). Three features anchor the chapter's shape. First, the New Year's Day erection (v.2, resumed in v.17) places the tabernacle's rising exactly one year after the exodus (Exod 12:2), making the sanctuary's inauguration a calendrical new beginning as deliberate as the exodus itself. Second, the refrain כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוָּה יְהוָה אֶת מֹשֶׁה, 'just as YHWH commanded Moses,' recurs seven times in the erection narrative (vv.19,21,23,25,27,29,32) and, together with the compliance notice of v.16 and the closing וַיְכַל מֹשֶׁה אֶת הַמְּלָאכָה of v.33 (echoing 39:32,42-43), binds execution word-for-word to the divine blueprint of chs. 25-31 — a rhetorical strategy unique in scale within the Pentateuch, underscoring Moses's exact and total obedience. Third, the glory-cloud climax of vv.34-38 deliberately echoes the Sinai theophany (cf. Exod 24:15-18, where the cloud covered the mountain six days before Moses entered it) while now resting on the tabernacle itself, and it anticipates the wilderness itinerary of Numbers, where the cloud's lifting and settling governs when Israel breaks and makes camp (Num 9:15-23). The tablets of the testimony placed in the ark (v.20) and the priestly consecration formula (vv.12-15) also tie this chapter tightly to Exod 25 and 28-29, making ch. 40 less a narrative episode than the ceremonial fulfillment-report closing the entire Sinai tabernacle complex (chs. 25-40).

Negative counterpart — the rule stated conditionallyו
A conditional clause (level 1, subordinate to the governing principle of v.36) states the negative corollary: no cloud-lifting means no departure, reinforcing that Israel's movements are wholly determined by divine initiative, not human planning.

For the cloud of YHWH was on the tabernacle by day, and fire was in it by night, before the eyes of all the house of Israel, throughout all their journeys.

Concluding summary — the standing sign for the whole wilderness periodasyndeton
The chapter and book close with an explanatory כִּי-clause summarizing the double sign — cloud by day, fire by night — visible to the whole house of Israel throughout all their journeys; this final verse both closes Exodus's redemption-and-covenant narrative and opens directly onto Numbers, where the itinerary the cloud governs is narrated in full.
