The Book of Exodus, Chapter 30שמות 30

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

A capstone of holy furnishings and formulas: the golden incense altar burning before the veil, the half-shekel ransom averting plague at Israel's census, the bronze laver guarding priestly approach with washed hands and feet, and the jealously guarded recipes of anointing oil and incense, each sealed against profane imitation.

Translation & textual notes

Exodus 30 completes the tabernacle furnishing instructions (chs. 25-31) with items easily mistaken for a postscript: the incense altar, the census ransom, the laver, and two proprietary formulas (anointing oil and incense). The MT text itself is well preserved and largely uncontested. The chief text-critical crux is comparative: the Old Greek (LXX) famously relocates much of this material — the incense altar, laver, anointing oil, and incense — earlier, interleaving it into chs. 26-28 alongside the other tabernacle furniture, which has fueled discussion of the tabernacle account's compositional history (whether the MT's order or the LXX's reflects an earlier stage). The MT's own placement here, as a capstone unit before the artisan-summons of ch. 31, coheres with its literary logic: last-mentioned yet 'most holy.' Notable lexical threads include כֹּפֶר (v.12, 'ransom') and כִּפֻּרִים (vv.10, 16, 'atonement[s]'), both from כפר, tying the chapter's disparate parts — altar, census, laver, oil, incense — to a single theological thread of atonement and holiness. The repeated formula קֹדֶשׁ קָדָשִׁים ('holy of holies' = most holy, vv.10, 29, 36) and the twin כָּרַת ('cut off') sanctions (vv.33, 38) frame the oil and incense as Israel's most jealously guarded sancta.
