The Book of Exodus, Chapter 29שמות 29

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The ordination liturgy consecrates Aaron and his sons through washing, vesting, anointing, and the blood of sin, burnt, and filling-offerings applied to ear, thumb, and toe; the altar itself is sanctified for seven days, and the chapter closes with YHWH's own purpose declared: 'that I might dwell among them.'

Translation & textual notes

Exodus 29 is textually stable in the MT, with the Samaritan Pentateuch and the Qumran fragments (4QExod-Levf and related witnesses) showing only minor orthographic variation; the LXX occasionally harmonizes wording with the parallel ordination narrative in Leviticus 8 (which narrates Moses' execution of these very instructions) and smooths a few of the chapter's characteristically dense construct chains, but attests no substantive divergence in content. The chapter's distinctive vocabulary cluster is worth flagging for the interlinear: מִלֵּא יָד ('fill the hand') is a fixed idiom for ordination/installation to office, most plausibly rooted in the literal filling of the ordinand's hands with portions of the sacrifice (vv. 24-25, cf. the derived noun מִלֻּאִים, 'ordination offering', vv. 22, 26-27, 31, 34); the rare תְּנוּךְ ('lobe/tip', of the ear, v. 20) occurs almost exclusively in this ordination-blood formula and its parallel in Leviticus 8 and 14; and תָּמִיד ('continual') in vv. 38-42 gives the twice-daily whole-burnt offering its standing technical name in later Second Temple and rabbinic usage. The chapter closes (vv. 43-46) with an unusual shift to unmarked first-person divine speech that both Leviticus 8-9 and later tradition treat as the theological rationale underlying every preceding ritual instruction: the ordination and the altar's consecration exist so that YHWH may dwell (שָׁכַן) among Israel and be known as the God of the exodus.
