The Book of Exodus, Chapter 31שמות 31

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

YHWH names and Spirit-fills Bezalel and Oholiab as master craftsmen for the tabernacle, then commands the Sabbath as a perpetual sign of Israel's sanctification, rooted explicitly in the six-day creation and God's own rest — before handing Moses the two tablets of the Testimony, written by the finger of God.

Translation & textual notes

The MT of Exodus 31 is textually stable and closely mirrors the Samaritan Pentateuch, with no major variant traditions affecting sense; the chief text-critical interest lies instead in the Septuagint's handling of the surrounding tabernacle-construction material (Exod 35-40), where the Old Greek reorders and abbreviates the execution narrative relative to MT, though ch. 31 itself (still part of the initial instruction, not the execution report) is rendered closely and in the same order in both traditions. Internally, the chapter deliberately echoes Genesis: רוּחַ אֱלֹהִים 'the Spirit of God' filling Bezalel (v. 3) recalls Gen 1:2, and the creation-warrant of vv. 16-17 quotes the six-day/seventh-day pattern and vocabulary of Gen 1:1 and 2:2-3 (עָשָׂה, שָׁבַת) almost verbatim, binding tabernacle-building and Sabbath-keeping into a single theology of imitatio Dei. The doubled legal formula מוֹת יוּמָת ('he shall surely be put to death,' vv. 14-15) and the intensive שַׁבַּת שַׁבָּתוֹן ('a Sabbath of complete rest,' v. 15, elsewhere only of the Day of Atonement) are stock but forceful MT legal idioms, not corruptions; and the anthropomorphic phrase 'written with the finger of God' (v. 18; cf. 8:15) together with וַיִּנָּפַשׁ 'and was refreshed' (v. 17, elsewhere only 23:12) are original, deliberately vivid expressions rather than scribal accretions.
