The Book of Deuteronomy, Chapter 32דברים 32

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Moses' valedictory song indicts Israel for abandoning the Rock who fathered and fed them in the wilderness, provoking measure-for-measure judgment; yet YHWH's own oath — 'I, I am he... I kill and I make alive' — turns wrath to vindication. The epilogue makes the Song 'your life' and sends Moses up Nebo to view, but not enter, the land.

Translation & textual notes

Deuteronomy 32 preserves two of the Hebrew Bible's most celebrated textual cruxes. At v.8, the MT's לְמִסְפַּר בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל ('according to the number of the sons of Israel') anchors the primeval allotment of the nations to Israel's future population; but the Qumran fragment 4QDeutj reads בני אלהים ('sons of God'), and the LXX renders κατὰ ἀριθμὸν ἀγγέλων θεοῦ ('according to the number of the angels of God'), preserving an older tradition in which Elyon apportioned the nations among members of the divine council, with YHWH then claiming Israel as his own direct portion (v.9). Most critical editions now judge the Qumran/LXX reading text-critically prior; the MT's 'sons of Israel' likely reflects a later, monotheizing simplification of an uncomfortable polytheistic backdrop. The second major crux falls at v.43: the MT's four terse cola are matched by a longer, eight-line text in 4QDeutq and the LXX, which open by summoning the 'heavens' rather than only the 'nations' and command the 'sons of God'/angels to bow before him — a line quoted almost verbatim in Hebrews 1:6 ('let all God's angels worship him'), entirely absent from the MT. Beyond these cruxes, the Song's rare vocabulary (פְּתַלְתֹּל, קֶטֶב, פְּרָעוֹת), unusual grammatical forms, and archaic yiqtol-preterites functioning as simple pasts mark it as among the oldest poetry preserved in the Pentateuch, its orthography still bearing traces of pre-exilic spelling conventions largely smoothed over elsewhere in the MT. Versification follows the MT.

The Song opens with a covenant-lawsuit (rîb) convention, summoning heaven and earth as witnesses (cf. 4:26; 30:19; 31:28). The chiastic frame (heavens/speak // hear/earth) casts Moses as prophetic mouthpiece for the whole cosmos to hear.

Thesis statement: theodicy of the Rockasyndeton
The Song's theological center: before any indictment, YHWH's character is declared flawless (תָּמִים), just (מִשְׁפָּט), faithful (אֱמוּנָה), and without עָוֶל. הַצּוּר, introduced here, becomes the poem's controlling epithet (vv.4,15,18,30,31,37); this verse is the standard against which Israel's corruption (v.5) and YHWH's judicial dealings (vv.19ff) will be measured.

One of the most textually and syntactically difficult verses in the MT (note the unstated subject of שִׁחֵת and the disputed force of מוּמָם); the sense is nonetheless clear: against the Rock's declared perfection (v.4), Israel's own corruption — not God's — is the problem, opening the extended indictment that follows.

When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of man, he set the boundaries of the peoples according to the number of the sons of Israel.

Cosmic backstory: the allotment of the nationsasyndeton
The Song's most famous textual crux (see text_note): MT's 'sons of Israel' anchors the primeval apportioning of nations to Israel's number, while 4QDeutj and the LXX read 'sons of God' (angels), implying a divine-council allotment of nations to lesser gods, with YHWH then claiming Israel directly (v.9). Functions as cosmological preface to Israel's election.

But Jeshurun grew fat and kicked; you grew fat, thick, gorged — and he forsook God who made him, and treated the Rock of his salvation as a fool.

Turning point: apostasy from prosperityasyndeton
The Song's structural hinge: after the lavish provision of vv.10-14, prosperity breeds rebellion (וַיִּשְׁמַן יְשֻׁרוּן וַיִּבְעָט), with bitter wordplay on Jeshurun's name ('upright one' turned crooked) and on נבל (Israel called 'foolish' in v.6, now making the Rock the object of that same scorn); the threefold verb-triad (שָׁמַנְתָּ עָבִיתָ כָּשִׂיתָ) dramatizes bloated self-satisfaction before the apostasy is named explicitly.

Measure-for-measure reversal (quoted in Rom 10:19)asyndeton
The Song's most theologically pregnant verse: a mirrored bicolon (הֵם/וַאֲנִי; קנא/כעס; לא אל/לא עם) turns Israel's own provocation-logic back on them — since Israel provoked God with a 'non-god,' God will provoke Israel with a 'non-people.' Paul quotes this exactly in Romans 10:19 as scriptural warrant for Gentile inclusion provoking Jewish jealousy.

For YHWH will vindicate his people and have compassion on his servants, when he sees that their power is gone, and there is none remaining, bond or free.

The turning point: from judgment to compassionכִּי
The Song's decisive pivot: YHWH's compassion is triggered precisely by Israel's total helplessness (v.36b) — not by their merit but by the exhaustion of every human resource, echoing v.39's 'none can deliver' and preparing the great self-declaration that follows.

Rejoice, O nations, with his people, for he will avenge the blood of his servants, and will render vengeance to his adversaries, and will atone for his land, his people.

The Song's finale: universal acclaim and atonementכִּי
The climactic close of the Song, and a major textual crux (see text_note): MT's compressed הַרְנִינוּ גוֹיִם עַמּוֹ contrasts with the longer Qumran (4QDeutq) and LXX readings, which summon the HEAVENS and command the 'sons of God'/angels to bow — the LXX form is quoted in Hebrews 1:6 of the exalted Christ. The verse closes with the double atonement of land and people, resolving the Song's covenant lawsuit.
