The Book of Deuteronomy, Chapter 25דברים 25

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Chapter 25 closes Deuteronomy's law code with measured-justice statutes: the capped flogging, the unmuzzled ox, the levirate duty and its shaming refusal, the wife's immodest rescue, honest weights, and the command to remember Amalek only in order to erase his memory — justice bounded by proportion, kinship, and honesty, then turned without limit against the one nation that fenced no bounds at all.

Translation & textual notes

Deuteronomy 25 is textually stable in the MT, transmitted via the Leningrad Codex substantially as the received text, though several cruxes invite comment. The flogging law's 'forty' (v.3) generated the well-attested 'forty-minus-one' safeguard (m. Makkot 3:10; cf. 2 Cor 11:24 'forty stripes save one'), a fence around the text rather than a textual variant. The levirate terms יָבָם/יְבָמָה (vv.5,7,9) and the denominative verb יִבֵּם (vv.5,7) are rare, occurring almost exclusively in this pericope and Genesis 38, without certain Akkadian or Ugaritic cognates, though comparable customs are attested across the ancient Near East. The hapax-rare verb חָסַם (v.4, 'to muzzle') and the plural-only מְבֻשִׁים (v.11, 'genitals') are both uncommon enough that the Septuagint and Vulgate render them with some interpretive latitude. Verse 12's וְקַצֹּתָה אֶת כַּפָּהּ ('you shall cut off her hand') is the Torah's only unambiguous mutilation penalty; rabbinic exegesis (b. Bava Qamma 28a) reads the verb as monetary compensation rather than literal amputation — a debate with no text-critical basis but major halakhic consequence. The chapter closes (vv.17-19) with the Amalek pericope read liturgically as Shabbat Zakhor before Purim, linking this legal text to Esther's Haman, a descendant of Agag the Amalekite — a reception-historical link, not a textual one, but central to the passage's afterlife.

Forty stripes he may strike him; he shall not exceed it, lest he continue to strike him beyond these with a great blow, and your brother be degraded in your eyes.

Climactic specification, with motive clauseasyndeton
The chapter's most-quoted number. The פֶּן-clause supplies the rationale (עִלָּה) for the cap: exceeding forty risks 'degrading' the guilty man — corporal punishment must never erase his standing as 'brother,' bounding justice by kinship even at its harshest.

לֹא תַחְסֹ֥ם שׁ֖וֹר בְּדִישֽׁוֹ

You shall not muzzle an ox while it is threshing.

Independent aphorism (topical pivot)asyndeton
A single terse prohibition, asyndetically juxtaposed with the flogging law yet thematically continuous: a laborer — even an animal — earns the right to benefit from its own toil. Paul allegorizes it twice (1 Cor 9:9; 1 Tim 5:18) as a principle for human wage-laborers and ministers.

Introduces the levirate institution with the same כִּי-protasis formula as v.1, signaling a new legal unit. The technical vocabulary (יָבָם, יִבֵּם) is otherwise almost confined to Genesis 38 and this passage — the background presupposed by the book of Ruth.

Purpose/result of v.5's unionוְ
States the legal EFFECT of the levirate marriage: the resulting son is legally reckoned to the dead brother, not the biological father. The verb יִמָּחֶה ('blotted out') anticipates v.19's תִּמְחֶה — here what must NOT be erased is a name; there, what MUST be erased is Amalek's.

Apodosis: the penaltyוְ
The Torah's only explicit mutilation sanction, and its terseness has generated enduring debate: read literally (so most premodern interpreters) or, per rabbinic tradition (b. And when YHWH your God gives you rest from all your enemies around you, in the land that YHWH your God is giving you as an inheritance to possess, you shall blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven. Do not forget.

Apodosis: the command proper, closing the law-codeוְ
The chapter's — and the whole law-code's (chs. 12-26) — closing command: erase Amalek's memory once rest is secured. The zakhor/timcheh paradox is deliberate: Israel must actively REMEMBER Amalek in order to carry out the command to ERASE his remembrance; the terse two-word close, 'do not forget,' seals the entire legal corpus.
