The Book of Deuteronomy, Chapter 24דברים 24

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Deuteronomy 24 pairs the Torah's only divorce procedure (vv. 1-4, ground of the Hillel/Shammai debate and Matthew 19) with a run of humane statutes - a bridegroom's year of joy, pledges that respect a debtor's dignity, same-day wages, no vicarious punishment, and gleanings for the sojourner, orphan, and widow - framed by Israel's memory of slavery in Egypt.

Translation & textual notes

The MT of Deuteronomy 24 is textually stable, its cantillation marking the long casuistic protasis of vv. 1-3 against the single apodosis of v. 4 - a structure often flattened in translation into three separate commands. Two cruxes dominate discussion. First, עֶרְוַת דָּבָר (v. 1, 'nakedness of a thing') is the Torah's only stated ground for divorce and is nowhere defined; it became the center of the Hillel/Shammai dispute (m. Gittin 9:10) and lies behind the Pharisees' test question in Matt 19:3 and Mark 10:2. Second, הֻטַּמָּאָה (v. 4) is a rare Hotpaal perfect of טמא, 'she has been made to be defiled' - debate persists over whether the second marriage itself, not any impropriety in it, constitutes the defilement barring return. The formula וְכָתַב לָהּ סֵפֶר כְּרִיתֻת וְנָתַן בְּיָדָהּ וְשִׁלְּחָהּ (vv. 1, 3) recurs nearly verbatim, and the threefold gleaning refrain (vv. 19-21) and Egypt-memory clause (vv. 18, 22) likewise repeat by design, not scribal duplication. The Samaritan Pentateuch and LXX (which renders עֶרְוַת דָּבָר as ἄσχημον πρᾶγμα) show only minor stylistic variants. Versification follows the MT throughout.

When a man takes a wife and marries her, and it happens that she does not find favor in his eyes because he has found some indecency in her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her away from his house,

Opens the extended casuistic protasis (vv. 1-3)asyndeton
Verse 1 begins a long case-law protasis spanning vv. 1-3, piling up weqatal clauses (marries, it-happens, writes, gives, sends-away) that narrate the sequence of a first marriage's dissolution; the apodosis proper does not arrive until v. 4. The law regulates rather than commands divorce, and famously leaves the ground for it ('some indecency') undefined.

Verse 3 extends the protasis begun in v. 1 through a second hypothetical (the second husband either divorces her too, using the same write-give-send formula verbatim, or dies), still awaiting the apodosis of v. 4; the repetition of the divorce formula underlines that the woman's situation after v. 3 is formally identical whether by second divorce or widowhood.

Apodosis of the protasis begun in v. 1: the ban on remarriage to the first husbandasyndeton
Verse 4 finally supplies the apodosis withheld since v. 1: the first husband may not remarry the woman he divorced once she has been defiled by an intervening marriage. The motive clauses (abomination before YHWH, not bringing sin on the land) frame the law as protecting the land's purity, not merely regulating property; this verse, quoted nowhere directly by Jesus, nonetheless supplies the legal backdrop for Matt 5:31-32/19:3-9 and Mark 10:2-12.

New case law: exemption for the newly marriedasyndeton
A fresh casuistic law (כִּי + imperfect) shifts from divorce to marital happiness: the bridegroom's military and civic exemption for a full year, climaxing in the positive purpose clause 'and he shall gladden his wife.' Structurally this begins the chapter's turn from the divorce case (vv. 1-4) to the series of humane social statutes running through v. 22.

When you reap your harvest in your field and forget a sheaf in the field, you shall not go back to get it; it shall be for the sojourner, the orphan, and the widow, that YHWH your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.

New case law: the forgotten sheafasyndeton
Opens the gleaning triad (vv. 19-21: sheaf, olive, vineyard) that gives the sojourner, orphan, and widow a standing legal claim on the harvest margins rather than mere charity; the positive framing (a blessing on all the worker's undertakings) recasts the loss as a covenantal investment. This is the law that structures the gleaning scene of the book of Ruth (Ruth 2).

The second of the triad, terser than v. 19 (no separate motive clause, since v. 19's rationale carries forward); 'do not go over the boughs again' (לא תפאר) leaves the second pass of fruit for the vulnerable.

The third and final member of the triad, matching v. 20's terse form; the three-fold repetition of 'it shall be for the sojourner, the orphan, and the widow' across vv. 19-21 rhetorically enacts the very provision it legislates.
