The First Book of Samuel, Chapter 2שמואל א 2

וַתִּתְפַּלֵּ֤ל חַנָּה֙ וַתֹּאמַ֔ר עָלַ֤ץ לִבִּי֙ בַּֽיהוָ֔ה רָ֥מָה קַרְנִ֖י בַּֽיהוָ֑ה רָ֤חַב פִּי֙ עַל א֣וֹיְבַ֔י כִּ֥י שָׂמַ֖חְתִּי בִּישׁוּעָתֶֽךָ

And Hannah prayed, and said, My heart rejoiceth in YHWH, mine horn is exalted in YHWH: my mouth is enlarged over mine enemies; because I rejoice in your salvation.

אֵין קָד֥וֹשׁ כַּיהוָ֖ה כִּ֣י אֵ֣ין בִּלְתֶּ֑ךָ וְאֵ֥ין צ֖וּר כֵּאלֹהֵֽינוּ

none holy as YHWH: for none beside you: neither any rock like our God.

אַל תַּרְבּ֤וּ תְדַבְּרוּ֙ גְּבֹהָ֣ה גְבֹהָ֔ה יֵצֵ֥א עָתָ֖ק מִפִּיכֶ֑ם כִּ֣י אֵ֤ל דֵּעוֹת֙ יְהוָ֔ה ולא וְל֥וֹ נִתְכְּנ֖וּ עֲלִלֽוֹת

Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let arrogancy come out of your mouth: for YHWH a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.

קֶ֥שֶׁת גִּבֹּרִ֖ים חַתִּ֑ים וְנִכְשָׁלִ֖ים אָ֥זְרוּ חָֽיִל

The bows of the mighty men broken, and they that stumbled are girded with strength.

שְׂבֵעִ֤ים בַּלֶּ֨חֶם֙ נִשְׂכָּ֔רוּ וּרְעֵבִ֖ים חָדֵ֑לּוּ עַד עֲקָרָה֙ יָלְדָ֣ה שִׁבְעָ֔ה וְרַבַּ֥ת בָּנִ֖ים אֻמְלָֽלָה

full have hired out themselves for bread; and hungry ceased: so that the barren has born seven; and she that has many children is waxed feeble.

יְהוָ֖ה מֵמִ֣ית וּמְחַיֶּ֑ה מוֹרִ֥יד שְׁא֖וֹל וַיָּֽעַל

YHWH killeth, and maketh alive: he bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up.

יְהוָ֖ה מוֹרִ֣ישׁ וּמַעֲשִׁ֑יר מַשְׁפִּ֖יל אַף מְרוֹמֵֽם

YHWH maketh poor, and maketh rich: he bringeth low, and lifteth up.

מֵקִ֨ים מֵעָפָ֜ר דָּ֗ל מֵֽאַשְׁפֹּת֙ יָרִ֣ים אֶבְי֔וֹן לְהוֹשִׁיב֙ עִם נְדִיבִ֔ים וְכִסֵּ֥א כָב֖וֹד יַנְחִלֵ֑ם כִּ֤י לַֽיהוָה֙ מְצֻ֣קֵי אֶ֔רֶץ וַיָּ֥שֶׁת עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם תֵּבֵֽל

He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth YHWH's, and he has set the world upon them.

רַגְלֵ֤י חסידו חֲסִידָיו֙ יִשְׁמֹ֔ר וּרְשָׁעִ֖ים בַּחֹ֣שֶׁךְ יִדָּ֑מּוּ כִּֽי לֹ֥א בְכֹ֖חַ יִגְבַּר אִֽישׁ

He will keep the feet of his saints, and the wicked shall be silent in darkness; for by strength shall no man prevail.

יְהוָ֞ה יֵחַ֣תּוּ מריבו מְרִיבָ֗יו עלו עָלָיו֙ בַּשָּׁמַ֣יִם יַרְעֵ֔ם יְהוָ֖ה יָדִ֣ין אַפְסֵי אָ֑רֶץ וְיִתֶּן עֹ֣ז לְמַלְכּ֔וֹ וְיָרֵ֖ם קֶ֥רֶן מְשִׁיחֽוֹ

The adversaries of YHWH shall be broken to pieces; out of heaven shall he thunder upon them: YHWH shall judge the ends of the earth; and he shall give strength to his king, and exalt the horn of his anointed.

וַיֵּ֧לֶךְ אֶלְקָנָ֛ה הָרָמָ֖תָה עַל בֵּית֑וֹ וְהַנַּ֗עַר הָיָ֤ה מְשָׁרֵת֙ אֶת יְהוָ֔ה אֶת פְּנֵ֖י עֵלִ֥י הַכֹּהֵֽן

And Elkanah went to Ramah to his house. And the child did minister to YHWH before Eli the priest.

וּבְנֵ֥י עֵלִ֖י בְּנֵ֣י בְלִיָּ֑עַל לֹ֥א יָדְע֖וּ אֶת יְהוָֽה

Now the sons of Eli sons of Belial; they knew not YHWH.

וּמִשְׁפַּ֥ט הַכֹּהֲנִ֖ים אֶת הָעָ֑ם כָּל אִ֞ישׁ זֹבֵ֣חַ זֶ֗בַח וּבָ֨א נַ֤עַר הַכֹּהֵן֙ כְּבַשֵּׁ֣ל הַבָּשָׂ֔ר וְהַמַּזְלֵ֛ג שְׁלֹ֥שׁ הַשִּׁנַּ֖יִם בְּיָדֽוֹ

And the priests' custom with the people , when any man offered sacrifice, the priest's servant came, while the flesh was in seething, with a fleshhook of three teeth in his hand;

וְהִכָּ֨ה בַכִּיּ֜וֹר א֣וֹ בַדּ֗וּד א֤וֹ בַקַּלַּ֨חַת֙ א֣וֹ בַפָּר֔וּר כֹּ֚ל אֲשֶׁ֣ר יַעֲלֶ֣ה הַמַּזְלֵ֔ג יִקַּ֥ח הַכֹּהֵ֖ן בּ֑וֹ כָּ֚כָה יַעֲשׂ֣וּ לְכָל יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל הַבָּאִ֥ים שָׁ֖ם בְּשִׁלֹֽה

And he struck into the pan, or kettle, or caldron, or pot; all that the fleshhook brought up the priest took for himself. So they did in Shiloh to all the Israelites that came thither.

גַּם֮ בְּטֶרֶם֮ יַקְטִר֣וּן אֶת הַחֵלֶב֒ וּבָ֣א נַ֣עַר הַכֹּהֵ֗ן וְאָמַר֙ לָאִ֣ישׁ הַזֹּבֵ֔חַ תְּנָ֣ה בָשָׂ֔ר לִצְל֖וֹת לַכֹּהֵ֑ן וְלֹֽא יִקַּ֧ח מִמְּךָ֛ בָּשָׂ֥ר מְבֻשָּׁ֖ל כִּ֥י אִם חָֽי

Also before they burnt the fat, the priest's servant came, and said to the man that sacrificed, Give flesh to roast for the priest; for he will not have sodden flesh of you, but raw.

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֵלָ֜יו הָאִ֗ישׁ קַטֵּ֨ר יַקְטִיר֤וּן כַּיּוֹם֙ הַחֵ֔לֶב וְקַ֨ח לְךָ֔ כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר תְּאַוֶּ֖ה נַפְשֶׁ֑ךָ וְאָמַ֥ר לו לֹא֙ כִּ֚י עַתָּ֣ה תִתֵּ֔ן וְאִם לֹ֖א לָקַ֥חְתִּי בְחָזְקָֽה

And any man said to him, Let them not fail to burn the fat presently, and take as your soul desireth; then he would answer him, ; but you shall give now: and if not, I will take by force.

וַתְּהִ֨י חַטַּ֧את הַנְּעָרִ֛ים גְּדוֹלָ֥ה מְאֹ֖ד אֶת פְּנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה כִּ֤י נִֽאֲצוּ֙ הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֔ים אֵ֖ת מִנְחַ֥ת יְהוָֽה

Wherefore the sin of the young men was very great before YHWH: for men abhorred the offering of YHWH.

וּשְׁמוּאֵ֕ל מְשָׁרֵ֖ת אֶת פְּנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה נַ֕עַר חָג֖וּר אֵפ֥וֹד בָּֽד

But Samuel ministered before YHWH, a child, girded with a linen ephod.

וּמְעִ֤יל קָטֹן֙ תַּעֲשֶׂה לּ֣וֹ אִמּ֔וֹ וְהַעַלְתָ֥ה ל֖וֹ מִיָּמִ֣ים יָמִ֑ימָה בַּֽעֲלוֹתָהּ֙ אֶת אִישָׁ֔הּ לִזְבֹּ֖חַ אֶת זֶ֥בַח הַיָּמִֽים

Moreover his mother made him a little coat, and brought to him from year to year, when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice.

וּבֵרַ֨ךְ עֵלִ֜י אֶת אֶלְקָנָ֣ה וְאֶת אִשְׁתּ֗וֹ וְאָמַר֙ יָשֵׂם֩ יְהוָ֨ה לְךָ֥ זֶ֨רַע֙ מִן הָאִשָּׁ֣ה הַזֹּ֔את תַּ֚חַת הַשְּׁאֵלָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר שָׁאַ֖ל לַֽיהוָ֑ה וְהָלְכ֖וּ לִמְקֹמֽוֹ

And Eli blessed Elkanah and his wife, and said, YHWH give you seed of this woman for the loan which is lent to YHWH. And they went to their own home.

כִּֽי פָקַ֤ד יְהוָה֙ אֶת חַנָּ֔ה וַתַּ֛הַר וַתֵּ֥לֶד שְׁלֹשָֽׁה בָנִ֖ים וּשְׁתֵּ֣י בָנ֑וֹת וַיִּגְדַּ֛ל הַנַּ֥עַר שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל עִם יְהוָֽה

And YHWH visited Hannah, so that she conceived, and bare three sons and two daughters. And the child Samuel grew before YHWH.

וְעֵלִ֖י זָקֵ֣ן מְאֹ֑ד וְשָׁמַ֗ע אֵת֩ כָּל אֲשֶׁ֨ר יַעֲשׂ֤וּן בָּנָיו֙ לְכָל יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וְאֵ֤ת אֲשֶֽׁר יִשְׁכְּבוּן֙ אֶת הַנָּשִׁ֔ים הַצֹּ֣בְא֔וֹת פֶּ֖תַח אֹ֥הֶל מוֹעֵֽד

Now Eli was very old, and heard all that his sons did to all Israel; and how they lay with the women that assembled the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לָהֶ֔ם לָ֥מָּה תַעֲשׂ֖וּן כַּדְּבָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֑לֶּה אֲשֶׁ֨ר אָנֹכִ֤י שֹׁמֵ֨עַ֙ אֶת דִּבְרֵיכֶ֣ם רָעִ֔ים מֵאֵ֖ת כָּל הָעָ֥ם אֵֽלֶּה

And he said to them, Why do you such things? for I hear of your evil dealings by all this people.

אַ֖ל בָּנָ֑י כִּ֠י לֽוֹא טוֹבָ֤ה הַשְּׁמֻעָה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אָנֹכִ֣י שֹׁמֵ֔עַ מַעֲבִרִ֖ים עַם יְהוָֽה

Nay, my sons; for no good report that I hear: you make YHWH's people to transgress.

אִם יֶחֱטָ֨א אִ֤ישׁ לְאִישׁ֙ וּפִֽלְל֣וֹ אֱלֹהִ֔ים וְאִ֤ם לַֽיהוָה֙ יֶֽחֱטָא אִ֔ישׁ מִ֖י יִתְפַּלֶּל ל֑וֹ וְלֹ֤א יִשְׁמְעוּ֙ לְק֣וֹל אֲבִיהֶ֔ם כִּֽי חָפֵ֥ץ יְהוָ֖ה לַהֲמִיתָֽם

If one man sin against another, the judge shall judge him: but if a man sin against YHWH, who shall intreat for him? Notwithstanding they hearkened not to the voice of their father, because YHWH would slay them.

וְהַנַּ֣עַר שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל הֹלֵ֥ךְ וְגָדֵ֖ל וָט֑וֹב גַּ֚ם עִם יְהוָ֔ה וְגַ֖ם עִם אֲנָשִֽׁים

And the child Samuel grew on, and was in favour both with YHWH, and also with men.

וַיָּבֹ֥א אִישׁ אֱלֹהִ֖ים אֶל עֵלִ֑י וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֗יו כֹּ֚ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה הֲנִגְלֹ֤ה נִגְלֵ֨יתִי֙ אֶל בֵּ֣ית אָבִ֔יךָ בִּֽהְיוֹתָ֥ם בְּמִצְרַ֖יִם לְבֵ֥ית פַּרְעֹֽה

And there came a man of God to Eli, and said to him, Thus says YHWH, Did I plainly appear to the house of your father, when they were in Egypt in Pharaoh's house?

וּבָחֹ֣ר אֹ֠תוֹ מִכָּל שִׁבְטֵ֨י יִשְׂרָאֵ֥ל לִי֙ לְכֹהֵ֔ן לַעֲל֣וֹת עַֽל מִזְבְּחִ֗י לְהַקְטִ֥יר קְטֹ֛רֶת לָשֵׂ֥את אֵפ֖וֹד לְפָנָ֑י וָֽאֶתְּנָה֙ לְבֵ֣ית אָבִ֔יךָ אֶת כָּל אִשֵּׁ֖י בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל

And did I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel my priest, to offer upon mine altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod before me? and did I give to the house of your father all the offerings made by fire of the children of Israel?

לָ֣מָּה תִבְעֲט֗וּ בְּזִבְחִי֙ וּבְמִנְחָתִ֔י אֲשֶׁ֥ר צִוִּ֖יתִי מָע֑וֹן וַתְּכַבֵּ֤ד אֶת בָּנֶ֨יךָ֙ מִמֶּ֔נִּי לְהַבְרִֽיאֲכֶ֗ם מֵרֵאשִׁ֛ית כָּל מִנְחַ֥ת יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לְעַמִּֽי

Wherefore kick you at my sacrifice and at mine offering, which I have commanded habitation; and honourest your sons above me, to make yourselves fat with the chiefest of all the offerings of Israel my people?

לָכֵ֗ן נְאֻם יְהוָה֮ אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ אָמ֣וֹר אָמַ֔רְתִּי בֵּֽיתְךָ֙ וּבֵ֣ית אָבִ֔יךָ יִתְהַלְּכ֥וּ לְפָנַ֖י עַד עוֹלָ֑ם וְעַתָּ֤ה נְאֻם יְהוָה֙ חָלִ֣ילָה לִּ֔י כִּֽי מְכַבְּדַ֥י אֲכַבֵּ֖ד וּבֹזַ֥י יֵקָֽלּוּ

Wherefore YHWH God of Israel says, I said indeed your house, and the house of your father, should walk before me for ever: but now YHWH says, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed.

הִנֵּה֙ יָמִ֣ים בָּאִ֔ים וְגָֽדַעְתִּי֙ אֶת זְרֹ֣עֲךָ֔ וְאֶת זְרֹ֖עַ בֵּ֣ית אָבִ֑יךָ מִֽהְי֥וֹת זָקֵ֖ן בְּבֵיתֶֽךָ

Behold, the days come, that I will cut off your arm, and the arm of your father's house, that there shall not be an old man in your house.

וְהִבַּטְתָּ֙ צַ֣ר מָע֔וֹן בְּכֹ֥ל אֲשֶׁר יֵיטִ֖יב אֶת יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְלֹֽא יִהְיֶ֥ה זָקֵ֛ן בְּבֵיתְךָ֖ כָּל הַיָּמִֽים

And you shall see an enemy habitation, in all which shall give Israel: and there shall not be an old man in your house for ever.

וְאִ֗ישׁ לֹֽא אַכְרִ֤ית לְךָ֙ מֵעִ֣ם מִזְבְּחִ֔י לְכַלּ֥וֹת אֶת עֵינֶ֖יךָ וְלַאֲדִ֣יב אֶת נַפְשֶׁ֑ךָ וְכָל מַרְבִּ֥ית בֵּיתְךָ֖ יָמ֥וּתוּ אֲנָשִֽׁים

And the man of your, I shall not cut off from mine altar, to consume your eyes, and to grieve your heart: and all the increase of your house shall die in the flower of their age.

וְזֶה לְּךָ֣ הָא֗וֹת אֲשֶׁ֤ר יָבֹא֙ אֶל שְׁנֵ֣י בָנֶ֔יךָ אֶל חָפְנִ֖י וּפִֽינְחָ֑ס בְּי֥וֹם אֶחָ֖ד יָמ֥וּתוּ שְׁנֵיהֶֽם

And this a sign to you, that shall come upon your two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas; in one day they shall die both of them.

וַהֲקִימֹתִ֥י לִי֙ כֹּהֵ֣ן נֶאֱמָ֔ן כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר בִּלְבָבִ֥י וּבְנַפְשִׁ֖י יַעֲשֶׂ֑ה וּבָנִ֤יתִי לוֹ֙ בַּ֣יִת נֶאֱמָ֔ן וְהִתְהַלֵּ֥ךְ לִפְנֵֽי מְשִׁיחִ֖י כָּל הַיָּמִֽים

And I will raise me up a faithful priest, shall do according to which in mine heart and in my mind: and I will build him a sure house; and he shall walk before mine anointed for ever.

וְהָיָ֗ה כָּל הַנּוֹתָר֙ בְּבֵ֣יתְךָ֔ יָבוֹא֙ לְהִשְׁתַּחֲוֺ֣ת ל֔וֹ לַאֲג֥וֹרַת כֶּ֖סֶף וְכִכַּר לָ֑חֶם וְאָמַ֗ר סְפָחֵ֥נִי נָ֛א אֶל אַחַ֥ת הַכְּהֻנּ֖וֹת לֶאֱכֹ֥ל פַּת לָֽחֶם

And it shall come to pass, every one that is left in your house shall come crouch to him for a piece of silver and a morsel of bread, and shall say, Put me, I pray you, into one of the priests' offices, that I may eat a piece of bread.
