The First Book of Samuel, Chapter 18שמואל א 18

וַיְהִ֗י כְּכַלֹּתוֹ֙ לְדַבֵּ֣ר אֶל שָׁא֔וּל וְנֶ֨פֶשׁ֙ יְה֣וֹנָתָ֔ן נִקְשְׁרָ֖ה בְּנֶ֣פֶשׁ דָּוִ֑ד ויאהבו וַיֶּאֱהָבֵ֥הוּ יְהוֹנָתָ֖ן כְּנַפְשֽׁוֹ

And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking to Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.

וַיִּקָּחֵ֥הוּ שָׁא֖וּל בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֑וּא וְלֹ֣א נְתָנ֔וֹ לָשׁ֖וּב בֵּ֥ית אָבִֽיו

And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father's house.

וַיִּכְרֹ֧ת יְהוֹנָתָ֛ן וְדָוִ֖ד בְּרִ֑ית בְּאַהֲבָת֥וֹ אֹת֖וֹ כְּנַפְשֽׁוֹ

Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.

וַיִּתְפַּשֵּׁ֣ט יְהוֹנָתָ֗ן אֶֽת הַמְּעִיל֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָלָ֔יו וַֽיִּתְּנֵ֖הוּ לְדָוִ֑ד וּמַדָּ֕יו וְעַד חַרְבּ֥וֹ וְעַד קַשְׁתּ֖וֹ וְעַד חֲגֹרֽוֹ

And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle.

וַיֵּצֵ֨א דָוִ֜ד בְּכֹל֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר יִשְׁלָחֶ֤נּוּ שָׁאוּל֙ יַשְׂכִּ֔יל וַיְשִׂמֵ֣הוּ שָׁא֔וּל עַ֖ל אַנְשֵׁ֣י הַמִּלְחָמָ֑ה וַיִּיטַב֙ בְּעֵינֵ֣י כָל הָעָ֔ם וְגַ֕ם בְּעֵינֵ֖י עַבְדֵ֥י שָׁאֽוּל

And David went out whithersoever Saul sent him, behaved himself wisely: and Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul's servants.

וַיְהִ֣י בְּבוֹאָ֗ם בְּשׁ֤וּב דָּוִד֙ מֵהַכּ֣וֹת אֶת הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔י וַתֵּצֶ֨אנָה הַנָּשִׁ֜ים מִכָּל עָרֵ֤י יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ לשור לָשִׁ֣יר וְהַמְּחֹל֔וֹת לִקְרַ֖את שָׁא֣וּל הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ בְּתֻפִּ֥ים בְּשִׂמְחָ֖ה וּבְשָׁלִשִֽׁים

And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of musick.

וַֽתַּעֲנֶ֛ינָה הַנָּשִׁ֥ים הַֽמְשַׂחֲק֖וֹת וַתֹּאמַ֑רְןָ הִכָּ֤ה שָׁאוּל֙ באלפו בַּאֲלָפָ֔יו וְדָוִ֖ד בְּרִבְבֹתָֽיו

And the women answered as they played, and said, Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.

וַיִּ֨חַר לְשָׁא֜וּל מְאֹ֗ד וַיֵּ֤רַע בְּעֵינָיו֙ הַדָּבָ֣ר הַזֶּ֔ה וַיֹּ֗אמֶר נָתְנ֤וּ לְדָוִד֙ רְבָב֔וֹת וְלִ֥י נָתְנ֖וּ הָאֲלָפִ֑ים וְע֥וֹד ל֖וֹ אַ֥ךְ הַמְּלוּכָֽה

And Saul was very wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed to David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed thousands: and can he have more but the kingdom?

וַיְהִ֥י שָׁא֖וּל עון עוֹיֵ֣ן אֶת דָּוִ֑ד מֵהַיּ֥וֹם הַה֖וּא וָהָֽלְאָה

And Saul eyed David from that day and forward.

וַיְהִ֣י מִֽמָּחֳרָ֗ת וַתִּצְלַ֣ח רוּחַ֩ אֱלֹהִ֨ים רָעָ֤ה אֶל שָׁאוּל֙ וַיִּתְנַבֵּ֣א בְתוֹךְ הַבַּ֔יִת וְדָוִ֛ד מְנַגֵּ֥ן בְּיָד֖וֹ כְּי֣וֹם בְּי֑וֹם וְהַחֲנִ֖ית בְּיַד שָׁאֽוּל

And it came to pass on the morrow, that the evil spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of the house: and David played with his hand, as at other times: and a javelin in Saul's hand.

וַיָּ֤טֶל שָׁאוּל֙ אֶֽת הַחֲנִ֔ית וַיֹּ֕אמֶר אַכֶּ֥ה בְדָוִ֖ד וּבַקִּ֑יר וַיִּסֹּ֥ב דָּוִ֛ד מִפָּנָ֖יו פַּעֲמָֽיִם

And Saul cast the javelin; for he said, I will smite David even to the wall . And David avoided out of his presence twice.

וַיִּרָ֥א שָׁא֖וּל מִלִּפְנֵ֣י דָוִ֑ד כִּֽי הָיָ֤ה יְהוָה֙ עִמּ֔וֹ וּמֵעִ֥ם שָׁא֖וּל סָֽר

And Saul was afraid of David, because YHWH was with him, and was departed from Saul.

וַיְסִרֵ֤הוּ שָׁאוּל֙ מֵֽעִמּ֔וֹ וַיְשִׂמֵ֥הוּ ל֖וֹ שַׂר אָ֑לֶף וַיֵּצֵ֥א וַיָּבֹ֖א לִפְנֵ֥י הָעָֽם

Therefore Saul removed him from him, and made him his captain over a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people.

וַיְהִ֥י דָוִ֛ד לְכָל דָּרְכָ֖ו מַשְׂכִּ֑יל וַֽיהוָ֖ה עִמּֽוֹ

And David behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and YHWH with him.

וַיַּ֣רְא שָׁא֔וּל אֲשֶׁר ה֖וּא מַשְׂכִּ֣יל מְאֹ֑ד וַיָּ֖גָר מִפָּנָֽיו

Wherefore when Saul saw that he behaved himself very wisely, he was afraid of him.

וְכָל יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וִיהוּדָ֔ה אֹהֵ֖ב אֶת דָּוִ֑ד כִּֽי ה֛וּא יוֹצֵ֥א וָבָ֖א לִפְנֵיהֶֽם

But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he went out and came in before them.

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר שָׁא֜וּל אֶל דָּוִ֗ד הִנֵּה֩ בִתִּ֨י הַגְּדוֹלָ֤ה מֵרַב֙ אֹתָהּ֙ אֶתֶּן לְךָ֣ לְאִשָּׁ֔ה אַ֚ךְ הֱיֵה לִּ֣י לְבֶן חַ֔יִל וְהִלָּחֵ֖ם מִלְחֲמ֣וֹת יְהוָ֑ה וְשָׁא֣וּל אָמַ֗ר אַל תְּהִ֤י יָדִי֙ בּ֔וֹ וּתְהִי ב֖וֹ יַד פְּלִשְׁתִּֽים

And Saul said to David, Behold my elder daughter Merab, her will I give you to wife: only be you valiant for me, and fight YHWH's battles. For Saul said, Let not mine hand be upon him, but let the hand of the Philistines be upon him.

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר דָּוִ֜ד אֶל שָׁא֗וּל מִ֤י אָֽנֹכִי֙ וּמִ֣י חַיַּ֔י מִשְׁפַּ֥חַת אָבִ֖י בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל כִּֽי אֶהְיֶ֥ה חָתָ֖ן לַמֶּֽלֶךְ

And David said to Saul, Who I? and what my life, my father's family in Israel, that I should be son in law to the king?

וַיְהִ֗י בְּעֵ֥ת תֵּ֛ת אֶת מֵרַ֥ב בַּת שָׁא֖וּל לְדָוִ֑ד וְהִ֧יא נִתְּנָ֛ה לְעַדְרִיאֵ֥ל הַמְּחֹלָתִ֖י לְאִשָּֽׁה

But it came to pass at the time when Merab Saul's daughter should have been given to David, that she was given to Adriel the Meholathite to wife.

וַתֶּאֱהַ֛ב מִיכַ֥ל בַּת שָׁא֖וּל אֶת דָּוִ֑ד וַיַּגִּ֣דוּ לְשָׁא֔וּל וַיִּשַׁ֥ר הַדָּבָ֖ר בְּעֵינָֽיו

And Michal Saul's daughter loved David: and they told Saul, and the thing pleased him.

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר שָׁא֜וּל אֶתְּנֶ֤נָּה לּוֹ֙ וּתְהִי ל֣וֹ לְמוֹקֵ֔שׁ וּתְהִי ב֖וֹ יַד פְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים וַיֹּ֤אמֶר שָׁאוּל֙ אֶל דָּוִ֔ד בִּשְׁתַּ֛יִם תִּתְחַתֵּ֥ן בִּ֖י הַיּֽוֹם

And Saul said, I will give him her, that she may be a snare to him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him. Wherefore Saul said to David, You shall this day be my son in law in the twain.

וַיְצַ֨ו שָׁא֜וּל אֶת עֲבָדָ֗ו דַּבְּר֨וּ אֶל דָּוִ֤ד בַּלָּט֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר הִנֵּ֨ה חָפֵ֤ץ בְּךָ֙ הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וְכָל עֲבָדָ֖יו אֲהֵב֑וּךָ וְעַתָּ֖ה הִתְחַתֵּ֥ן בַּמֶּֽלֶךְ

And Saul commanded his servants, , Commune with David secretly, and say, Behold, the king has delight in you, and all his servants love you: now therefore be the king's son in law.

וַֽיְדַבְּר֞וּ עַבְדֵ֤י שָׁאוּל֙ בְּאָזְנֵ֣י דָוִ֔ד אֶת הַדְּבָרִ֖ים הָאֵ֑לֶּה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר דָּוִ֗ד הַֽנְקַלָּ֤ה בְעֵֽינֵיכֶם֙ הִתְחַתֵּ֣ן בַּמֶּ֔לֶךְ וְאָנֹכִ֖י אִֽישׁ רָ֥שׁ וְנִקְלֶֽה

And Saul's servants spake those words in the ears of David. And David said, Seemeth it to you light to be a king's son in law, seeing that I a poor man, and lightly esteemed?

וַיַּגִּ֜דוּ עַבְדֵ֥י שָׁא֛וּל ל֖וֹ לֵאמֹ֑ר כַּדְּבָרִ֥ים הָאֵ֖לֶּה דִּבֶּ֥ר דָּוִֽד

And the servants of Saul told him, saying, On this manner spake David.

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר שָׁא֜וּל כֹּֽה תֹאמְר֣וּ לְדָוִ֗ד אֵֽין חֵ֤פֶץ לַמֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ בְּמֹ֔הַר כִּ֗י בְּמֵאָה֙ עָרְל֣וֹת פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים לְהִנָּקֵ֖ם בְּאֹיְבֵ֣י הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וְשָׁא֣וּל חָשַׁ֔ב לְהַפִּ֥יל אֶת דָּוִ֖ד בְּיַד פְּלִשְׁתִּֽים

And Saul said, Thus shall you say to David, The king desireth not any dowry, but an hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of the king's enemies. But Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.

וַיַּגִּ֨דוּ עֲבָדָ֤יו לְדָוִד֙ אֶת הַדְּבָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֔לֶּה וַיִּשַׁ֤ר הַדָּבָר֙ בְּעֵינֵ֣י דָוִ֔ד לְהִתְחַתֵּ֖ן בַּמֶּ֑לֶךְ וְלֹ֥א מָלְא֖וּ הַיָּמִֽים

And when his servants told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king's son in law: and the days were not expired.

וַיָּ֨קָם דָּוִ֜ד וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ ה֣וּא וַאֲנָשָׁ֗יו וַיַּ֣ךְ בַּפְּלִשְׁתִּים֮ מָאתַ֣יִם אִישׁ֒ וַיָּבֵ֤א דָוִד֙ אֶת עָרְלֹ֣תֵיהֶ֔ם וַיְמַלְא֣וּם לַמֶּ֔לֶךְ לְהִתְחַתֵּ֖ן בַּמֶּ֑לֶךְ וַיִּתֶּן ל֥וֹ שָׁא֛וּל אֶת מִיכַ֥ל בִּתּ֖וֹ לְאִשָּֽׁה

Wherefore David arose and went, he and his men, and slew of the Philistines two hundred men; and David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full tale to the king, that he might be the king's son in law. And Saul gave him Michal his daughter to wife.

וַיַּ֤רְא שָׁאוּל֙ וַיֵּ֔דַע כִּ֥י יְהוָ֖ה עִם דָּוִ֑ד וּמִיכַ֥ל בַּת שָׁא֖וּל אֲהֵבַֽתְהוּ

And Saul saw and knew that YHWH with David, and Michal Saul's daughter loved him.

וַיֹּ֣אסֶף שָׁא֗וּל לֵרֹ֛א מִפְּנֵ֥י דָוִ֖ד ע֑וֹד וַיְהִ֥י שָׁא֛וּל אֹיֵ֥ב אֶת דָּוִ֖ד כָּל הַיָּמִֽים

And Saul was yet the more afraid of David; and Saul became David's enemy continually.

וַיֵּצְא֖וּ שָׂרֵ֣י פְלִשְׁתִּ֑ים וַיְהִ֣י מִדֵּ֣י צֵאתָ֗ם שָׂכַ֤ל דָּוִד֙ מִכֹּל֙ עַבְדֵ֣י שָׁא֔וּל וַיִּיקַ֥ר שְׁמ֖וֹ מְאֹֽד

Then the princes of the Philistines went forth: and it came to pass, after they went forth, David behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was much set by.
