The First Book of Samuel, Chapter 15שמואל א 15

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר שְׁמוּאֵל֙ אֶל שָׁא֔וּל אֹתִ֨י שָׁלַ֤ח יְהוָה֙ לִמְשָׁחֳךָ֣ לְמֶ֔לֶךְ עַל עַמּ֖וֹ עַל יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְעַתָּ֣ה שְׁמַ֔ע לְק֖וֹל דִּבְרֵ֥י יְהוָֽה

Samuel also said to Saul, YHWH sent me to anoint you king over his people, over Israel: now therefore hearken you to the voice of the words of YHWH.

כֹּ֤ה אָמַר֙ יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת פָּקַ֕דְתִּי אֵ֛ת אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂ֥ה עֲמָלֵ֖ק לְיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל אֲשֶׁר שָׂ֥ם לוֹ֙ בַּדֶּ֔רֶךְ בַּעֲלֹת֖וֹ מִמִּצְרָֽיִם

Thus says YHWH of hosts, I remember which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt.

עַתָּה֩ לֵ֨ךְ וְהִכִּֽיתָ֜ה אֶת עֲמָלֵ֗ק וְהַֽחֲרַמְתֶּם֙ אֶת כָּל אֲשֶׁר ל֔וֹ וְלֹ֥א תַחְמֹ֖ל עָלָ֑יו וְהֵמַתָּ֞ה מֵאִ֣ישׁ עַד אִשָּׁ֗ה מֵֽעֹלֵל֙ וְעַד יוֹנֵ֔ק מִשּׁ֣וֹר וְעַד שֶׂ֔ה מִגָּמָ֖ל וְעַד חֲמֽוֹר

Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.

וַיְשַׁמַּ֤ע שָׁאוּל֙ אֶת הָעָ֔ם וַֽיִּפְקְדֵם֙ בַּטְּלָאִ֔ים מָאתַ֥יִם אֶ֖לֶף רַגְלִ֑י וַעֲשֶׂ֥רֶת אֲלָפִ֖ים אֶת אִ֥ישׁ יְהוּדָֽה

And Saul gathered the people together, and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Judah.

וַיָּבֹ֥א שָׁא֖וּל עַד עִ֣יר עֲמָלֵ֑ק וַיָּ֖רֶב בַּנָּֽחַל

And Saul came to a city of Amalek, and laid wait in the valley.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר שָׁא֣וּל אֶֽל הַקֵּינִ֡י לְכוּ֩ סֻּ֨רוּ רְד֜וּ מִתּ֣וֹךְ עֲמָלֵקִ֗י פֶּן אֹֽסִפְךָ֙ עִמּ֔וֹ וְאַתָּ֞ה עָשִׂ֤יתָה חֶ֨סֶד֙ עִם כָּל בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל בַּעֲלוֹתָ֖ם מִמִּצְרָ֑יִם וַיָּ֥סַר קֵינִ֖י מִתּ֥וֹךְ עֲמָלֵֽק

And Saul said to the Kenites, Go, depart, get you down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them: for you shewed kindness to all the children of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt. So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites.

וַיַּ֥ךְ שָׁא֖וּל אֶת עֲמָלֵ֑ק מֵֽחֲוִילָה֙ בּוֹאֲךָ֣ שׁ֔וּר אֲשֶׁ֖ר עַל פְּנֵ֥י מִצְרָֽיִם

And Saul smote the Amalekites from Havilah you comest to Shur, that over against Egypt.

וַיִּתְפֹּ֛שׂ אֶת אֲגַ֥ג מֶֽלֶךְ עֲמָלֵ֖ק חָ֑י וְאֶת כָּל הָעָ֖ם הֶחֱרִ֥ים לְפִי חָֽרֶב

And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.

וַיַּחְמֹל֩ שָׁא֨וּל וְהָעָ֜ם עַל אֲגָ֗ג וְעַל מֵיטַ֣ב הַצֹּאן֩ וְהַבָּקָ֨ר וְהַמִּשְׁנִ֤ים וְעַל הַכָּרִים֙ וְעַל כָּל הַטּ֔וֹב וְלֹ֥א אָב֖וּ הַחֲרִימָ֑ם וְכָל הַמְּלָאכָ֛ה נְמִבְזָ֥ה וְנָמֵ֖ס אֹתָ֥הּ הֶחֱרִֽימוּ

But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all good, and would not utterly destroy them: but every thing vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.

וַֽיְהִי֙ דְּבַר יְהוָ֔ה אֶל שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל לֵאמֹֽר

Then came the word of YHWH to Samuel, saying,

נִחַ֗מְתִּי כִּֽי הִמְלַ֤כְתִּי אֶת שָׁאוּל֙ לְמֶ֔לֶךְ כִּֽי שָׁב֙ מֵאַֽחֲרַ֔י וְאֶת דְּבָרַ֖י לֹ֣א הֵקִ֑ים וַיִּ֨חַר֙ לִשְׁמוּאֵ֔ל וַיִּזְעַ֥ק אֶל יְהוָ֖ה כָּל הַלָּֽיְלָה

It repenteth me that I have set up Saul king: for he is turned back from following me, and has not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried to YHWH all night.

וַיַּשְׁכֵּ֧ם שְׁמוּאֵ֛ל לִקְרַ֥את שָׁא֖וּל בַּבֹּ֑קֶר וַיֻּגַּ֨ד לִשְׁמוּאֵ֜ל לֵאמֹ֗ר בָּֽא שָׁא֤וּל הַכַּרְמֶ֨לָה֙ וְהִנֵּ֨ה מַצִּ֥יב לוֹ֙ יָ֔ד וַיִּסֹּב֙ וַֽיַּעֲבֹ֔ר וַיֵּ֖רֶד הַגִּלְגָּֽל

And when Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning, it was told Samuel, saying, Saul came to Carmel, and, behold, he set him up a place, and is gone about, and passed on, and gone down to Gilgal.

וַיָּבֹ֥א שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל אֶל שָׁא֑וּל וַיֹּ֧אמֶר ל֣וֹ שָׁא֗וּל בָּר֤וּךְ אַתָּה֙ לַֽיהוָ֔ה הֲקִימֹ֖תִי אֶת דְּבַ֥ר יְהוָֽה

And Samuel came to Saul: and Saul said to him, Blessed you of YHWH: I have performed the commandment of YHWH.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל וּמֶ֛ה קֽוֹל הַצֹּ֥אן הַזֶּ֖ה בְּאָזְנָ֑י וְק֣וֹל הַבָּקָ֔ר אֲשֶׁ֥ר אָנֹכִ֖י שֹׁמֵֽעַ

And Samuel said, What then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר שָׁא֜וּל מֵעֲמָלֵקִ֣י הֱבִיא֗וּם אֲשֶׁ֨ר חָמַ֤ל הָעָם֙ עַל מֵיטַ֤ב הַצֹּאן֙ וְהַבָּקָ֔ר לְמַ֥עַן זְבֹ֖חַ לַיהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ וְאֶת הַיּוֹתֵ֖ר הֶחֱרַֽמְנוּ

And Saul said, They have brought them from the Amalekites: for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice to YHWH your God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed.

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר שְׁמוּאֵל֙ אֶל שָׁא֔וּל הֶ֚רֶף וְאַגִּ֣ידָה לְּךָ֔ אֵת֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר דִּבֶּ֧ר יְהוָ֛ה אֵלַ֖י הַלָּ֑יְלָה ויאמרו וַיֹּ֥אמֶר ל֖וֹ דַּבֵּֽר

Then Samuel said to Saul, Stay, and I will tell you what YHWH has said to me this night. And he said to him, Say on.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל הֲל֗וֹא אִם קָטֹ֤ן אַתָּה֙ בְּעֵינֶ֔יךָ רֹ֛אשׁ שִׁבְטֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל אָ֑תָּה וַיִּמְשָׁחֲךָ֧ יְהוָ֛ה לְמֶ֖לֶךְ עַל יִשְׂרָאֵֽל

And Samuel said, When you little in your own sight, you not the head of the tribes of Israel, and YHWH anointed you king over Israel?

וַיִּשְׁלָחֲךָ֥ יְהוָ֖ה בְּדָ֑רֶךְ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר לֵ֣ךְ וְהַחֲרַמְתָּ֞ה אֶת הַֽחַטָּאִים֙ אֶת עֲמָלֵ֔ק וְנִלְחַמְתָּ֣ ב֔וֹ עַ֥ד כַּלּוֹתָ֖ם אֹתָֽם

And YHWH sent you on a journey, and said, Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they be consumed.

וְלָ֥מָּה לֹא שָׁמַ֖עְתָּ בְּק֣וֹל יְהוָ֑ה וַתַּ֨עַט֙ אֶל הַשָּׁלָ֔ל וַתַּ֥עַשׂ הָרַ֖ע בְּעֵינֵ֥י יְהוָֽה

Wherefore then didst you not obey the voice of YHWH, but didst fly upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight of YHWH?

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר שָׁא֜וּל אֶל שְׁמוּאֵ֗ל אֲשֶׁ֤ר שָׁמַ֨עְתִּי֙ בְּק֣וֹל יְהוָ֔ה וָאֵלֵ֕ךְ בַּדֶּ֖רֶךְ אֲשֶׁר שְׁלָחַ֣נִי יְהוָ֑ה וָאָבִ֗יא אֶת אֲגַג֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ עֲמָלֵ֔ק וְאֶת עֲמָלֵ֖ק הֶחֱרַֽמְתִּי

And Saul said to Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of YHWH, and have gone the way which YHWH sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.

וַיִּקַּ֨ח הָעָ֧ם מֵהַשָּׁלָ֛ל צֹ֥אן וּבָקָ֖ר רֵאשִׁ֣ית הַחֵ֑רֶם לִזְבֹּ֛חַ לַֽיהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ בַּגִּלְגָּֽל

But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice to YHWH your God in Gilgal.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר שְׁמוּאֵ֗ל הַחֵ֤פֶץ לַֽיהוָה֙ בְּעֹל֣וֹת וּזְבָחִ֔ים כִּשְׁמֹ֖עַ בְּק֣וֹל יְהוָ֑ה הִנֵּ֤ה שְׁמֹ֨עַ֙ מִזֶּ֣בַח ט֔וֹב לְהַקְשִׁ֖יב מֵחֵ֥לֶב אֵילִֽים

And Samuel said, Has YHWH delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of YHWH? Behold, to obey better than sacrifice, to hearken than the fat of rams.

כִּ֤י חַטַּאת קֶ֨סֶם֙ מֶ֔רִי וְאָ֥וֶן וּתְרָפִ֖ים הַפְצַ֑ר יַ֗עַן מָאַ֨סְתָּ֙ אֶת דְּבַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה וַיִּמְאָסְךָ֖ מִמֶּֽלֶךְ

For rebellion the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of YHWH, he has also rejected you from king.

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר שָׁא֤וּל אֶל שְׁמוּאֵל֙ חָטָ֔אתִי כִּֽי עָבַ֥רְתִּי אֶת פִּֽי יְהוָ֖ה וְאֶת דְּבָרֶ֑יךָ כִּ֤י יָרֵ֨אתִי֙ אֶת הָעָ֔ם וָאֶשְׁמַ֖ע בְּקוֹלָֽם

And Saul said to Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of YHWH, and your words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice.

וְעַתָּ֕ה שָׂ֥א נָ֖א אֶת חַטָּאתִ֑י וְשׁ֣וּב עִמִּ֔י וְאֶֽשְׁתַּחֲוֶ֖ה לַֽיהוָֽה

Now therefore, I pray you, pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship YHWH.

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר שְׁמוּאֵל֙ אֶל שָׁא֔וּל לֹ֥א אָשׁ֖וּב עִמָּ֑ךְ כִּ֤י מָאַ֨סְתָּה֙ אֶת דְּבַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה וַיִּמְאָסְךָ֣ יְהוָ֔ה מִהְי֥וֹת מֶ֖לֶךְ עַל יִשְׂרָאֵֽל

And Samuel said to Saul, I will not return with you: for you have rejected the word of YHWH, and YHWH has rejected you from being king over Israel.

וַיִּסֹּ֥ב שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל לָלֶ֑כֶת וַיַּחֲזֵ֥ק בִּכְנַף מְעִיל֖וֹ וַיִּקָּרַֽע

And as Samuel turned about to go away, he laid hold upon the skirt of his mantle, and it rent.

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלָיו֙ שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל קָרַ֨ע יְהוָ֜ה אֶֽת מַמְלְכ֧וּת יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל מֵעָלֶ֖יךָ הַיּ֑וֹם וּנְתָנָ֕הּ לְרֵעֲךָ֖ הַטּ֥וֹב מִמֶּֽךָּ

And Samuel said to him, YHWH has rent the kingdom of Israel from you this day, and has given it to a neighbour of your, better than you.

וְגַם֙ נֵ֣צַח יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לֹ֥א יְשַׁקֵּ֖ר וְלֹ֣א יִנָּחֵ֑ם כִּ֣י לֹ֥א אָדָ֛ם ה֖וּא לְהִנָּחֵֽם

And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent: for he not a man, that he should repent.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר חָטָ֔אתִי עַתָּ֗ה כַּבְּדֵ֥נִי נָ֛א נֶ֥גֶד זִקְנֵֽי עַמִּ֖י וְנֶ֣גֶד יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְשׁ֣וּב עִמִּ֔י וְהִֽשְׁתַּחֲוֵ֖יתִי לַֽיהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶֽיךָ

Then he said, I have sinned: honour me now, I pray you, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn again with me, that I may worship YHWH your God.

וַיָּ֥שָׁב שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל אַחֲרֵ֣י שָׁא֑וּל וַיִּשְׁתַּ֥חוּ שָׁא֖וּל לַֽיהוָֽה

So Samuel turned again after Saul; and Saul worshipped YHWH.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר שְׁמוּאֵ֗ל הַגִּ֤ישׁוּ אֵלַי֙ אֶת אֲגַג֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ עֲמָלֵ֔ק וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ אֵלָ֔יו אֲגַ֖ג מַעֲדַנֹּ֑ת וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲגָ֔ג אָכֵ֖ן סָ֥ר מַר הַמָּֽוֶת

Then said Samuel, Bring you hither to me Agag the king of the Amalekites. And Agag came to him delicately. And Agag said, Surely the bitterness of death is past.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר שִׁכְּלָ֤ה נָשִׁים֙ חַרְבֶּ֔ךָ כֵּן תִּשְׁכַּ֥ל מִנָּשִׁ֖ים אִמֶּ֑ךָ וַיְשַׁסֵּ֨ף שְׁמוּאֵ֧ל אֶת אֲגָ֛ג לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָ֖ה בַּגִּלְגָּֽל

And Samuel said, As your sword has made women childless, so shall your mother be childless among women. And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before YHWH in Gilgal.

וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל הָרָמָ֑תָה וְשָׁא֛וּל עָלָ֥ה אֶל בֵּית֖וֹ גִּבְעַ֥ת שָׁאֽוּל

Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul.

וְלֹא יָסַ֨ף שְׁמוּאֵ֜ל לִרְא֤וֹת אֶת שָׁאוּל֙ עַד י֣וֹם מוֹת֔וֹ כִּֽי הִתְאַבֵּ֥ל שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל אֶל שָׁא֑וּל וַיהוָ֣ה נִחָ֔ם כִּֽי הִמְלִ֥יךְ אֶת שָׁא֖וּל עַל יִשְׂרָאֵֽל

And Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death: nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul: and YHWH repented that he had made Saul king over Israel.
