The Book of Numbers, Chapter 9במדבר 9

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Israel keeps the Passover at Sinai at its appointed time; for those unclean by a corpse or away on a journey a second Passover is granted a month later, one law for native and sojourner alike. Then the cloud settles over the tabernacle, fire by night, and by it Israel journeys and rests — setting out and encamping always 'at the command of YHWH.'

Translation & textual notes

Numbers 9 is textually stable in the MT, but its two panels raise classic historical-critical and exegetical questions. Vv. 1-14 date the Passover instruction to the second year, first month (v. 1) — chronologically earlier than the census of 1:1 (second year, second month) — a chronological displacement long taken as evidence of independent source blocks arranged topically rather than sequentially; the LXX and SP show no substantive divergence here. The Second Passover unit (vv. 6-14) is a paradigm case of casuistic law generated by narrative precedent (cf. the daughters of Zelophehad in ch. 27, the blasphemer in Lev 24): an unresolved case is brought to Moses, who suspends judgment pending direct oracle (v. 8), and the resulting ruling both accommodates genuine incapacity (corpse-impurity, distant travel) and, via the כָּרֵת formula of v. 13, excludes willful neglect from any such accommodation — rabbinic tradition later systematized this as Pesach Sheni. The relationship of רְחֹקָה 'distant' (v. 10) to later halakhic mileage-thresholds is a post-biblical development, not addressed by the text itself; the MT's own concern is incapacity, not a fixed distance. Vv. 15-23 form a self-contained unit on the guiding cloud, widely recognized as a recapitulation and theological elaboration of Exod 40:34-38 rather than a new datum, and its extraordinarily repetitive style — עַל פִּי יְהוָה occurs seven times in eight verses (18-23), and נָסַע/חָנָה alternate relentlessly — is deliberate rhetorical device, not redundancy: the prose enacts the very repetitiveness of the phenomenon it describes. The chapter contains no significant textual variants affecting sense; the one curious orthographic feature is the extra-large letter or unusual pointing traditionally noted at רְחֹקָה (v. 10) in some MT traditions, treated by the Masorah as a scribal peculiarity rather than a textual problem. Versification follows the MT throughout.

Narrative wayyiqtol opening a new divine-speech unitוַ
The chapter opens with the standard prophetic-word formula, dated precisely: the second year, first month — a full month before the muster of ch. 1 (second year, second month) but chronologically the earliest event in the book, signaling that Numbers' opening census is not strictly sequential with this Passover instruction.

And those men said to him, 'We are unclean by the corpse of a person; why should we be kept back from bringing the offering of YHWH at its appointed time among the sons of Israel?'

Wayyiqtol introducing direct speech — the men's petitionוַ
The men's rhetorical question (לָמָּה נִגָּרַע, a Niphal 'why should we be diminished/withheld') presses a genuine legal gap: they did nothing wrong (corpse-uncleanness from proper burial duty is itself commanded, cf. Num 19), yet stand to lose covenant participation — the case that provokes Moses to seek a fresh oracle rather than rule unilaterally.

New topic — the cloud over the tabernacle (asyndetic shift from law to theophany)וְ
The chapter pivots from Passover casuistry to the cloud that has covered the tabernacle since its erection (cf. Exod 40:34-38, to which this is a direct sequel); day appearance and night appearance (fire) are distinguished, establishing the visual sign that will govern Israel's marches in vv. 17-23.

The verse states the controlling principle that vv. 18-23 will elaborate from every angle: Israel's entire itinerary is dictated not by human planning but by the cloud's movement — repeated key terms (וְאַחֲרֵי כֵן, שָׁם) frame journey and rest as strictly correlative to it.

Theological restatement of v. 17 — the cloud's movement IS the mouth/command of YHWHasyndeton
This is the refrain-verse: עַל פִּי יְהוָה ('at the mouth/command of YHWH'), repeated twice here and again in vv. 20 and 23, reinterprets the cloud's physical movement as YHWH's direct utterance — visual sign and verbal command collapse into one another.
