The Book of Numbers, Chapter 8במדבר 8

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The seven lamps of the golden lampstand are set to give light, and the Levites are purified and presented as a wave offering before YHWH: sprinkled, shaved, and washed, given wholly to Aaron in place of Israel's firstborn to serve the tent and make atonement for the people — serving from the age of twenty-five and retiring from the labor at fifty.

Translation & textual notes

Numbers 8 is textually stable in the MT, with the Samaritan Pentateuch and LXX (Vulg. Numeri) agreeing closely in substance, though the LXX renders תְּנוּפָה and מִשְׁמֶרֶת with its own technical vocabulary (aphorisma, phylake) that later shaped Christian liturgical language. The chapter's most discussed crux is not textual but legal-exegetical: v. 24 sets the Levites' minimum age of service at twenty-five, while Num 4:3, 23, 30, 35, 39, 43, 47 (the census of Levitical labor-clans for transporting the tabernacle) fixes it at thirty. Talmudic and later Jewish exegesis (b. Hullin 24a) harmonized the two by positing a five-year apprenticeship (25-30) before full service, while critical scholarship generally treats the two figures as belonging to distinct source-strata or reflecting different kinds of duty (training/lighter service from 25 vs. the heavy transport-labor of ch. 4 from 30); 1 Chron 23:24, 27 later lowers the threshold again to twenty, reflecting a settled sanctuary's reduced physical demands once the tabernacle no longer had to be dismantled and carried. The chapter also preserves two ritual peculiarities worth flagging: the Levites themselves, not an animal portion, are the object of the תְּנוּפָה-gesture (vv. 11, 13, 15, 21), and the doubled participle נְתֻנִים נְתֻנִים (v. 16) is a rare intensifying repetition unparalleled elsewhere in the Pentateuch for emphasis on total, irrevocable transfer. Versification follows the MT throughout.

The recurring formula 'and YHWH spoke to Moses, saying' marks a fresh divine speech; it recurs at the head of vv. 5 and 23, dividing the chapter into three legislative units (lampstand, Levites' consecration, Levites' term of service).

Direct divine command to Moses, to be relayed to Aaronasyndeton
The command shifts from narration (v. 1) to direct imperative speech; the syntax fronts a temporal infinitive (בְּהַעֲלֹתְךָ, 'when you set up') before the main clause, making the priest's act of lighting the circumstance under which the seven lamps illuminate the space before the lampstand.

Ground clause explaining the rationale for the Levites' separation (vv. 14-15)for
The chapter's key theological warrant: the doubled passive participle נְתֻנִים נְתֻנִים ('utterly given') and the first-person לָקַחְתִּי ('I have taken') ground the Levites' status in the firstborn-redemption transaction of Exod 13 and Num 3:11-13 — every Israelite firstborn belongs to YHWH by right of the Passover, and the Levites are taken as their substitute.

Further ground: recalls the Exodus firstborn-claim underlying the Levite substitutionfor
Vv. 16-17 together supply the historical basis for vv. 14-15 and 18: YHWH's claim on Israel's firstborn (both human and animal) dates to the night he struck Egypt's firstborn and 'sanctified' Israel's own as his; the Levites' substitution (v. 18) discharges this standing claim en masse rather than requiring every family to redeem its own firstborn son individually.

Summary of purpose closing the whole Levite-consecration unit (vv. 5-19)and
The longest verse of the chapter recapitulates the entire unit's purpose in a cascading series of infinitival clauses (to serve, to atone) and a climactic negative-purpose clause: the Levites exist precisely so that ordinary Israelites never approach the sanctuary directly and incur נֶגֶף — the same danger dramatized narratively in Num 16-17.
