The Book of Numbers, Chapter 34במדבר 34

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The land is not a vague promise but a surveyed inheritance: four fixed borders — south, west, north, east — ring Canaan like a legal deed, while Eleazar, Joshua, and ten tribal chiefs, Caleb first among them, are named to divide it. Boundary and steward alike answer to the same repeated command: יְהוָה צִוָּה, 'YHWH has commanded.'

Translation & textual notes

The consonantal text of Numbers 34 is well preserved, but v. 4 keeps a genuine crux: an unpointed והיה stands immediately before the fully pointed וְהָיוּ, almost certainly an uncorrected scribal dittography rather than two clauses — the Masoretes pointed only the second form, leaving the first as an orthographic relic. The chapter's boundary description is also an ideal, not a historical, extent. The northern line (vv. 7-9) — Mount Hor (distinct from Aaron's, 20:22-29), Lebo-hamath, Zedad, Ziphron, Hazar-enan — reaches well beyond any frontier Israel ever actually controlled; the same line, using this chapter's own rare surveying verb תָּאָה 'mark out', reappears almost verbatim in Ezekiel's eschatological land-grant (Ezek 47:15-20; 48:1), suggesting both texts draw on one traditional description of Canaan's fullest theoretical bounds. לְבֹא חֲמָת (v. 8) divides interpreters between 'the entrance of Hamath' and the fixed toponym Lebo-hamath. Several sites (Ziphron, Shepham, Ain, Azmon) are otherwise unattested and cannot be located with confidence. The chapter's two halves — geography (vv. 2-12) and personnel (vv. 13-29) — are each closed by their own inclusio, and the whole is bracketed by three occurrences of צִוָּה (vv. 2, 13, 29), binding both the land's shape and its distributors to a single divine command.

תָּאָה 'to mark out' is a rare, technical surveying verb (only here, v. 8, and Ezek 47:20) — briefly Israel itself is cast as surveyor. This 'Mount Hor' is very likely a different peak from Aaron's Mount Hor near Edom (20:22-29; 33:37-39); its northern location (toward Lebo-hamath) has long puzzled geographers.
