The Book of Numbers, Chapter 33במדבר 33

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Forty-two stations trace Israel from Rameses' high-handed exodus to the plains of Moab, Moses' own written record (v. 2) framing the wandering as ordered history, not aimless drift. Only two pauses interrupt the relentless departure-encampment formula: Egypt's plague-struck burial of its firstborn, and Aaron's dated death atop Hor. The list closes not in nostalgia but in command: dispossess, destroy every idol and high place, divide the land by lot -- or the nations spared become barbs in Israel's own eyes.

Translation & textual notes

The MT of Num. 33 is textually stable overall, but the forty-two station names generate the chapter's real cruxes: several toponyms occur only here (e.g. Dophkah, Alush, Rithmah, Kehelathah, Mount Shepher, Makheloth, Tahath, Terah, Mithkah, Almon-diblathaim), unattested elsewhere in the Hebrew Bible or in extrabiblical sources, so their locations are largely unrecoverable and their spellings occasionally vary slightly against parallel notices in Exodus and Numbers 20-21 (e.g. Rissah, Hor-haggidgad vs. Gudgodah in Deut. 10:7). The list also compresses or reorders some stages relative to the earlier narrative (the Sinai sojourn of nearly a year, e.g., is passed over in a single verse, vv. 15-16), reflecting its genre as a summarizing administrative record rather than a narrative retelling. LXX and SP agree closely with MT's station sequence, with only minor orthographic variation in personal/place names. The chapter's two narrative insets -- the Passover-departure notice (vv. 3-4) and Aaron's dated death on Hor (vv. 38-39) -- are widely regarded as original to P's itinerary source, the latter supplying the Torah's only precisely dated death notice.
