The Book of Numbers, Chapter 31במדבר 31

וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה אֶל מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר

YHWH spoke to Moses, saying,

נְקֹ֗ם נִקְמַת֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל מֵאֵ֖ת הַמִּדְיָנִ֑ים אַחַ֖ר תֵּאָסֵ֥ף אֶל עַמֶּֽיךָ

"Execute the vengeance of the Israelites on the Midianites; afterward you will be gathered to your people."

וַיְדַבֵּ֤ר מֹשֶׁה֙ אֶל הָעָ֣ם לֵאמֹ֔ר הֵחָלְצ֧וּ מֵאִתְּכֶ֛ם אֲנָשִׁ֖ים לַצָּבָ֑א וְיִהְיוּ֙ עַל מִדְיָ֔ן לָתֵ֥ת נִקְמַת יְהוָ֖ה בְּמִדְיָֽן

So Moses spoke to the people, saying, "Arm men from among you for the war, that they may go against Midian, to execute YHWH's vengeance on Midian."

אֶ֚לֶף לַמַּטֶּ֔ה אֶ֖לֶף לַמַּטֶּ֑ה לְכֹל֙ מַטּ֣וֹת יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל תִּשְׁלְח֖וּ לַצָּבָֽא

A thousand from each tribe, a thousand from each tribe of all the tribes of Israel, you shall send to the war.

וַיִּמָּֽסְרוּ֙ מֵאַלְפֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֶ֖לֶף לַמַּטֶּ֑ה שְׁנֵים עָשָׂ֥ר אֶ֖לֶף חֲלוּצֵ֥י צָבָֽא

So there were furnished from the thousands of Israel a thousand per tribe, twelve thousand armed for war.

וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח אֹתָ֥ם מֹשֶׁ֛ה אֶ֥לֶף לַמַּטֶּ֖ה לַצָּבָ֑א אֹ֠תָם וְאֶת פִּ֨ינְחָ֜ס בֶּן אֶלְעָזָ֤ר הַכֹּהֵן֙ לַצָּבָ֔א וּכְלֵ֥י הַקֹּ֛דֶשׁ וַחֲצֹצְר֥וֹת הַתְּרוּעָ֖ה בְּיָדֽוֹ

And Moses sent them, a thousand from each tribe, to the war — them and Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest, to the war, with the holy vessels and the signal trumpets in his hand.

וַֽיִּצְבְּאוּ֙ עַל מִדְיָ֔ן כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה יְהוָ֖ה אֶת מֹשֶׁ֑ה וַיַּֽהַרְג֖וּ כָּל זָכָֽר

They waged war against Midian, as YHWH had commanded Moses, and they killed every male.

וְאֶת מַלְכֵ֨י מִדְיָ֜ן הָרְג֣וּ עַל חַלְלֵיהֶ֗ם אֶת אֱוִ֤י וְאֶת רֶ֨קֶם֙ וְאֶת צ֤וּר וְאֶת חוּר֙ וְאֶת רֶ֔בַע חֲמֵ֖שֶׁת מַלְכֵ֣י מִדְיָ֑ן וְאֵת֙ בִּלְעָ֣ם בֶּן בְּע֔וֹר הָרְג֖וּ בֶּחָֽרֶב

They also killed the kings of Midian along with the rest of their slain: Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba — the five kings of Midian; and Balaam son of Beor they killed with the sword.

וַיִּשְׁבּ֧וּ בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל אֶת נְשֵׁ֥י מִדְיָ֖ן וְאֶת טַפָּ֑ם וְאֵ֨ת כָּל בְּהֶמְתָּ֧ם וְאֶת כָּל מִקְנֵהֶ֛ם וְאֶת כָּל חֵילָ֖ם בָּזָֽזוּ

And the sons of Israel took captive the women of Midian and their little ones, and all their cattle, all their livestock, and all their wealth they plundered.

וְאֵ֤ת כָּל עָרֵיהֶם֙ בְּמ֣וֹשְׁבֹתָ֔ם וְאֵ֖ת כָּל טִֽירֹתָ֑ם שָׂרְפ֖וּ בָּאֵֽשׁ

And all their cities where they lived, and all their encampments, they burned with fire.

וַיִּקְחוּ֙ אֶת כָּל הַשָּׁלָ֔ל וְאֵ֖ת כָּל הַמַּלְק֑וֹחַ בָּאָדָ֖ם וּבַבְּהֵמָֽה

And they took all the spoil and all the booty, both of man and of beast.

וַיָּבִ֡אוּ אֶל מֹשֶׁה֩ וְאֶל אֶלְעָזָ֨ר הַכֹּהֵ֜ן וְאֶל עֲדַ֣ת בְּנֵֽי יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל אֶת הַשְּׁבִ֧י וְאֶת הַמַּלְק֛וֹחַ וְאֶת הַשָּׁלָ֖ל אֶל הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֑ה אֶל עַֽרְבֹ֣ת מוֹאָ֔ב אֲשֶׁ֖ר עַל יַרְדֵּ֥ן יְרֵחֽוֹ

And they brought to Moses and Eleazar the priest, and to the congregation of the sons of Israel, the captives and the booty and the spoil, to the camp in the plains of Moab which are by the Jordan at Jericho.

וַיֵּ֨צְא֜וּ מֹשֶׁ֨ה וְאֶלְעָזָ֧ר הַכֹּהֵ֛ן וְכָל נְשִׂיאֵ֥י הָעֵדָ֖ה לִקְרָאתָ֑ם אֶל מִח֖וּץ לַֽמַּחֲנֶֽה

And Moses and Eleazar the priest and all the leaders of the congregation went out to meet them outside the camp.

וַיִּקְצֹ֣ף מֹשֶׁ֔ה עַ֖ל פְּקוּדֵ֣י הֶחָ֑יִל שָׂרֵ֤י הָאֲלָפִים֙ וְשָׂרֵ֣י הַמֵּא֔וֹת הַבָּאִ֖ים מִצְּבָ֥א הַמִּלְחָמָֽה

And Moses was angry with the officers of the army, the commanders of thousands and the commanders of hundreds, who came from the service of the war.

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶ֖ם מֹשֶׁ֑ה הַֽחִיִּיתֶ֖ם כָּל נְקֵבָֽה

And Moses said to them, "Have you let all the females live?"

הֵ֣ן הֵ֜נָּה הָי֨וּ לִבְנֵ֤י יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ בִּדְבַ֣ר בִּלְעָ֔ם לִמְסָר מַ֥עַל בַּיהוָ֖ה עַל דְּבַר פְּע֑וֹר וַתְּהִ֥י הַמַּגֵּפָ֖ה בַּעֲדַ֥ת יְהוָֽה

"Behold, these women, through the counsel of Balaam, caused the sons of Israel to trespass against YHWH in the matter of Peor, so that the plague came upon the congregation of YHWH."

וְעַתָּ֕ה הִרְג֥וּ כָל זָכָ֖ר בַּטָּ֑ף וְכָל אִשָּׁ֗ה יֹדַ֥עַת אִ֛ישׁ לְמִשְׁכַּ֥ב זָכָ֖ר הֲרֹֽגוּ

Now therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known a man by lying with him.

וְכֹל֙ הַטַּ֣ף בַּנָּשִׁ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹא יָדְע֖וּ מִשְׁכַּ֣ב זָכָ֑ר הַחֲי֖וּ לָכֶֽם

But all the young girls who have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.

וְאַתֶּ֗ם חֲנ֛וּ מִח֥וּץ לַֽמַּחֲנֶ֖ה שִׁבְעַ֣ת יָמִ֑ים כֹּל֩ הֹרֵ֨ג נֶ֜פֶשׁ וְכֹ֣ל נֹגֵ֣עַ בֶּֽחָלָ֗ל תִּֽתְחַטְּא֞וּ בַּיּ֤וֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁי֙ וּבַיּ֣וֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔י אַתֶּ֖ם וּשְׁבִיכֶֽם

And as for you, camp outside the camp seven days; whoever has killed a person, and whoever has touched a slain one, purify yourselves on the third day and on the seventh day, you and your captives.

וְכָל בֶּ֧גֶד וְכָל כְּלִי ע֛וֹר וְכָל מַעֲשֵׂ֥ה עִזִּ֖ים וְכָל כְּלִי עֵ֑ץ תִּתְחַטָּֽאוּ

And every garment, and every article of leather, and every product of goat hair, and every article of wood, you shall purify.

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֶלְעָזָ֤ר הַכֹּהֵן֙ אֶל אַנְשֵׁ֣י הַצָּבָ֔א הַבָּאִ֖ים לַמִּלְחָמָ֑ה זֹ֚את חֻקַּ֣ת הַתּוֹרָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר צִוָּ֥ה יְהוָ֖ה אֶת מֹשֶֽׁה

And Eleazar the priest said to the men of war who had gone to the battle, "This is the statute of the law which YHWH has commanded Moses:"

אַ֥ךְ אֶת הַזָּהָ֖ב וְאֶת הַכָּ֑סֶף אֶֽת הַנְּחֹ֨שֶׁת֙ אֶת הַבַּרְזֶ֔ל אֶֽת הַבְּדִ֖יל וְאֶת הָעֹפָֽרֶת

Only the gold, the silver, the bronze, the iron, the tin, and the lead —

כָּל דָּבָ֞ר אֲשֶׁר יָבֹ֣א בָאֵ֗שׁ תַּעֲבִ֤ירוּ בָאֵשׁ֙ וְטָהֵ֔ר אַ֕ךְ בְּמֵ֥י נִדָּ֖ה יִתְחַטָּ֑א וְכֹ֨ל אֲשֶׁ֧ר לֹֽא יָבֹ֛א בָּאֵ֖שׁ תַּעֲבִ֥ירוּ בַמָּֽיִם

Every article that can withstand fire, you shall pass through the fire, and it shall be clean; nevertheless it shall also be purified with the water of impurity. But all that cannot withstand fire you shall pass through the water.

וְכִבַּסְתֶּ֧ם בִּגְדֵיכֶ֛ם בַּיּ֥וֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִ֖י וּטְהַרְתֶּ֑ם וְאַחַ֖ר תָּבֹ֥אוּ אֶל הַֽמַּחֲנֶֽה

And you shall wash your clothes on the seventh day and be clean, and afterward you may come into the camp.

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר יְהוָ֖ה אֶל מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר

And YHWH spoke to Moses, saying,

שָׂ֗א אֵ֣ת רֹ֤אשׁ מַלְק֨וֹחַ֙ הַשְּׁבִ֔י בָּאָדָ֖ם וּבַבְּהֵמָ֑ה אַתָּה֙ וְאֶלְעָזָ֣ר הַכֹּהֵ֔ן וְרָאשֵׁ֖י אֲב֥וֹת הָעֵדָֽה

Take the count of the plunder that was taken, of man and of beast, you and Eleazar the priest and the heads of the fathers' houses of the congregation,

וְחָצִ֨יתָ֙ אֶת הַמַּלְק֔וֹחַ בֵּ֚ין תֹּפְשֵׂ֣י הַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה הַיֹּצְאִ֖ים לַצָּבָ֑א וּבֵ֖ין כָּל הָעֵדָֽה

And divide the plunder between the warriors who went out to battle and all the congregation.

וַהֲרֵמֹתָ֨ מֶ֜כֶס לַֽיהוָ֗ה מֵאֵ֞ת אַנְשֵׁ֤י הַמִּלְחָמָה֙ הַיֹּצְאִ֣ים לַצָּבָ֔א אֶחָ֣ד נֶ֔פֶשׁ מֵחֲמֵ֖שׁ הַמֵּא֑וֹת מִן הָאָדָם֙ וּמִן הַבָּקָ֔ר וּמִן הַחֲמֹרִ֖ים וּמִן הַצֹּֽאן

And levy a tribute for YHWH from the men of war who went out to battle: one soul out of every five hundred, from the persons, the cattle, the donkeys, and the flocks.

מִמַּֽחֲצִיתָ֖ם תִּקָּ֑חוּ וְנָתַתָּ֛ה לְאֶלְעָזָ֥ר הַכֹּהֵ֖ן תְּרוּמַ֥ת יְהוָֽה

From their half you shall take it, and give it to Eleazar the priest as a contribution to YHWH.

וּמִמַּחֲצִ֨ת בְּנֵֽי יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל תִּקַּ֣ח אֶחָ֣ד אָחֻ֣ז מִן הַחֲמִשִּׁ֗ים מִן הָאָדָ֧ם מִן הַבָּקָ֛ר מִן הַחֲמֹרִ֥ים וּמִן הַצֹּ֖אן מִכָּל הַבְּהֵמָ֑ה וְנָתַתָּ֤ה אֹתָם֙ לַלְוִיִּ֔ם שֹׁמְרֵ֕י מִשְׁמֶ֖רֶת מִשְׁכַּ֥ן יְהוָֽה

And from the Israelites' half you shall take one drawn out of every fifty, from the persons, from the cattle, from the donkeys, and from the flock, from all the livestock, and give them to the Levites who keep charge of YHWH's tabernacle.

וַיַּ֣עַשׂ מֹשֶׁ֔ה וְאֶלְעָזָ֖ר הַכֹּהֵ֑ן כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה יְהוָ֖ה אֶת מֹשֶֽׁה

And Moses and Eleazar the priest did as YHWH had commanded Moses.

וַיְהִי֙ הַמַּלְק֔וֹחַ יֶ֣תֶר הַבָּ֔ז אֲשֶׁ֥ר בָּזְז֖וּ עַ֣ם הַצָּבָ֑א צֹ֗אן שֵׁשׁ מֵא֥וֹת אֶ֛לֶף וְשִׁבְעִ֥ים אֶ֖לֶף וַחֲמֵֽשֶׁת אֲלָפִֽים

And the plunder, the remainder of the spoil that the army had plundered, was: sheep — six hundred seventy-five thousand;

וּבָקָ֕ר שְׁנַ֥יִם וְשִׁבְעִ֖ים אָֽלֶף

And cattle — seventy-two thousand;

וַחֲמֹרִ֕ים אֶחָ֥ד וְשִׁשִּׁ֖ים אָֽלֶף

And donkeys — sixty-one thousand;

וְנֶ֣פֶשׁ אָדָ֔ם מִן הַ֨נָּשִׁ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹֽא יָדְע֖וּ מִשְׁכַּ֣ב זָכָ֑ר כָּל נֶ֕פֶשׁ שְׁנַ֥יִם וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֖ים אָֽלֶף

And human persons, of the women who had not known a man by lying with him, all the persons — thirty-two thousand.

וַתְּהִי֙ הַֽמֶּחֱצָ֔ה חֵ֕לֶק הַיֹּצְאִ֖ים בַּצָּבָ֑א מִסְפַּ֣ר הַצֹּ֗אן שְׁלֹשׁ מֵא֥וֹת אֶ֨לֶף֙ וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים אֶ֔לֶף וְשִׁבְעַ֥ת אֲלָפִ֖ים וַחֲמֵ֥שׁ מֵאֽוֹת

And the half-portion of those who went out to war was: the number of the flock — three hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred.

וַיְהִ֛י הַמֶּ֥כֶס לַֽיהוָ֖ה מִן הַצֹּ֑אן שֵׁ֥שׁ מֵא֖וֹת חָמֵ֥שׁ וְשִׁבְעִֽים

And the tribute for YHWH from the flock was six hundred seventy-five.

וְהַ֨בָּקָ֔ר שִׁשָּׁ֥ה וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֖ים אָ֑לֶף וּמִכְסָ֥ם לַיהוָ֖ה שְׁנַ֥יִם וְשִׁבְעִֽים

And the cattle were thirty-six thousand, and their tribute for YHWH was seventy-two.

וַחֲמֹרִ֕ים שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים אֶ֖לֶף וַחֲמֵ֣שׁ מֵא֑וֹת וּמִכְסָ֥ם לַֽיהוָ֖ה אֶחָ֥ד וְשִׁשִּֽׁים

And donkeys were thirty thousand five hundred, and their tribute for YHWH was sixty-one.

וְנֶ֣פֶשׁ אָדָ֔ם שִׁשָּׁ֥ה עָשָׂ֖ר אָ֑לֶף וּמִכְסָם֙ לַֽיהוָ֔ה שְׁנַ֥יִם וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֖ים נָֽפֶשׁ

And human persons were sixteen thousand, and their tribute for YHWH was thirty-two persons.

וַיִּתֵּ֣ן מֹשֶׁ֗ה אֶת מֶ֨כֶס֙ תְּרוּמַ֣ת יְהוָ֔ה לְאֶלְעָזָ֖ר הַכֹּהֵ֑ן כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה יְהוָ֖ה אֶת מֹשֶֽׁה

And Moses gave the tribute, the contribution of YHWH, to Eleazar the priest, as YHWH had commanded Moses.

וּמִֽמַּחֲצִ֖ית בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל אֲשֶׁר֙ חָצָ֣ה מֹשֶׁ֔ה מִן הָאֲנָשִׁ֖ים הַצֹּבְאִֽים

And from the half of the Israelites, which Moses had divided off from the men who had gone to war —

וַתְּהִ֛י מֶחֱצַ֥ת הָעֵדָ֖ה מִן הַצֹּ֑אן שְׁלֹשׁ מֵא֥וֹת אֶ֨לֶף֙ וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים אֶ֔לֶף שִׁבְעַ֥ת אֲלָפִ֖ים וַחֲמֵ֥שׁ מֵאֽוֹת

the congregation's half was, of the flock, three hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred;

וּבָקָ֕ר שִׁשָּׁ֥ה וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֖ים אָֽלֶף

And cattle, thirty-six thousand;

וַחֲמֹרִ֕ים שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים אֶ֖לֶף וַחֲמֵ֥שׁ מֵאֽוֹת

And donkeys, thirty thousand five hundred;

וְנֶ֣פֶשׁ אָדָ֔ם שִׁשָּׁ֥ה עָשָׂ֖ר אָֽלֶף

And human persons, sixteen thousand —

וַיִּקַּ֨ח מֹשֶׁ֜ה מִמַּחֲצִ֣ת בְּנֵֽי יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל אֶת הָֽאָחֻז֙ אֶחָ֣ד מִן הַחֲמִשִּׁ֔ים מִן הָאָדָ֖ם וּמִן הַבְּהֵמָ֑ה וַיִּתֵּ֨ן אֹתָ֜ם לַלְוִיִּ֗ם שֹֽׁמְרֵי֙ מִשְׁמֶ֨רֶת֙ מִשְׁכַּ֣ן יְהוָ֔ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה יְהוָ֖ה אֶת מֹשֶֽׁה

And Moses took, from the Israelites' half, the one drawn out of every fifty, of persons and of livestock, and gave them to the Levites who keep charge of YHWH's tabernacle, as YHWH had commanded Moses.

וַֽיִּקְרְבוּ֙ אֶל מֹשֶׁ֔ה הַפְּקֻדִ֕ים אֲשֶׁ֖ר לְאַלְפֵ֣י הַצָּבָ֑א שָׂרֵ֥י הָאֲלָפִ֖ים וְשָׂרֵ֥י הַמֵּאֽוֹת

Then the officers who were over the thousands of the army approached Moses — the commanders of thousands and the commanders of hundreds —

וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ אֶל מֹשֶׁ֔ה עֲבָדֶ֣יךָ נָֽשְׂא֗וּ אֶת רֹ֛אשׁ אַנְשֵׁ֥י הַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּיָדֵ֑נוּ וְלֹא נִפְקַ֥ד מִמֶּ֖נּוּ אִֽישׁ

and they said to Moses, "Your servants have counted the men of war who are under our command, and not one man of us is missing."

וַנַּקְרֵ֞ב אֶת קָרְבַּ֣ן יְהוָ֗ה אִישׁ֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר מָצָ֤א כְלִֽי זָהָב֙ אֶצְעָדָ֣ה וְצָמִ֔יד טַבַּ֖עַת עָגִ֣יל וְכוּמָ֑ז לְכַפֵּ֥ר עַל נַפְשֹׁתֵ֖ינוּ לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָֽה

So we have brought an offering to YHWH, each man what he found — articles of gold: armlets, bracelets, signet rings, earrings, and pendants — to make atonement for our lives before YHWH.

וַיִּקַּ֨ח מֹשֶׁ֜ה וְאֶלְעָזָ֧ר הַכֹּהֵ֛ן אֶת הַזָּהָ֖ב מֵֽאִתָּ֑ם כֹּ֖ל כְּלִ֥י מַעֲשֶֽׂה

And Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from them, all the crafted articles.

וַיְהִ֣י כָּל זְהַ֣ב הַתְּרוּמָ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֤ר הֵרִ֨ימוּ֙ לַֽיהוָ֔ה שִׁשָּׁ֨ה עָשָׂ֥ר אֶ֛לֶף שְׁבַע מֵא֥וֹת וַחֲמִשִּׁ֖ים שָׁ֑קֶל מֵאֵת֙ שָׂרֵ֣י הָֽאֲלָפִ֔ים וּמֵאֵ֖ת שָׂרֵ֥י הַמֵּאֽוֹת

And all the gold of the contribution that they offered to YHWH was sixteen thousand seven hundred fifty shekels, from the commanders of thousands and from the commanders of hundreds.

אַנְשֵׁי֙ הַצָּבָ֔א בָּזְז֖וּ אִ֥ישׁ לֽוֹ

(The men of the army had taken plunder, each man for himself.)

וַיִּקַּ֨ח מֹשֶׁ֜ה וְאֶלְעָזָ֤ר הַכֹּהֵן֙ אֶת הַזָּהָ֔ב מֵאֵ֛ת שָׂרֵ֥י הָאֲלָפִ֖ים וְהַמֵּא֑וֹת וַיָּבִ֤אוּ אֹתוֹ֙ אֶל אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֔ד זִכָּר֥וֹן לִבְנֵֽי יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָֽה

And Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it into the tent of meeting, a memorial for the Israelites before YHWH.
