The Book of Numbers, Chapter 30במדבר 30

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Numbers 30 legislates the vow (נֶדֶר) and the rarer 'binding obligation' (אִסָּר): a man's spoken word binds him absolutely. A woman's vow — daughter, bride, wife, or the exceptional widow/divorcée — stands or falls on her father's or husband's same-day response: silence confirms it, but annulment after that day shifts her guilt onto him.

Translation & textual notes

Numbers 30 is a Priestly legal unit and is textually stable in the MT, with no significant variants among the major witnesses (SP, LXX, 4Q Torah fragments). Its most notable feature is versification: this file's v.1 (וַיֹּאמֶר מֹשֶׁה אֶל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל...) is counted in the Jewish/BHS tradition as 30:1, closing the note begun in the festival calendar of ch. 29, whereas most English Bibles (following the Vulgate's chapter division) place it as 29:40 and begin ch. 30 at what MT numbers 30:2. Consequently MT 30:1-17 corresponds to English 29:40 + 30:1-16; the chapter's seventeen verses match the English chapter's sixteen. The legal terminology is precise and repetitive by design: נֶדֶר ('vow') and the rare אִסָּר ('binding obligation', from אסר 'to bind') are paired throughout, and אִסָּר as a noun is otherwise attested in the Hebrew Bible only here and in the closely related legal idiom of this chapter — its concentration has led some scholars to see a once-independent oath-torah assimilated into the Priestly vow legislation. The recurring הֵפֵר/הֵקִים (annul/confirm) verb pair and the בְּיוֹם שָׁמְעוֹ ('on the day he hears') same-day rule form the chapter's structural backbone and show no meaningful textual instability across witnesses.

Narrative/colophon continuationwə- (wayyiqtol)
A wayyiqtol continues the unbroken narrative sequence from Numbers 29; in English/LXX-based versification this verse is 29:40, the closing notice of the festival-offerings unit, while the MT counts it as the opening verse of ch. 30.

But if her husband indeed says nothing to her from day to day, then he has confirmed all her vows, or all her obligations that are upon her; he has confirmed them, because he said nothing to her on the day he heard them.

Extension of the same-day rule: silence sustained 'from day to day' still counts as confirmationwə-
מִיּוֹם אֶל יוֹם extends but does not repeal the same-day principle: the crucial moment remains the day of hearing (בְּיוֹם שָׁמְעוֹ, restated at the verse's end), even though the resulting silence may continue indefinitely thereafter.

וְאִם הָפֵ֥ר יָפֵ֛ר אֹתָ֖ם אַחֲרֵ֣י שָׁמְע֑וֹ וְנָשָׂ֖א אֶת עֲוֺנָֽהּ

But if he indeed annuls them after he has heard them, then he shall bear her iniquity.

The reversal: annulment after (not on) the day of hearing is illegitimate and shifts the guilt to the husbandwə-
אַחֲרֵי שָׁמְעוֹ directly opposes the chapter's repeated בְּיוֹם שָׁמְעוֹ; this is the chapter's climactic legal-ethical statement — a husband who delays cannot retroactively annul, and if he tries, he himself bears (נָשָׂא) the iniquity that results.
