The Book of Numbers, Chapter 29במדבר 29

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The seventh month crowns Israel's year with three feasts: the trumpet-blast of the first day, the Day of Atonement's self-affliction on the tenth, and Sukkot's seven-day descending bull-count (thirteen down to seven, seventy total — later read as for the seventy nations), closed by the eighth day's Atzeret, reverting to the modest one-bull baseline.

Translation & textual notes

Numbers 29 is textually stable in the MT, preserved by the tightly formulaic, highly repetitive style of the priestly sacrificial calendar (chs. 28-29), which resists the kind of scribal slippage that plagues narrative prose — recurring phrases like מִלְּבַד עֹלַת הַתָּמִיד and כַּמִּשְׁפָּט serve as internal controls a copyist could check against. The one conspicuous variation is orthographic: plural וְנִסְכֵּיהֶם (vv.6,11,18-30 etc.) alternates with the defectively-spelled וְנִסְכֵּהֶם (v.33) and the feminine-referent plural וּנְסָכֶיהָ (v.31, for the singular tamid libation) — stylistic fluctuation, not a substantive problem. The Samaritan Pentateuch and LXX broadly confirm MT's descending 13-12-11-10-9-8-7 bull sequence, the detail most vulnerable to numeral corruption in transmission, and rabbinic sources (m.Sukkah, b.Sukkah 55b) presuppose exactly this count. עֲצֶרֶת (v.35) and its semantic range (from 'closing assembly' here to later 'Shavuot' in rabbinic Hebrew) and תְּרוּעָה (v.1, later Rosh Hashanah) are noted where their later technical senses postdate this text. Chapter division follows MT versification exactly; no verse-boundary disputes arise between MT, LXX, or the Qumran fragments of Numbers.

Specifies the animal offering for the trumpet-blast day: bull-ram-seven-lambs, identical to the base set at every month's new moon (28:11) and to the eighth-day Atzeret (v.36). This modest fixed formula becomes the baseline against which Sukkot's escalating bull-count (vv.13-32) stands out.

Closes day six's notice; the plural וּנְסָכֶיהָ ('her libations', i.e. the tamid's) is a minor morphological variant of the singular וְנִסְכָּהּ used in vv.16,22,25,28,34,38 — same referent, different number agreement, no change in meaning.

New calendrical unitasyndeton
The eighth day (עֲצֶרֶת, 'Atzeret') is legally a SEPARATE festival from Sukkot's seven days, not their extension — its offering set (v.36) reverts to the modest bull/ram/seven-lambs pattern of Trumpets and Atonement, a sharp drop from day seven's seven bulls. Lev 23:36 and Neh 8:18 confirm it as a distinct 'solemn assembly' closing the entire seventh-month festival cycle.

The closing formula for the ENTIRE festival calendar of chs. 28-29, not just ch. 29 — 'these' points back through Sabbath, new moon, Passover, Firstfruits, Weeks, Trumpets, Atonement, Sukkot, and Atzeret. Crucially it distinguishes the fixed communal calendar just legislated from Israel's separate, voluntary cultic life (vows, freewill offerings, peace offerings) — the public liturgical rhythm does not exhaust or replace private devotion.
