The Book of Numbers, Chapter 2במדבר 2

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Theme

The wilderness camp is set in order around the tent of meeting: four divisions of three tribes each, every tribe under its own standard at its appointed place — Judah's camp east, Reuben's south, Ephraim's west, Dan's north, the Levites in the center — and this same formation, tribe by tribe, becomes the order of march when Israel sets out.

Translation & textual notes

Numbers 2 belongs to the priestly census-and-organization complex (chs. 1-4) and is textually one of the most stable chapters in the MT: it is almost entirely formulaic and repetitive — tribal names, standard totals, fixed phrases — which leaves little room for scribal drift, and the Samaritan Pentateuch tracks it closely. The chapter's real crux is arithmetical rather than textual: the twelve tribal totals (vv. 4, 6, 8, 11, 13, 15, 19, 21, 23, 26, 28, 30) sum precisely to the four camp totals (vv. 9, 16, 24, 31), which in turn sum to the grand total of 603,550 in v. 32 — identical to 1:46. This numerical coherence, achieved across two independently structured chapters (a flat tribal list in ch. 1, a compass-based fourfold grouping here), argues against random corruption, though the historical referent of the figures (literal census, military 'thousand'-units, or a schematic total) remains debated. A minor point of interest: v. 14's patronymic רְעוּאֵל varies from דְּעוּאֵל in 1:14, a ד/ר interchange attested elsewhere in the Hebrew Bible and not indicative of a divergent Vorlage. Likewise, the compound name צוּרִישַׁדַּי is tokenized as two words in v. 12 (צוּרִי שַׁדָּי) but written solid in v. 25's עַמִּישַׁדָּי — an orthographic, not textual, variation. The chapter's repeated key terms (מַחֲנֶה 'camp', דֶּגֶל 'standard', צָבָא 'host', פְּקֻדִים 'the mustered', נָסַע 'set out') supply much of the vocabulary used programmatically through the rest of Numbers.
