The Book of Numbers, Chapter 1במדבר 1

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

On the first of the second month of the second year, YHWH commands a census of every male twenty and up fit for war, mustered by tribe and ancestral house under twelve named chiefs; the tribal totals reach 603,550, while the Levites are exempted from the count and set instead over the tabernacle of the testimony, to camp around it and guard it.

Translation & textual notes

The Hebrew text of Numbers 1 in the Leningrad Codex (as reflected in OSHB/WLC) is well preserved; the chapter's textual apparatus is thin compared to its interpretive difficulties. Verse 16 preserves the chapter's one ketiv-qere note: the consonantal spelling qryʾy (ketiv) stands beside the marginal correction qeruʾei (qere, 'the summoned/called ones'), the only such note in the chapter. Verse 18's rare Hitpael form vayyityaldu ('they declared their lineage, registered themselves by birth') is lexically unusual, the stem occurring elsewhere mainly at Ezra 8:1, and has drawn varied renderings from the LXX onward, though the consonantal MT form itself is not in doubt. Verse 14 gives the father of Gad's chief as Deuel, against Reuel at Num 2:14 (cf. 7:42, 10:20) - a well-known scribal confusion of the similar letters dalet and resh, with no bearing on sense. The twelve parallel census notices (vv. 20-43) are formulaically stable, showing only incidental plene/defective spelling variation without affecting meaning. The chapter's deepest crux is not text-critical but semantic: the tribal totals sum to exactly 603,550, matching Exodus 38:26's independent half-shekel count, yet a war-host of this size implies a total population in the low millions, difficult to square with the wilderness narrative's logistics. This has long fed the proposal, from Petrie and Mendenhall onward, that the word 'eleph' here denotes a military or clan subunit rather than strictly 'thousand' - a reading the MT's own vocalization and construct-numeral syntax neither confirms nor excludes. The Samaritan Pentateuch and LXX track the MT's totals closely, with only isolated numeral variants across manuscripts. Versification follows the MT throughout, and no verse division in the chapter is contested.

603,550 sums the twelve tribal figures exactly and matches the half-shekel atonement-money census of Exodus 38:26, corroborating the number across two independent Priestly accounts; the figure is central to the long debate over whether אֶלֶף here means a literal 'thousand' or a smaller clan/military unit, since a war-host this size implies a total population difficult to reconcile with the wilderness setting.

But the Levites shall camp around the tabernacle of the testimony, so that there will be no wrath upon the congregation of the sons of Israel; and the Levites shall keep the charge of the tabernacle of the testimony.

The theological rationale: the Levites as a buffer against wrathוְ
קֶצֶף names the same danger later realized at Num 16:46 when Korah's rebellion provokes a plague; the Levites' encirclement of the tabernacle functions apotropaically, absorbing the risk of unauthorized approach so the wider congregation is protected — the theological center of the whole chapter's logic.

And the sons of Israel did so; according to all that YHWH had commanded Moses, so they did.

Closing compliance formula, sealing the entire chapterוַ
The doubled כְּכֹל ... כֵּן ('according to all ... so') is the standard Priestly seal of exact obedience (cf. Exod 39:32, 42-43; 40:16), here closing not just the Levites' charge but the whole chapter's business — census, roster, and sanctuary appointment alike.
