The Book of Leviticus, Chapter 8ויקרא 8

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Moses executes Exodus 29 to the letter, a refrain of exact compliance running throughout: Aaron and his sons washed, vested, anointed; a bull's blood consecrates the altar; a ram ascends whole; a second ram gives its blood to ear, thumb, and toe. Seven days of confinement complete the filling of their hands — מִלֻּאִים, ordination itself.

Translation & textual notes

Leviticus 8 is textually one of the most stable chapters in the book: the MT shows no major variants against the Samaritan Pentateuch or the versions, and the Septuagint (LXX Leuitikon 8) follows the Hebrew order and content closely, though it renders מִלֻּאִים with τελείωσις ('completion, perfecting') rather than a transliteration, already interpreting the term theologically. The chapter is best read as the narrated fulfillment of Exodus 29's instructions, and the two texts correspond almost clause for clause; where they diverge (e.g., Exodus never explicitly narrates the mixed oil-and-blood sprinkling of v. 30 as a distinct command, though it is implied in Exod 29:21) the divergence is one of scope and emphasis rather than a genuine textual problem. The sevenfold refrain כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוָּה יְהוָה (אֶת) מֹשֶׁה (vv. 4, 9, 13, 17, 21, 29, and the varied form of v. 36) is the chapter's structuring device and is stable throughout the witnesses, underscoring the priestly author's insistence that the ordination is executed without deviation. The rare technical vocabulary — פֶּדֶר (vv. 20, 25) for the fat covering, תְּנוּךְ for the ear's tip (v. 23), and above all מִלֻּאִים itself, a plurale tantum unique to this ceremony and etymologically rooted in the idiom מִלֵּא יָד ('to fill the hand,' i.e., to install in office) — is uniformly preserved and poses no significant textual difficulty, though its precise nuance has generated real exegetical discussion. A genuine, if secondary, crux is the identity of the subject of the bare, subjectless וַיִּשְׁחָט ('and he/it slaughtered') at vv. 15, 19, and 23: rabbinic and modern interpreters alike have debated whether Aaron slaughters his own ordination animals (as later law generally requires of an offerer) or whether Moses performs every act of the rite personally during this unique, transitional ceremony before the priesthood is fully constituted. Versification follows the MT throughout.

Narrative initiation — the divine command formula opening the ordination accountוַ
The wayyiqtol וַיְדַבֵּר opens the chapter with the same formula that begins nearly every legal/ritual unit in Leviticus; here it inaugurates not new legislation but the narrated execution of Exodus 29's instructions, linking chs. 8-9 to that earlier command.

The formulaic fat-portion list (entrail fat, liver lobe, two kidneys and their fat) matches the standard sin-offering procedure of 4:8-9; only these choice parts ascend in smoke, distinguishing the fate of the fat from the flesh, hide, and dung disposed of outside the camp (v. 17).

The remainder of the bull — hide, flesh, dung — is burned OUTSIDE the camp (contrast the fat's burning ON the altar, v. 16), following the rule that a purification offering whose blood enters no sanctuary interior is nonetheless wholly disposed of, never eaten (cf. 4:11-12, 6:23); the fourth refrain closes the purification-bull unit (vv. 14-17).

Narrative sequence — the burnt offering's blood riteוְ
זָרַק ('dash, toss') replaces the sin-offering's finger-application (v. 15) — the burnt- and peace-offering blood ritual is a simpler, single dashing against all four sides of the altar (cf. 1:5, 11; 3:2, 8, 13).

Unlike the sin-offering bull, the whole burnt-offering ram (head, pieces, fat) ascends in smoke, per the burnt offering's defining rule of total consumption (cf. 1:8-9, 12-13); פֶּדֶר, a rare synonym for חֵלֶב, appears only here and in v. 25.

And the entrails and the legs he washed with water, and Moses burned the whole ram on the altar. It was a burnt offering for a pleasing aroma; it was a fire offering to YHWH, as YHWH commanded Moses.

The two verbless predications (עֹלָה הוּא...אִשֶּׁה הוּא לַיהוָה) step outside the narrative flow to classify the completed rite theologically — 'pleasing aroma' language frames the offering's acceptability rather than describing divine olfaction; the fifth refrain closes the burnt-offering ram unit (vv. 18-21).

And he brought near the second ram, the ram of ordination, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram.

Narrative sequence — the third and climactic sacrifice: the ordination ramוְ
הַמִּלֻּאִים ('ordination', lit. 'the fillings') names the whole rite after this ram specifically — from מָלֵא 'to fill' via מִלֵּא יָד 'to fill the hand', the idiom for installing a priest; this sacrifice, unique to the ordination ceremony, receives the chapter's fullest procedural attention (vv. 22-29).

Narrative sequence — the ordination blood applied to Aaron's bodyוְ
Blood on ear, thumb, and big toe — the same three points used to purify the recovering leper (14:14, 17, 25, 28) — consecrates the priest's whole capacity for holy service: hearing YHWH's word, performing the rite, and walking in the sanctuary precinct.

And he took the fat, and the fat tail, and all the fat that was on the entrails, and the appendage of the liver, and the two kidneys and their fat, and the right thigh.

Narrative sequence — assembling the ordination ram's altar portionsוְ
The fat list matches the peace offering's standard formula (3:9-10) but adds the right thigh (שׁוֹק הַיָּמִין) to the altar portion — in an ordinary שְׁלָמִים the thigh instead goes to the priest (7:32-34); here, because Aaron is not yet ordained to receive priestly dues, the whole portion including the thigh ascends in smoke (see v. 28).

Placed 'on top of the burnt offering' already on the altar (v. 21), the מִלֻּאִים portion is stacked upon it rather than offered separately — the two rams' smoke rises together, and the twofold verbless predication (מִלֻּאִים הֵם...אִשֶּׁה הוּא) again pauses the narrative to classify the rite.

And Moses took the breast and waved it as an elevation offering before YHWH; it was Moses' portion from the ram of ordination, as YHWH commanded Moses.

Narrative sequence — Moses' unique priestly perquisite; sixth compliance refrainוְ
Uniquely in the sacrificial system, the breast here goes to Moses rather than to Aaron (contrast the standing rule of 7:31, where the breast belongs to 'Aaron and his sons') — a one-time exception reflecting Moses' interim priestly role before the office passes fully to Aaron's line; the sixth refrain seals the ordination-ram unit (vv. 22-29).

And Moses said to Aaron and to his sons, Boil the flesh at the entrance of the tent of meeting, and there eat it and the bread that is in the basket of ordination offerings, as I commanded, saying, Aaron and his sons shall eat it.

Moses relays YHWH's instruction for the ordination meal, quoting the divine command in first personוְ
Moses briefly speaks in YHWH's own first-person voice (צִוֵּיתִי, 'I commanded' — cf. Exod 29:32-33), a rare slippage that underscores Moses functions here purely as YHWH's mouthpiece; the priestly meal, eaten AT the sanctuary entrance rather than taken home, marks the ordination offering as most holy.

The idiom מִלֵּא יָד ('fill the hand') surfaces explicitly here (יְמַלֵּא אֶת יֶדְכֶם) as the etymological root of מִלֻּאִים itself — 'ordain' is literally 'fill the hand [with priestly service/portion]'; the causal כִּי clause explains why confinement lasts exactly seven days: the process of ordination itself takes that long.

Summary statement grounding the seven-day repetition in divine command and atoning purposeasyndeton
This verse pivots from narrating a single day's rite to prescribing its sevenfold repetition (v. 35): the day just completed becomes the template, and its ultimate purpose — לְכַפֵּר עֲלֵיכֶם, atonement for the priests themselves — is stated outright for the first time.

And at the entrance of the tent of meeting you shall remain day and night for seven days, and keep the charge of YHWH, so that you do not die; for so I have been commanded.

Continuation and conclusion of Moses' instruction — the stakes of noncomplianceוְ
The instruction closes with a passive first-person seal (צֻוֵּיתִי, 'I have been commanded') mirroring v. 31's צִוֵּיתִי — framing Moses' entire speech as relayed, not invented, command; the death-penalty warning (וְלֹא תָמוּתוּ) gives the seven-day confinement teeth, anticipating the tragedy of Nadab and Abihu in ch. 10.

Closing summary — total compliance, final formulaוְ
The chapter's closing verse substitutes אֲשֶׁר צִוָּה יְהוָה בְּיַד מֹשֶׁה for the recurring כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוָּה יְהוָה אֶת מֹשֶׁה refrain, broadening the subject from Moses alone to Aaron and his sons — the ordained priests themselves now perform in obedience, and the mediation formula 'by the hand of Moses' formally closes the ordination narrative before ch. 9's first sacrifices.
