The Book of Joshua, Chapter 13יהושע 13

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Joshua, old and commissioned to divide land Israel has not finished conquering, hears YHWH pledge 'I myself will dispossess them' before the chapter reviews Moses' prior Transjordan grants to Reuben, Gad, and half-Manasseh. Framed by a doubled refrain — Levi's true inheritance is YHWH himself, not territory — the chapter holds incompleteness and divine faithfulness together.

Translation & textual notes

Joshua 13 is textually stable in the MT and closely paralleled by the LXX, though the versions diverge in the toponym-dense boundary lists (vv.2-6, 9-31), where transmission of proper names is fragile — LXX witnesses omit several place-names and show minor variants in others (e.g. Zereth-shahar, Beth-jeshimoth); Qumran evidence for this chapter is negligible. The chapter's real critical interest is redactional rather than text-critical: vv.1-6 read as a Deuteronomistic frame (the 'to this day' idiom implicit already in v.1, and second-person divine speech in vv.2-6) laid over the older Transjordan boundary lists of vv.9-31, which closely track Numbers 32 and Deuteronomy 3. The doubled Levi notice (vv.14, 33) functions as an inclusio bracketing what was likely an independent Transjordan source, now stitched into Joshua's Cisjordan-focused conquest-and-allotment structure. YHWH's first-person pledge in v.6 ('I myself will dispossess them') and the candid admission that Geshur and Maacath persist 'in the midst of Israel to this day' (v.13) are generally read as evidence of an unusually honest editorial hand, not a later softening insertion. MT versification and chapter division are stable and match the major witnesses.

Now Joshua was old, advanced in years, and YHWH said to him: You are old, advanced in years, and very much of the land remains to be possessed.

Narrative resumption / scene-openingwə- (and/now)
The chapter opens by echoing 11:23's summary of a completed conquest, only to reverse it: Joshua's old age triggers not retirement but a divine audit of unfinished land. The doubled idiom ('old, advanced in years') frames the tension between the leader's mortality and the land's incompleteness that structures the whole chapter.
