The Book of Jeremiah, Chapter 46ירמיהו 46

אֲשֶׁ֨ר הָיָ֧ה דְבַר יְהוָ֛ה אֶל יִרְמְיָ֥הוּ הַנָּבִ֖יא עַל הַגּוֹיִֽם

The word of YHWH which came to Jeremiah the prophet against the Gentiles;

לְמִצְרַ֗יִם עַל חֵ֨יל פַּרְעֹ֤ה נְכוֹ֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ מִצְרַ֔יִם אֲשֶׁר הָיָ֥ה עַל נְהַר פְּרָ֖ת בְּכַרְכְּמִ֑שׁ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הִכָּ֗ה נְבֽוּכַדְרֶאצַּר֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ בָּבֶ֔ל בִּשְׁנַת֙ הָֽרְבִיעִ֔ית לִיהוֹיָקִ֥ים בֶּן יֹאשִׁיָּ֖הוּ מֶ֥לֶךְ יְהוּדָֽה

Against Egypt, against the army of Pharaohnecho king of Egypt, which was by the river Euphrates in Carchemish, which Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon smote in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah.

עִרְכ֤וּ מָגֵן֙ וְצִנָּ֔ה וּגְשׁ֖וּ לַמִּלְחָמָֽה

Order you the buckler and shield, and draw near to battle.

אִסְר֣וּ הַסּוּסִ֗ים וַֽעֲלוּ֙ הַפָּ֣רָשִׁ֔ים וְהִֽתְיַצְּב֖וּ בְּכ֥וֹבָעִ֑ים מִרְקוּ֙ הָֽרְמָחִ֔ים לִבְשׁ֖וּ הַסִּרְיֹנֹֽת

Harness the horses; and get up, you horsemen, and stand forth with helmets; furbish the spears, put on the brigandines.

מַדּ֣וּעַ רָאִ֗יתִי הֵ֣מָּה חַתִּים֮ נְסֹגִ֣ים אָחוֹר֒ וְגִבּוֹרֵיהֶ֣ם יֻכַּ֔תּוּ וּמָנ֥וֹס נָ֖סוּ וְלֹ֣א הִפְנ֑וּ מָג֥וֹר מִסָּבִ֖יב נְאֻם יְהוָֽה

Wherefore have I seen them dismayed turned away back? and their mighty ones are beaten down, and are fled apace, and look not back: fear round about, says YHWH.

אַל יָנ֣וּס הַקַּ֔ל וְאַל יִמָּלֵ֖ט הַגִּבּ֑וֹר צָפ֨וֹנָה֙ עַל יַ֣ד נְהַר פְּרָ֔ת כָּשְׁל֖וּ וְנָפָֽלוּ

Let not the swift flee away, nor the mighty man escape; they shall stumble, and fall toward the north by the river Euphrates.

מִי זֶ֖ה כַּיְאֹ֣ר יַֽעֲלֶ֑ה כַּנְּהָר֕וֹת יִֽתְגָּעֲשׁ֖וּ מֵימָֽיו

Who this cometh up as a flood, whose waters are moved as the rivers?

מִצְרַ֨יִם֙ כַּיְאֹ֣ר יַֽעֲלֶ֔ה וְכַנְּהָר֖וֹת יִתְגֹּ֣עֲשׁוּ מָ֑יִם וַיֹּ֗אמֶר אַֽעֲלֶה֙ אֲכַסֶּה אֶ֔רֶץ אֹבִ֥ידָה עִ֖יר וְיֹ֥שְׁבֵי בָֽהּ

Egypt riseth up like a flood, and waters are moved like the rivers; and he says, I will go up, will cover the earth; I will destroy the city and the inhabitants thereof.

עֲל֤וּ הַסּוּסִים֙ וְהִתְהֹלְל֣וּ הָרֶ֔כֶב וְיֵצְא֖וּ הַגִּבּוֹרִ֑ים כּ֤וּשׁ וּפוּט֙ תֹּפְשֵׂ֣י מָגֵ֔ן וְלוּדִ֕ים תֹּפְשֵׂ֖י דֹּ֥רְכֵי קָֽשֶׁת

Come up, you horses; and rage, you chariots; and let the mighty men come forth; the Ethiopians and the Libyans, that handle the shield; and the Lydians, that handle bend the bow.

וְֽהַיּ֨וֹם הַה֜וּא לַאדֹנָ֧י יְהוִ֣ה צְבָא֗וֹת י֤וֹם נְקָמָה֙ לְהִנָּקֵ֣ם מִצָּרָ֔יו וְאָכְלָ֥ה חֶ֨רֶב֙ וְשָׂ֣בְעָ֔ה וְרָוְתָ֖ה מִדָּמָ֑ם כִּ֣י זֶ֠בַח לַאדֹנָ֨י יְהוִ֧ה צְבָא֛וֹת בְּאֶ֥רֶץ צָפ֖וֹן אֶל נְהַר פְּרָֽת

For this the day of YHWH YHWH of hosts, a day of vengeance, that he may avenge him of his adversaries: and the sword shall devour, and it shall be satiate and made drunk with their blood: for YHWH YHWH of hosts has a sacrifice in the north country by the river Euphrates.

עֲלִ֤י גִלְעָד֙ וּקְחִ֣י צֳרִ֔י בְּתוּלַ֖ת בַּת מִצְרָ֑יִם לַשָּׁוְא֙ הרביתי הִרְבֵּ֣ית רְפֻא֔וֹת תְּעָלָ֖ה אֵ֥ין לָֽךְ

Go up into Gilead, and take balm, O virgin, the daughter of Egypt: in vain shall you use many medicines; you shall not be cured.

שָׁמְע֤וּ גוֹיִם֙ קְלוֹנֵ֔ךְ וְצִוְחָתֵ֖ךְ מָלְאָ֣ה הָאָ֑רֶץ כִּֽי גִבּ֤וֹר בְּגִבּוֹר֙ כָּשָׁ֔לוּ יַחְדָּ֖יו נָפְל֥וּ שְׁנֵיהֶֽם

The nations have heard of your shame, and your cry has filled the land: for the mighty man has stumbled against the mighty, they are fallen both together.

הַדָּבָר֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר דִּבֶּ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה אֶֽל יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ הַנָּבִ֑יא לָב֗וֹא נְבֽוּכַדְרֶאצַּר֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ בָּבֶ֔ל לְהַכּ֖וֹת אֶת אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם

The word that YHWH spake to Jeremiah the prophet, how Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon should come smite the land of Egypt.

הַגִּ֤ידוּ בְמִצְרַ֨יִם֙ וְהַשְׁמִ֣יעוּ בְמִגְדּ֔וֹל וְהַשְׁמִ֥יעוּ בְנֹ֖ף וּבְתַחְפַּנְחֵ֑ס אִמְר֗וּ הִתְיַצֵּב֙ וְהָכֵ֣ן לָ֔ךְ כִּֽי אָכְלָ֥ה חֶ֖רֶב סְבִיבֶֽיךָ

Declare you in Egypt, and publish in Migdol, and publish in Noph and in Tahpanhes: say you, Stand fast, and prepare you; for the sword shall devour round about you.

מַדּ֖וּעַ נִסְחַ֣ף אַבִּירֶ֑יךָ לֹ֣א עָמַ֔ד כִּ֥י יְהוָ֖ה הֲדָפֽוֹ

Why are your valiant swept away? they stood not, because YHWH did drive them.

הִרְבָּ֖ה כּוֹשֵׁ֑ל גַּם נָפַ֞ל אִ֣ישׁ אֶל רֵעֵ֗הוּ וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ ק֣וּמָה וְנָשֻׁ֣בָה אֶל עַמֵּ֗נוּ וְאֶל אֶ֨רֶץ֙ מֽוֹלַדְתֵּ֔נוּ מִפְּנֵ֖י חֶ֥רֶב הַיּוֹנָֽה

He made many to fall, yea, one fell upon another: and they said, Arise, and let us go again to our own people, and to the land of our nativity, from the oppressing sword.

קָרְא֖וּ שָׁ֑ם פַּרְעֹ֤ה מֶֽלֶךְ מִצְרַ֨יִם֙ שָׁא֔וֹן הֶעֱבִ֖יר הַמּוֹעֵֽד

They did cry there, Pharaoh king of Egypt a noise; he has passed the time appointed.

חַי אָ֨נִי֙ נְאֻם הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ יְהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת שְׁמ֑וֹ כִּ֚י כְּתָב֣וֹר בֶּֽהָרִ֔ים וּכְכַרְמֶ֖ל בַּיָּ֥ם יָבֽוֹא

I live, says the King, whose name YHWH of hosts, Surely as Tabor among the mountains, and as Carmel by the sea, shall he come.

כְּלֵ֤י גוֹלָה֙ עֲשִׂ֣י לָ֔ךְ יוֹשֶׁ֖בֶת בַּת מִצְרָ֑יִם כִּֽי נֹף֙ לְשַׁמָּ֣ה תִֽהְיֶ֔ה וְנִצְּתָ֖ה מֵאֵ֥ין יוֹשֵֽׁב

O you daughter dwelling in Egypt, furnish thyself to go into captivity: for Noph shall be waste and desolate without an inhabitant.

עֶגְלָ֥ה יְפֵֽה פִיָּ֖ה מִצְרָ֑יִם קֶ֥רֶץ מִצָּפ֖וֹן בָּ֥א בָֽא

Egypt a very fair heifer, destruction cometh; it cometh out of the north.

גַּם שְׂכִרֶ֤יהָ בְקִרְבָּהּ֙ כְּעֶגְלֵ֣י מַרְבֵּ֔ק כִּֽי גַם הֵ֧מָּה הִפְנ֛וּ נָ֥סוּ יַחְדָּ֖יו לֹ֣א עָמָ֑דוּ כִּ֣י י֥וֹם אֵידָ֛ם בָּ֥א עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם עֵ֥ת פְּקֻדָּתָֽם

Also her hired men in the midst of her like fatted bullocks; for they also are turned back, are fled away together: they did not stand, because the day of their calamity was come upon them, the time of their visitation.

קוֹלָ֖הּ כַּנָּחָ֣שׁ יֵלֵ֑ךְ כִּֽי בְחַ֣יִל יֵלֵ֔כוּ וּבְקַרְדֻּמּוֹת֙ בָּ֣אוּ לָ֔הּ כְּחֹטְבֵ֖י עֵצִֽים

The voice thereof shall go like a serpent; for they shall march with an army, and come against her with axes, as hewers of wood.

כָּרְת֤וּ יַעְרָהּ֙ נְאֻם יְהוָ֔ה כִּ֖י לֹ֣א יֵֽחָקֵ֑ר כִּ֤י רַבּוּ֙ מֵֽאַרְבֶּ֔ה וְאֵ֥ין לָהֶ֖ם מִסְפָּֽר

They shall cut down her forest, says YHWH, though it cannot be searched; because they are more than the grasshoppers, and innumerable.

הֹבִ֖ישָׁה בַּת מִצְרָ֑יִם נִתְּנָ֖ה בְּיַ֥ד עַם צָפֽוֹן

The daughter of Egypt shall be confounded; she shall be delivered into the hand of the people of the north.

אָמַר֩ יְהוָ֨ה צְבָא֜וֹת אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל הִנְנִ֤י פוֹקֵד֙ אֶל אָמ֣וֹן מִנֹּ֔א וְעַל פַּרְעֹה֙ וְעַל מִצְרַ֔יִם וְעַל אֱלֹהֶ֖יהָ וְעַל מְלָכֶ֑יהָ וְעַ֨ל פַּרְעֹ֔ה וְעַ֥ל הַבֹּטְחִ֖ים בּֽוֹ

YHWH of hosts, the God of Israel, says; Behold, I will punish the multitude of No, and Pharaoh, and Egypt, with their gods, and their kings; even Pharaoh, and them that trust in him:

וּנְתַתִּ֗ים בְּיַד֙ מְבַקְשֵׁ֣י נַפְשָׁ֔ם וּבְיַ֛ד נְבֽוּכַדְרֶאצַּ֥ר מֶֽלֶךְ בָּבֶ֖ל וּבְיַד עֲבָדָ֑יו וְאַחֲרֵי כֵ֛ן תִּשְׁכֹּ֥ן כִּֽימֵי קֶ֖דֶם נְאֻם יְהוָֽה

And I will deliver them into the hand of those that seek their lives, and into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of his servants: and afterward it shall be inhabited, as in the days of old, says YHWH.

וְ֠אַתָּה אַל תִּירָ֞א עַבְדִּ֤י יַֽעֲקֹב֙ וְאַל תֵּחַ֣ת יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל כִּ֠י הִנְנִ֤י מוֹשִֽׁעֲךָ֙ מֵֽרָח֔וֹק וְאֶֽת זַרְעֲךָ֖ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ שִׁבְיָ֑ם וְשָׁ֧ב יַעֲק֛וֹב וְשָׁקַ֥ט וְשַׁאֲנַ֖ן וְאֵ֥ין מַחֲרִֽיד

But fear not you, O my servant Jacob, and be not dismayed, O Israel: for, behold, I will save you from afar off, and your seed from the land of their captivity; and Jacob shall return, and be in rest and at ease, and none shall make afraid.

אַ֠תָּה אַל תִּירָ֞א עַבְדִּ֤י יַֽעֲקֹב֙ נְאֻם יְהוָ֔ה כִּ֥י אִתְּךָ֖ אָ֑נִי כִּי֩ אֶעֱשֶׂ֨ה כָלָ֜ה בְּכָֽל הַגּוֹיִ֣ם אֲשֶׁ֧ר הִדַּחְתִּ֣יךָ שָׁ֗מָּה וְאֹֽתְךָ֙ לֹא אֶעֱשֶׂ֣ה כָלָ֔ה וְיִסַּרְתִּ֨יךָ֙ לַמִּשְׁפָּ֔ט וְנַקֵּ֖ה לֹ֥א אֲנַקֶּֽךָּ

Fear you not, O Jacob my servant, says YHWH: for I with you; for I will make a full end of all the nations whither I have driven you: but I will not make a full end of you, but correct you in measure; yet will I not leave you wholly unpunished.
