The Book of Isaiah, Chapter 35ישעיהו 35

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Wilderness joy, blossoming desert, strengthened weak hands and knees, the coming of God with vengeance that is at the same time saving deliverance, opened blind eyes and unstopped deaf ears, the lame leaping and the mute singing, waters breaking out across the waste, a holy highway free from uncleanness and predatory threat, and the redeemed returning to Zion with everlasting joy together make this chapter one of Isaiah's clearest visions of restorative transformation after judgment. It opens by reversing the emotional and ecological meaning of the wilderness itself. Desert and dry land do not merely survive; they rejoice, exult, and burst into bloom like a brilliant flower. Lebanon, Carmel, and Sharon lend their glory and splendor to what had been barren, so the once-sterile landscape becomes a theater for seeing the glory of YHWH and the majesty of Israel's God. The movement then turns from vision to exhortation. Weak hands are to be strengthened, failing knees made firm, and the hasty-hearted told not to fear because God is coming. Yet the coming is described in a deliberate paradox: he comes with vengeance and recompense, but that very advent is the salvation of his people. Divine retribution against all that opposes Zion becomes the ground of courage for the threatened and the frail. From there the oracle spills into bodily restoration. Blind eyes are opened, deaf ears unstopped, the lame leap like deer, and the mute tongue rings out in joy. These healings are not isolated marvels but signs that creation itself is being renewed, because waters split open in the wilderness and torrents course through the desert plain. Arid heat becomes a pool, thirsty ground turns into springs, and the former haunt of jackals is overgrown with reeds and papyrus. The closing movement gathers that transformed world into pilgrimage. A raised highway appears there, called the Holy Way, barred to uncleanness and safe for those who belong upon it. Folly does not send travelers astray there, no lion or ravenous beast threatens the route, and the redeemed walk it in security. The final picture is Zionward return: the ransomed of YHWH come with singing, everlasting joy rests upon their heads, gladness overtakes them, and sorrow and sighing flee away. Taken together, renewed creation, embodied healing, holy passage, and joyful homecoming form a chapter where divine coming turns the aftermath of judgment into a public, communal, and cosmic restoration.

Translation & textual notes

The Hebrew base text here follows the Masoretic Text in the Leningrad tradition as represented by the Westminster Leningrad Codex / MorphHB diplomatic stream imported from OSHB; distinctively copyrighted apparatus from BHS or BHQ is not reproduced. Four linked movements shape the chapter: the rejoicing and blossoming of the wilderness as a revelation of YHWH's glory (vv. 1-2), the exhortation to strengthen the weak because God is coming with recompense and salvation (vv. 3-4), the healing and watering transformation in which blindness, deafness, lameness, muteness, and desert barrenness are all reversed together (vv. 5-7), and the establishment of the Holy Way on which the redeemed return safely to Zion with everlasting joy (vv. 8-10). Verses 1-2 should preserve the doubled emphasis on joy and blossoming. Wilderness, dry land, and desert plain are personified as rejoicing participants in restoration, and the floral image should remain vivid rather than being reduced to generic fertility. Verse 2's repetition of blossoming and the sequence of joy, exultation, and ringing cry should be allowed to accumulate. Lebanon, Carmel, and Sharon should remain named, because the oracle borrows the most luxuriant landscapes of the land to describe what has happened to the once-barren waste. The climax of the opening unit is theological: they shall see the glory of YHWH, the splendor of our God. Translation should preserve that visual culmination. Verses 3-4 turn the scene into pastoral exhortation and should remain direct. Weak hands and failing knees are conventional bodily images for discouragement and collapse, and the command to strengthen them should not be softened into vague encouragement. Verse 4 is crucial because it joins fearlessness to the divine advent. The hasty or anxious of heart are told to be strong and not fear because their God is coming. The pair נָקָם and גְּמוּל should keep both vengeance and recompense audible, yet the line must also land on the saving purpose: he himself will come and save you. Salvation is not set against judgment here; God's judicial coming is presented as the means of rescue for his people. Verses 5-7 then unfold the result in two coordinated spheres, bodily and environmental. Verse 5's opening of blind eyes and unstopping of deaf ears should retain its sensory concreteness. Verse 6 extends that to mobility and speech: the lame leap like a deer and the mute tongue cries out with joy. The causal clause beginning with כִּי matters: these healings belong to a wider new-creation setting because waters split open in the wilderness and torrents run in the desert plain. Verse 7 should preserve the reversal of the scorched land into pool and springs. The exact nuance of שָׁרָב and צִמָּאוֹן should remain tactile - burning heat and thirsty ground - while the closing image of jackal-haunt becoming grass, reed, and papyrus should keep the wetland transformation visible. Verses 8-10 describe the pilgrim result and should be translated with both holiness and safety in view. The raised road is both highway and way, and its title 'the Holy Way' should remain explicit. Verse 8's statement about the unclean not passing over it should preserve boundary language, while the phrase וְהוּא לָמוֹ is best heard as indicating that the way belongs to those for whom it is appointed. The following line should keep the strong promise that even fools will not wander off it. Verse 9 excludes lion and ravenous beast, so the journey is not merely sacred but secure. The ones who walk there are גְּאוּלִים, the redeemed. Verse 10 closes with one of Isaiah's great return formulas and should preserve both motion and emotional climax: the ransomed of YHWH return, come to Zion with singing, bear everlasting joy upon their heads, obtain gladness and joy, and leave sorrow and sighing in flight. Taken together, the passage should therefore be translated as a chapter where divine advent heals bodies, renews creation, opens a holy road, and brings the redeemed home to Zion in irreversible joy. Versification follows the MT. **Cruxes.** | Verse | Issue | | --- | --- | | none | none of note |
