The Book of Isaiah, Chapter 27ישעיהו 27

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

YHWH's visitation with hard and great sword upon Leviathan and the sea-dragon, the answering song over the delightful vineyard, vigilant divine keeping, the offer of peace in place of briars and thorns, Jacob taking root and Israel filling the world with fruit, measured chastisement rather than annihilating slaughter, atonement expressed through the pulverizing of idolatrous stones, the desolation of the fortified city, and the final one-by-one regathering of the lost and banished to worship on the holy mountain together make Isaiah 27 a fitting close to the sequence that has moved through cosmic judgment toward Zion-centered restoration. It opens at the mythic edge of history. YHWH's sword falls upon Leviathan in doubled serpent imagery and upon the dragon in the sea, so this oracle frames divine victory not merely as local politics but as the subduing of chaos-power itself. Yet it turns at once from monster judgment to vineyard song. Unlike the failed vineyard of Isaiah 5, this vineyard is one of delight, personally watched, watered, and guarded by YHWH night and day. Wrath is no longer his stance toward it; if briars and thorns arise, they are the objects of his advance unless they take hold of his stronghold and make peace with him. Restoration therefore includes both protection and a summons to reconciliation. The movement then broadens from vineyard to people. Jacob will take root, Israel will blossom and bud, and the face of the world will be filled with fruit. This fecund image matters because it answers earlier barrenness and judgment with durable, world-touching fertility. The middle verses then clarify the character of YHWH's dealings with his people. Israel has been struck, but not in the same way as its smiters; the nation has been contended with in measure and driven out with the rough east wind, yet not destroyed like its enemies. That distinction becomes theological in verse 9: Jacob's iniquity is expiated in the smashing of altar stones and the abolition of Asherim and incense altars. Forgiveness is therefore inseparable from the removal of idolatry. The desolated fortified city that follows stands as a warning counterpart, abandoned until even branches are dried and burned, because a people without understanding cannot presume upon compassion while refusing the maker who formed it. The final movement rises into harvest and pilgrimage. YHWH beats out grain from the Euphrates reach to the Wadi of Egypt, and the sons of Israel are gleaned one by one. Then a great trumpet sounds, the perishing from Assyria and the outcasts from Egypt come, and they bow before YHWH on the holy mountain in Jerusalem. Taken together, chaos victory, vineyard restoration, measured discipline, anti-idolatrous atonement, city desolation, and eschatological regathering form a closing vision where Israel is not merely spared but purified, replanted, and brought home for worship under YHWH's victorious reign.

Translation & textual notes

The Hebrew base text here follows the Masoretic Text in the Leningrad tradition as represented by the Westminster Leningrad Codex / MorphHB diplomatic stream imported from OSHB; distinctively copyrighted apparatus from BHS or BHQ is not reproduced. Six linked movements shape the chapter: YHWH's sword-judgment upon Leviathan and the dragon in the sea (v. 1), the song of the delightful vineyard kept by YHWH and offered peace (vv. 2-5), Jacob's rooting, flowering, and world-filling fruit (v. 6), the distinction between measured covenant chastisement and destructive slaughter together with the removal of idolatry (vv. 7-9), the desolation of the fortified city because of a people without understanding (vv. 10-11), and the final one-by-one gleaning and trumpet-led regathering of Israel from Assyria and Egypt to worship in Jerusalem (vv. 12-13). Verse 1 should preserve the triple force of YHWH's sword as hard, great, and strong, and the Leviathan imagery should remain vivid rather than over-domesticated. This poem deliberately uses monster and sea-dragon language to portray YHWH's sovereignty over hostile powers at the largest scale. Verses 2-5 answer that scene with song over a vineyard of delight. The imperative to sing to her should remain audible, because the movement turns from combat to lyrical care. Verse 3 is especially important: YHWH himself keeps, waters, and guards the vineyard continually. Verse 4's statement that wrath is not in him should not be flattened, though the following challenge against briars and thorns must retain its martial edge. Verse 5 then opens a real alternative in repeated peace-language: the enemy may take hold of YHWH's stronghold and make peace with him. Verse 6 broadens the image from vineyard to people and should preserve the sequence of rooting, blossoming, budding, and filling the world's face with fruit. The point is durable and abundant restoration. Verses 7-9 require careful attention to proportion and purpose in judgment. The rhetorical questions of verse 7 insist that Israel has not been struck in the same final way as those who struck it. Verse 8's difficult language should still convey measured contention and removal, associated with the rough wind in the day of the east wind. The following לכן in verse 9 interprets that discipline: Jacob's iniquity is expiated when idolatrous structures are reduced to chalk-stones crushed to pieces and no Asherim or incense altars stand. Atonement here is inseparable from decisive de-idolization. Verses 10-11 then present the abandoned fortified city as an object lesson. Its pasture-like emptiness, stripped branches, and women kindling them for fire should remain concrete. The final rationale is severe: because this is not a people of understanding, its maker does not show mercy and its former does not favor it. Translation should preserve the unsettling force of that sentence. Verses 12-13 close with harvest and pilgrimage imagery. YHWH's beating out from the channel of the River to the Wadi of Egypt should remain agricultural and territorial at once, while the sons of Israel are gathered one by one rather than as an indistinct mass. Verse 13's great trumpet should retain full summons-force, and the lost in Assyria together with the banished in Egypt should remain as the far-flung objects of restoration. The climax is liturgical: they come and worship YHWH on the holy mountain in Jerusalem. Taken together, the passage should therefore be translated as a chapter where YHWH's victory over chaos gives way to restored vineyard-care, purifying discipline, anti-idolatrous atonement, and the final regathering of Israel for worship. Versification follows the MT. **Cruxes.** | Verse | Issue | | --- | --- | | none | none of note |
