The Book of Isaiah, Chapter 20ישעיהו 20

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Sargon's campaign against Ashdod, Isaiah stripped of sackcloth and sandals, three years of naked-and-barefoot sign-bearing, the shameful deportation of Egypt and Cush, and the coastal inhabitants' cry of failed trust make Isaiah 20 one of the book's starkest acted warnings against political reliance on anti-Assyrian hopes. It opens with precise historical anchoring. The Assyrian commander comes to Ashdod under Sargon, fights against it, and captures it, so the chapter is rooted in imperial movement rather than abstract symbolism. Into that setting YHWH speaks to Isaiah and commands him to remove the sackcloth from his waist and the sandals from his feet. The prophet obeys and walks naked and barefoot, not as private eccentricity but as public prophetic embodiment. YHWH then interprets the act: for three years Isaiah's exposed condition serves as sign and portent against Egypt and Cush. The sign is severe because the fate it announces is severe. The king of Assyria will lead away the captives of Egypt and the exiles of Cush, young and old alike, naked and barefoot, with buttocks uncovered, to the shame of Egypt. It therefore attacks more than military optimism; it attacks the prestige of the very powers on which Judah and the coastlands might imagine leaning. Those who looked to Cush as hope and to Egypt as glory will be shattered and ashamed. The final voice belongs to the inhabitant of this coastland, who recognizes too late what has happened: behold, this was our expectation, where we fled for help to be delivered from the king of Assyria, and how shall we escape? Taken together, the oracle binds historical invasion, prophetic sign-act, imperial humiliation of Egypt and Cush, exposed political illusion, and the desperate question of survival into a compact warning where YHWH strips away confidence in foreign alliances by making their end visible in advance.

Translation & textual notes

The Hebrew base text here follows the Masoretic Text in the Leningrad tradition as represented by the Westminster Leningrad Codex / MorphHB diplomatic stream imported from OSHB; distinctively copyrighted apparatus from BHS or BHQ is not reproduced. Three linked movements shape the chapter: the historical notice of Ashdod's capture (v. 1), Isaiah's enacted sign and YHWH's interpretation of it (vv. 2-4), and the resulting shame and fear of those who trusted in Cush and Egypt (vv. 5-6). Verse 1 should preserve its historical specificity. Tartan, Ashdod, Sargon king of Assyria, and the capture of the city belong to the chapter's framing force, because the sign-act is set within recognizable imperial aggression. Verse 2 is equally important and should keep both the sackcloth and sandal details. The prophet's stripped condition should be translated plainly without over-softening it; the shock of the sign depends on bodily exposure and vulnerability. Verse 3 clarifies that the action lasted three years and functioned as both sign and portent against Egypt and Cush. That duration should remain explicit, because it gives the sign public persistence rather than momentary theatricality. Verse 4 then states the meaning in full. The captives of Egypt and exiles of Cush, young and old, are led away naked and barefoot with the shame of exposed buttocks. The wording should remain blunt, because humiliation is part of the announced judgment and part of the argument against trusting those powers. Verses 5-6 turn from the sign to the audience's shattered confidence. The relation between Cush as object of expectation and Egypt as object of glory or boast should remain clear, because the chapter targets prestige-politics as much as military calculation. The final line from the coastland inhabitant should preserve its startled recognition and desperate logic: if the powers to whom we fled are humiliated, what hope remains for us before Assyria? Taken together, the passage should therefore be translated as a short but forceful sign-oracle in which historical Assyrian advance, prophetic exposure, and the shaming of Egypt and Cush combine to warn Judah and its neighbors against salvation by foreign alliance. Versification follows the MT. **Cruxes.** | Verse | Issue | | --- | --- | | none | none of note |
