The Book of Isaiah, Chapter 17ישעיהו 17

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The burden concerning Damascus joins the collapse of Aram and Ephraim, the wasting of Jacob to gleanings, a brief return of human sight toward the Holy One of Israel, forgotten salvation answered by harvest-pain, and a final vision of roaring nations rebuked in an instant. It opens with a northern undoing. Damascus is removed from being a city and becomes a fallen heap, the towns of Aroer are abandoned to flocks, and the stronghold disappears from Ephraim just as kingdom-status disappears from Damascus. Aram and Israel are not treated here as stable rivals but as intertwined objects of judgment, so that what remains of Aram is compared to the fading glory of the sons of Israel. The oracle then turns from international ruin to bodily thinning. The glory of Jacob grows poor, the fatness of his flesh becomes lean, and the nation is pictured like a harvested field stripped by the reaper's arm or like olives left only in the highest boughs after beating. Yet this reduction is not sheer negation. In the day of stripping, a human being will look to his Maker and his eyes will regard the Holy One of Israel rather than the altars, Asherim, and sun-pillars fashioned by human hands. Here judgment clears sight. But that recovered sight does not soften the reason for the devastation. The fortified cities become deserted because the people forgot the God of their salvation and did not remember the rock of their refuge. Beautiful planting and foreign slips may be set out with eager cultivation and may even sprout quickly, yet the harvest proves to be a heap in the day of grief and incurable pain. What seems promising under human management collapses at the point of reaping. The final movement broadens the oracle dramatically. The many nations roar like seas and surge like mighty waters, but YHWH rebukes them and they flee far away like mountain chaff before the wind and whirling dust before the storm. Evening brings terror; before morning the threat is gone. Taken together, the oracle binds Damascus and Ephraim under one sentence, interprets Jacob's loss as a severe gleaning that may redirect sight to the Maker, exposes forgotten salvation beneath cultivated substitutes, and ends by showing that even the great roaring of the nations vanishes at a single divine rebuke.

Translation & textual notes

The Hebrew base text here follows the Masoretic Text in the Leningrad tradition as represented by the Westminster Leningrad Codex / MorphHB diplomatic stream imported from OSHB; distinctively copyrighted apparatus from BHS or BHQ is not reproduced. Five linked movements shape the oracle: Damascus and Ephraim brought low together (vv. 1-3), Jacob reduced to a gleaned remnant (vv. 4-6), renewed looking to the Maker instead of idols (vv. 7-8), fortified desolation and failed cultivation because God was forgotten (vv. 9-11), and the roaring nations silenced by divine rebuke (vv. 12-14). Verse 1 should preserve the bluntness of the superscription and announcement. Damascus is not merely threatened but removed from city-status, and the closing phrase should keep the sense of a ruinous heap rather than a merely weakened settlement. Verse 2 is textually awkward in places and should remain concrete without over-resolving every difficulty. The abandoned cities are yielded to flocks, and the image of untroubled lying down underscores depopulation rather than pastoral blessing. Verse 3 is crucial because it joins Ephraim and Damascus in one judgment frame. The stronghold ceases from Ephraim, kingdom from Damascus, and the remnant of Aram is measured against the fading glory of the sons of Israel. The comparison should remain weighty and not be paraphrased away, because it binds Aram's fate to Israel's humiliation. Verses 4-6 then move into some of the oracle's most vivid reduction imagery. The thinning of Jacob's glory and flesh in verse 4 should keep the bodily force of the Hebrew. Verse 5 compares the nation to grain reaped from standing stalks in the Valley of Rephaim, while verse 6 shifts to olive gleanings left high in the tree. The numbers there should remain concrete, because the point is that only a tiny remainder survives the beating. Verses 7-8 are the theological turn and should be translated with clear contrast. Human attention turns back to the Maker and to the Holy One of Israel, and just as importantly turns away from altars, Asherim, and sun-images produced by human hands and fingers. That restoration note is narrow but real: judgment strips away false objects of trust. Verse 9 is difficult in detail, especially in its historical comparison, but the dominant point should remain the same. Fortified cities become like abandoned wooded heights because of the sons of Israel, and desolation follows. Verses 10-11 then give the reason and one of the oracle's most pointed metaphors. The people forgot the God of their salvation and failed to remember the rock of their refuge. The planting of pleasant plants and the sowing of a foreign slip should be preserved as cultivation imagery with theological edge: what is carefully planted thrives briefly but cannot secure a true harvest. Verse 11's final line is intentionally bleak; the harvest becomes a heap in the day of sickness, inheritance-loss, or grief, and the pain is incurable. Translation should preserve that abrupt reversal from early growth to unusable yield. Verses 12-14 widen from Israel and Aram to the many nations. Their tumult must retain its sea-sound, because the repeated roaring and surging are central to the rhetoric. Yet verse 13 immediately subordinates that apparent enormity to YHWH's rebuke, after which they are chased like mountain chaff before wind and like a whirling thing before storm. Verse 14 then gives the oracle its closing suddenness: evening terror, morning disappearance. The final sentence should remain sharply proverbial, identifying this as the portion of those who plunder and despoil YHWH's people. Taken together, the passage should therefore be translated as an oracle where northern political collapse, covenantal forgetting, remnant reduction, anti-idolatrous clarification, failed cultivated substitutes, and the instant dispersal of roaring nations all serve the sovereignty of the Holy One of Israel. Versification follows the MT. **Cruxes.** | Verse | Issue | | --- | --- | | none | none of note |
