Theme

An urgent lament over Moab fills this oracle with place-names, ritual mourning, collapsing civic life, and ecological devastation. It opens with shocking speed: in a night Ar of Moab is laid waste, in a night Kir of Moab is undone. There is no slow campaign narrative here, only the stunned realization that the nation's strongholds have fallen almost at once. From there the oracle spreads grief outward across shrine, rooftop, square, and road. Dibon, Nebo, Medeba, Heshbon, Elealeh, and Jahaz all become stations in a widening soundscape of wailing. Heads are shaved, beards are cut off, sackcloth is tied on, and cries descend through public places in tears. The whole land seems to answer itself in lament. Yet it is not written with cold distance. In verse 5 the prophetic voice itself breaks in: my heart cries out for Moab. That line matters because the oracle is not a taunt of gleeful destruction. It is judgment spoken through grief, attentive to the fugitives climbing Luhith in tears and raising the cry of breaking on the road to Horonaim. The devastation then deepens into environmental failure. The waters of Nimrim become desolations, grass is dried up, vegetation is gone, and what wealth remains must be carried across the brook of the willows. The land can no longer sustain life, so mourning becomes migration. The final verses tighten the ring of lament around Moab's border and then turn the waters of Dimon red with blood. Even that is not the end, because additional disaster is appointed: a lion for the fugitives of Moab and for the remnant of the land. Taken together, the movement binds sudden nighttime ruin, liturgical and civic mourning, prophetic empathy, refugee flight, ecological collapse, and pursuing judgment into a single elegiac oracle. It shows Moab not as a distant abstraction but as a people whose entire geography has become a map of grief under the pressure of divine judgment.

Translation & textual notes

The Hebrew base text here follows the Masoretic Text in the Leningrad tradition as represented by the Westminster Leningrad Codex / MorphHB diplomatic stream imported from OSHB; distinctively copyrighted apparatus from BHS or BHQ is not reproduced. It is a lamenting burden concerning Moab, and its rhetoric depends heavily on named places, repeated cries, and a progression from urban collapse to refugee movement and ecological desolation. Four linked movements shape it: the sudden nighttime destruction of Moab's strongholds and the public eruption of mourning (vv. 1-4), the prophet's own heart-cry over Moab's fugitives and broken route of escape (v. 5), the drying of waters and forced carrying away of whatever remains (vv. 6-7), and the encircling cry that ends with blood-filled waters and further judgment on the remnant (vv. 8-9). Verse 1 should preserve the double blow of the opening. Ar and Kir of Moab are both said to be devastated in a night, and the repetition must retain its hammering effect. Verse 2 is textually and geographically dense. The ascent to the temple or high place, Dibon's weeping, and the mourning over Nebo and Medeba should all remain concrete, and the shaved heads and clipped beards must stay as visible signs of humiliation and grief. Verses 3-4 continue the soundscape of lament. Sackcloth in the streets, wailing on rooftops and in squares, and the cry of Heshbon and Elealeh being heard as far as Jahaz should be translated so that the whole civic landscape seems to resonate with sorrow. The difficult close of verse 4 should still preserve the collapse of inner strength rather than smoothing it away. Verse 5 is especially important because the speaker's stance changes: my heart cries out for Moab. That line should remain personal and arresting. The fugitives reaching Zoar and Eglath-shelishiyah, the ascent of Luhith in weeping, and the cry of destruction on the road to Horonaim all require careful retention of the geographical sequence, since the chapter imagines real movement through a ruined land. Verses 6-7 turn the lament toward environmental devastation. The waters of Nimrim become desolations; grass, vegetation, and green growth disappear. That should not be treated as decorative background, because it explains why surviving wealth and stores must be carried away across the brook of the willows. Verses 8-9 circle the border of Moab with a cry heard from Eglaim to Beer-elim. The final image is severe: the waters of Dimon are full of blood, and still more is appointed. The added lion for the fugitives and for the remnant should remain startling and unresolved, because the oracle closes not with relief but with pursuing danger. Taken together, it should be translated as an elegy of place-name mourning, prophetic sympathy, exhausted flight, environmental loss, and uncompleted judgment hanging over the survivors.
