The Book of Genesis, Chapter 24בראשית 24

וְאַבְרָהָ֣ם זָקֵ֔ן בָּ֖א בַּיָּמִ֑ים וַֽיהוָ֛ה בֵּרַ֥ךְ אֶת אַבְרָהָ֖ם בַּכֹּֽל

And Abraham was old, advanced in days, and YHWH had blessed Abraham in everything.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אַבְרָהָ֗ם אֶל עַבְדּוֹ֙ זְקַ֣ן בֵּית֔וֹ הַמֹּשֵׁ֖ל בְּכָל אֲשֶׁר ל֑וֹ שִֽׂים נָ֥א יָדְךָ֖ תַּ֥חַת יְרֵכִֽי

And Abraham said to his servant, the elder of his house, the one ruling over all that was his, "Put, please, your hand under my thigh,

וְאַשְׁבִּ֣יעֲךָ֔ בַּֽיהוָה֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם וֵֽאלֹהֵ֖י הָאָ֑רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֨ר לֹֽא תִקַּ֤ח אִשָּׁה֙ לִבְנִ֔י מִבְּנוֹת֙ הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֔י אֲשֶׁ֥ר אָנֹכִ֖י יוֹשֵׁ֥ב בְּקִרְבּֽוֹ

and I will make you swear by YHWH, God of the heavens and God of the earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanite among whom I dwell,

כִּ֧י אֶל אַרְצִ֛י וְאֶל מוֹלַדְתִּ֖י תֵּלֵ֑ךְ וְלָקַחְתָּ֥ אִשָּׁ֖ה לִבְנִ֥י לְיִצְחָֽק

but you shall go to my land and to my kindred, and you shall take a wife for my son, for Isaac."

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלָיו֙ הָעֶ֔בֶד אוּלַי֙ לֹא תֹאבֶ֣ה הָֽאִשָּׁ֔ה לָלֶ֥כֶת אַחֲרַ֖י אֶל הָאָ֣רֶץ הַזֹּ֑את הֶֽהָשֵׁ֤ב אָשִׁיב֙ אֶת בִּנְךָ֔ אֶל הָאָ֖רֶץ אֲשֶׁר יָצָ֥אתָ מִשָּֽׁם

And the servant said to him, "Perhaps the woman will not be willing to come after me to this land. Must I then indeed take your son back to the land from which you came out?"

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֵלָ֖יו אַבְרָהָ֑ם הִשָּׁ֣מֶר לְךָ֔ פֶּן תָּשִׁ֥יב אֶת בְּנִ֖י שָֽׁמָּה

And Abraham said to him, "Take heed to yourself, lest you bring my son back there.

יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֣י הַשָּׁמַ֗יִם אֲשֶׁ֨ר לְקָחַ֜נִי מִבֵּ֣ית אָבִי֮ וּמֵאֶ֣רֶץ מֽוֹלַדְתִּי֒ וַאֲשֶׁ֨ר דִּבֶּר לִ֜י וַאֲשֶׁ֤ר נִֽשְׁבַּֽע לִי֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר לְזַ֨רְעֲךָ֔ אֶתֵּ֖ן אֶת הָאָ֣רֶץ הַזֹּ֑את ה֗וּא יִשְׁלַ֤ח מַלְאָכוֹ֙ לְפָנֶ֔יךָ וְלָקַחְתָּ֥ אִשָּׁ֛ה לִבְנִ֖י מִשָּֽׁם

YHWH, God of the heavens, who took me from my father house and from the land of my kindred, and who spoke to me and who swore to me, saying, “To your seed I will give this land,” he will send his angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there.

וְאִם לֹ֨א תֹאבֶ֤ה הָֽאִשָּׁה֙ לָלֶ֣כֶת אַחֲרֶ֔יךָ וְנִקִּ֕יתָ מִשְּׁבֻעָתִ֖י זֹ֑את רַ֣ק אֶת בְּנִ֔י לֹ֥א תָשֵׁ֖ב שָֽׁמָּה

And if the woman is not willing to go after you, then you shall be clear from this oath of mine; only my son you must not bring back there."

וַיָּ֤שֶׂם הָעֶ֨בֶד֙ אֶת יָד֔וֹ תַּ֛חַת יֶ֥רֶךְ אַבְרָהָ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֑יו וַיִּשָּׁ֣בַֽע ל֔וֹ עַל הַדָּבָ֖ר הַזֶּֽה

And the servant placed his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master and swore to him concerning this matter.

וַיִּקַּ֣ח הָ֠עֶבֶד עֲשָׂרָ֨ה גְמַלִּ֜ים מִגְּמַלֵּ֤י אֲדֹנָיו֙ וַיֵּ֔לֶךְ וְכָל ט֥וּב אֲדֹנָ֖יו בְּיָד֑וֹ וַיָּ֗קָם וַיֵּ֛לֶךְ אֶל אֲרַ֥ם נַֽהֲרַ֖יִם אֶל עִ֥יר נָחֽוֹר

And the servant took ten camels from the camels of his master and went, with every good thing of his master in his hand; and he arose and went to Aram-naharaim, to the city of Nahor.

וַיַּבְרֵ֧ךְ הַגְּמַלִּ֛ים מִח֥וּץ לָעִ֖יר אֶל בְּאֵ֣ר הַמָּ֑יִם לְעֵ֣ת עֶ֔רֶב לְעֵ֖ת צֵ֥את הַשֹּׁאֲבֹֽת

And he made the camels kneel outside the city by the well of water at evening time, at the time when the women who draw water go out.

וַיֹּאמַ֓ר יְהוָ֗ה אֱלֹהֵי֙ אֲדֹנִ֣י אַבְרָהָ֔ם הַקְרֵה נָ֥א לְפָנַ֖י הַיּ֑וֹם וַעֲשֵׂה חֶ֕סֶד עִ֖ם אֲדֹנִ֥י אַבְרָהָֽם

And he said, "O YHWH, God of my master Abraham, cause it to happen before me today, and show covenant kindness with my master Abraham.

הִנֵּ֛ה אָנֹכִ֥י נִצָּ֖ב עַל עֵ֣ין הַמָּ֑יִם וּבְנוֹת֙ אַנְשֵׁ֣י הָעִ֔יר יֹצְאֹ֖ת לִשְׁאֹ֥ב מָֽיִם

Behold, I am standing by the spring of water, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water.

וְהָיָ֣ה הַֽנַּעֲרָ֗ אֲשֶׁ֨ר אֹמַ֤ר אֵלֶ֨יהָ֙ הַטִּי נָ֤א כַדֵּךְ֙ וְאֶשְׁתֶּ֔ה וְאָמְרָ֣ה שְׁתֵ֔ה וְגַם גְּמַלֶּ֖יךָ אַשְׁקֶ֑ה אֹתָ֤הּ הֹכַ֨חְתָּ֙ לְעַבְדְּךָ֣ לְיִצְחָ֔ק וּבָ֣הּ אֵדַ֔ע כִּי עָשִׂ֥יתָ חֶ֖סֶד עִם אֲדֹנִֽי

And let it happen that the young woman to whom I shall say, “Please let down your jar that I may drink,” and who says, “Drink, and I will also give your camels water,” let her be the one you have appointed for your servant, for Isaac; and by her I shall know that you have shown covenant kindness with my master."

וַֽיְהִי ה֗וּא טֶרֶם֮ כִּלָּ֣ה לְדַבֵּר֒ וְהִנֵּ֧ה רִבְקָ֣ה יֹצֵ֗את אֲשֶׁ֤ר יֻלְּדָה֙ לִבְתוּאֵ֣ל בֶּן מִלְכָּ֔ה אֵ֥שֶׁת נָח֖וֹר אֲחִ֣י אַבְרָהָ֑ם וְכַדָּ֖הּ עַל שִׁכְמָֽהּ

And it happened, before he had finished speaking, that behold, Rebekah was coming out, who had been born to Bethuel son of Milcah, wife of Nahor, Abraham brother, and her jar was on her shoulder.

וְהַֽנַּעֲרָ֗ טֹבַ֤ת מַרְאֶה֙ מְאֹ֔ד בְּתוּלָ֕ה וְאִ֖ישׁ לֹ֣א יְדָעָ֑הּ וַתֵּ֣רֶד הָעַ֔יְנָה וַתְּמַלֵּ֥א כַדָּ֖הּ וַתָּֽעַל

And the young woman was very good in appearance, a virgin, and no man had known her; and she went down to the spring and filled her jar and came up.

וַיָּ֥רָץ הָעֶ֖בֶד לִקְרָאתָ֑הּ וַיֹּ֕אמֶר הַגְמִיאִ֥ינִי נָ֛א מְעַט מַ֖יִם מִכַּדֵּֽךְ

And the servant ran to meet her and said, "Please let me sip a little water from your jar."

וַתֹּ֖אמֶר שְׁתֵ֣ה אֲדֹנִ֑י וַתְּמַהֵ֗ר וַתֹּ֧רֶד כַּדָּ֛הּ עַל יָדָ֖הּ וַתַּשְׁקֵֽהוּ

And she said, "Drink, my lord," and she hurried and lowered her jar upon her hand and gave him drink.

וַתְּכַ֖ל לְהַשְׁקֹת֑וֹ וַתֹּ֗אמֶר גַּ֤ם לִגְמַלֶּ֨יךָ֙ אֶשְׁאָ֔ב עַ֥ד אִם כִּלּ֖וּ לִשְׁתֹּֽת

And when she had finished giving him drink, she said, "I will also draw for your camels, until they have finished drinking."

וַתְּמַהֵ֗ר וַתְּעַ֤ר כַּדָּהּ֙ אֶל הַשֹּׁ֔קֶת וַתָּ֥רָץ ע֛וֹד אֶֽל הַבְּאֵ֖ר לִשְׁאֹ֑ב וַתִּשְׁאַ֖ב לְכָל גְּמַלָּֽיו

And she hurried and emptied her jar into the trough and ran again to the well to draw, and she drew for all his camels.

וְהָאִ֥ישׁ מִשְׁתָּאֵ֖ה לָ֑הּ מַחֲרִ֕ישׁ לָדַ֗עַת הַֽהִצְלִ֧יחַ יְהוָ֛ה דַּרְכּ֖וֹ אִם לֹֽא

And the man gazed at her in silence, to know whether YHWH had made his journey succeed or not.

וַיְהִ֗י כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר כִּלּ֤וּ הַגְּמַלִּים֙ לִשְׁתּ֔וֹת וַיִּקַּ֤ח הָאִישׁ֙ נֶ֣זֶם זָהָ֔ב בֶּ֖קַע מִשְׁקָל֑וֹ וּשְׁנֵ֤י צְמִידִים֙ עַל יָדֶ֔יהָ עֲשָׂרָ֥ה זָהָ֖ב מִשְׁקָלָֽם

And it happened, when the camels had finished drinking, that the man took a gold ring, a half-shekel its weight, and two bracelets for her hands, ten shekels of gold their weight,

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ בַּת מִ֣י אַ֔תְּ הַגִּ֥ידִי נָ֖א לִ֑י הֲיֵ֧שׁ בֵּית אָבִ֛יךְ מָק֥וֹם לָ֖נוּ לָלִֽין

and said, "Whose daughter are you? Please tell me. Is there in your father house a place for us to spend the night?"

וַתֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֔יו בַּת בְּתוּאֵ֖ל אָנֹ֑כִי בֶּן מִלְכָּ֕ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר יָלְדָ֖ה לְנָחֽוֹר

And she said to him, "I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor."

וַתֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֔יו גַּם תֶּ֥בֶן גַּם מִסְפּ֖וֹא רַ֣ב עִמָּ֑נוּ גַּם מָק֖וֹם לָלֽוּן

And she said to him, "Both straw and much fodder are with us, and also a place to spend the night."

וַיִּקֹּ֣ד הָאִ֔ישׁ וַיִּשְׁתַּ֖חוּ לַֽיהוָֽה

And the man bowed his head and worshiped YHWH,

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר בָּר֤וּךְ יְהוָה֙ אֱלֹהֵי֙ אֲדֹנִ֣י אַבְרָהָ֔ם אֲ֠שֶׁר לֹֽא עָזַ֥ב חַסְדּ֛וֹ וַאֲמִתּ֖וֹ מֵעִ֣ם אֲדֹנִ֑י אָנֹכִ֗י בַּדֶּ֨רֶךְ֙ נָחַ֣נִי יְהוָ֔ה בֵּ֖ית אֲחֵ֥י אֲדֹנִֽי

and said, "Blessed be YHWH, God of my master Abraham, who has not forsaken his covenant kindness and his truth from with my master. As for me, on the way YHWH has led me to the house of my master brothers."

וַתָּ֨רָץ֙ הַֽנַּעֲרָ֔ וַתַּגֵּ֖ד לְבֵ֣ית אִמָּ֑הּ כַּדְּבָרִ֖ים הָאֵֽלֶּה

And the young woman ran and told her mother house according to these words.

וּלְרִבְקָ֥ה אָ֖ח וּשְׁמ֣וֹ לָבָ֑ן וַיָּ֨רָץ לָבָ֧ן אֶל הָאִ֛ישׁ הַח֖וּצָה אֶל הָעָֽיִן

And Rebekah had a brother, and his name was Laban; and Laban ran out to the man, to the spring.

וַיְהִ֣י כִּרְאֹ֣ת אֶת הַנֶּ֗זֶם וְֽאֶת הַצְּמִדִים֮ עַל יְדֵ֣י אֲחֹתוֹ֒ וּכְשָׁמְע֗וֹ אֶת דִּבְרֵ֞י רִבְקָ֤ה אֲחֹתוֹ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר כֹּֽה דִבֶּ֥ר אֵלַ֖י הָאִ֑ישׁ וַיָּבֹא֙ אֶל הָאִ֔ישׁ וְהִנֵּ֛ה עֹמֵ֥ד עַל הַגְּמַלִּ֖ים עַל הָעָֽיִן

And it happened, when he saw the ring and the bracelets on his sister hands, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, “Thus the man spoke to me,” that he came to the man; and behold, he was standing by the camels at the spring.

וַיֹּ֕אמֶר בּ֖וֹא בְּר֣וּךְ יְהוָ֑ה לָ֤מָּה תַעֲמֹד֙ בַּח֔וּץ וְאָנֹכִי֙ פִּנִּ֣יתִי הַבַּ֔יִת וּמָק֖וֹם לַגְּמַלִּֽים

And he said, "Come in, blessed of YHWH. Why do you stand outside? As for me, I have prepared the house and a place for the camels."

וַיָּבֹ֤א הָאִישׁ֙ הַבַּ֔יְתָה וַיְפַתַּ֖ח הַגְּמַלִּ֑ים וַיִּתֵּ֨ן תֶּ֤בֶן וּמִסְפּוֹא֙ לַגְּמַלִּ֔ים וּמַ֨יִם֙ לִרְחֹ֣ץ רַגְלָ֔יו וְרַגְלֵ֥י הָאֲנָשִׁ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר אִתּֽוֹ

And the man came into the house, and he unloaded the camels and gave straw and fodder to the camels, and water to wash his feet and the feet of the men who were with him.

ויישם וַיּוּשַׂ֤ם לְפָנָיו֙ לֶאֱכֹ֔ל וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ לֹ֣א אֹכַ֔ל עַ֥ד אִם דִּבַּ֖רְתִּי דְּבָרָ֑י וַיֹּ֖אמֶר דַּבֵּֽר

And food was set before him to eat, but he said, "I will not eat until I have spoken my words." And he said, "Speak."

וַיֹּאמַ֑ר עֶ֥בֶד אַבְרָהָ֖ם אָנֹֽכִי

And he said, "I am Abraham servant."

וַיהוָ֞ה בֵּרַ֧ךְ אֶת אֲדֹנִ֛י מְאֹ֖ד וַיִּגְדָּ֑ל וַיִּתֶּן ל֞וֹ צֹ֤אן וּבָקָר֙ וְכֶ֣סֶף וְזָהָ֔ב וַעֲבָדִם֙ וּשְׁפָחֹ֔ת וּגְמַלִּ֖ים וַחֲמֹרִֽים

And YHWH has blessed my master greatly, and he has become great; and he has given him flocks and cattle and silver and gold and male servants and female servants and camels and donkeys.

וַתֵּ֡לֶד שָׂרָה֩ אֵ֨שֶׁת אֲדֹנִ֥י בֵן֙ לַֽאדֹנִ֔י אַחֲרֵ֖י זִקְנָתָ֑הּ וַיִּתֶּן לּ֖וֹ אֶת כָּל אֲשֶׁר לֽוֹ

And Sarah, the wife of my master, bore a son to my master after her old age, and he gave to him all that was his.

וַיַּשְׁבִּעֵ֥נִי אֲדֹנִ֖י לֵאמֹ֑ר לֹא תִקַּ֤ח אִשָּׁה֙ לִבְנִ֔י מִבְּנוֹת֙ הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֔י אֲשֶׁ֥ר אָנֹכִ֖י יֹשֵׁ֥ב בְּאַרְצֽוֹ

And my master made me swear, saying, “You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanite in whose land I dwell,

אִם לֹ֧א אֶל בֵּית אָבִ֛י תֵּלֵ֖ךְ וְאֶל מִשְׁפַּחְתִּ֑י וְלָקַחְתָּ֥ אִשָּׁ֖ה לִבְנִֽי

but you shall go to my father house and to my family, and you shall take a wife for my son.”

וָאֹמַ֖ר אֶל אֲדֹנִ֑י אֻלַ֛י לֹא תֵלֵ֥ךְ הָאִשָּׁ֖ה אַחֲרָֽי

And I said to my master, “Perhaps the woman will not come after me.”

וַיֹּ֖אמֶר אֵלָ֑י יְהוָ֞ה אֲשֶׁר הִתְהַלַּ֣כְתִּי לְפָנָ֗יו יִשְׁלַ֨ח מַלְאָכ֤וֹ אִתָּךְ֙ וְהִצְלִ֣יחַ דַּרְכֶּ֔ךָ וְלָקַחְתָּ֤ אִשָּׁה֙ לִבְנִ֔י מִמִּשְׁפַּחְתִּ֖י וּמִבֵּ֥ית אָבִֽי

And he said to me, “YHWH, before whom I have walked, will send his angel with you and make your way succeed; and you shall take a wife for my son from my family and from my father house.

אָ֤ז תִּנָּקֶה֙ מֵאָ֣לָתִ֔י כִּ֥י תָב֖וֹא אֶל מִשְׁפַּחְתִּ֑י וְאִם לֹ֤א יִתְּנוּ֙ לָ֔ךְ וְהָיִ֥יתָ נָקִ֖י מֵאָלָתִֽי

Then you shall be clear from my oath, when you come to my family; and if they do not give to you, then you shall be clear from my oath.”

וָאָבֹ֥א הַיּ֖וֹם אֶל הָעָ֑יִן וָאֹמַ֗ר יְהוָה֙ אֱלֹהֵי֙ אֲדֹנִ֣י אַבְרָהָ֔ם אִם יֶשְׁךָ נָּא֙ מַצְלִ֣יחַ דַּרְכִּ֔י אֲשֶׁ֥ר אָנֹכִ֖י הֹלֵ֥ךְ עָלֶֽיהָ

And I came today to the spring and said, “O YHWH, God of my master Abraham, if now you are making my way succeed, the way on which I am going,

הִנֵּ֛ה אָנֹכִ֥י נִצָּ֖ב עַל עֵ֣ין הַמָּ֑יִם וְהָיָ֤ה הָֽעַלְמָה֙ הַיֹּצֵ֣את לִשְׁאֹ֔ב וְאָמַרְתִּ֣י אֵלֶ֔יהָ הַשְׁקִֽינִי נָ֥א מְעַט מַ֖יִם מִכַּדֵּֽךְ

behold, I am standing by the spring of water; and let it be that the young woman who comes out to draw, and to whom I say, “Please let me drink a little water from your jar,”

וְאָמְרָ֤ה אֵלַי֙ גַּם אַתָּ֣ה שְׁתֵ֔ה וְגַ֥ם לִגְמַלֶּ֖יךָ אֶשְׁאָ֑ב הִ֣וא הָֽאִשָּׁ֔ה אֲשֶׁר הֹכִ֥יחַ יְהוָ֖ה לְבֶן אֲדֹנִֽי

and who says to me, “You drink, and I will also draw for your camels,” let her be the woman whom YHWH has appointed for my master son.”

אֲנִי֩ טֶ֨רֶם אֲכַלֶּ֜ה לְדַבֵּ֣ר אֶל לִבִּ֗י וְהִנֵּ֨ה רִבְקָ֤ה יֹצֵאת֙ וְכַדָּ֣הּ עַל שִׁכְמָ֔הּ וַתֵּ֥רֶד הָעַ֖יְנָה וַתִּשְׁאָ֑ב וָאֹמַ֥ר אֵלֶ֖יהָ הַשְׁקִ֥ינִי נָֽא

Before I had finished speaking in my heart, behold, Rebekah was coming out with her jar on her shoulder, and she went down to the spring and drew; and I said to her, “Please let me drink.”

וַתְּמַהֵ֗ר וַתּ֤וֹרֶד כַּדָּהּ֙ מֵֽעָלֶ֔יהָ וַתֹּ֣אמֶר שְׁתֵ֔ה וְגַם גְּמַלֶּ֖יךָ אַשְׁקֶ֑ה וָאֵ֕שְׁתְּ וְגַ֥ם הַגְּמַלִּ֖ים הִשְׁקָֽתָה

And she hurried and lowered her jar from upon her and said, “Drink, and I will also give your camels water.” And I drank, and she also gave the camels water.

וָאֶשְׁאַ֣ל אֹתָ֗הּ וָאֹמַר֮ בַּת מִ֣י אַתְּ֒ וַתֹּ֗אמֶר בַּת בְּתוּאֵל֙ בֶּן נָח֔וֹר אֲשֶׁ֥ר יָֽלְדָה לּ֖וֹ מִלְכָּ֑ה וָאָשִׂ֤ם הַנֶּ֨זֶם֙ עַל אַפָּ֔הּ וְהַצְּמִידִ֖ים עַל יָדֶֽיהָ

And I asked her and said, “Whose daughter are you?” And she said, “The daughter of Bethuel son of Nahor, whom Milcah bore to him.” And I put the ring on her nose and the bracelets on her hands.

וָאֶקֹּ֥ד וָֽאֶשְׁתַּחֲוֶ֖ה לַיהוָ֑ה וָאֲבָרֵ֗ךְ אֶת יְהוָה֙ אֱלֹהֵי֙ אֲדֹנִ֣י אַבְרָהָ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֤ר הִנְחַ֨נִי֙ בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ אֱמֶ֔ת לָקַ֛חַת אֶת בַּת אֲחִ֥י אֲדֹנִ֖י לִבְנֽוֹ

And I bowed and worshiped YHWH, and I blessed YHWH, the God of my master Abraham, who led me in the way of truth to take the daughter of my master brother for his son.

וְ֠עַתָּה אִם יֶשְׁכֶ֨ם עֹשִׂ֜ים חֶ֧סֶד וֶֽאֱמֶ֛ת אֶת אֲדֹנִ֖י הַגִּ֣ידוּ לִ֑י וְאִם לֹ֕א הַגִּ֣ידוּ לִ֔י וְאֶפְנֶ֥ה עַל יָמִ֖ין א֥וֹ עַל שְׂמֹֽאל

And now, if you are dealing with covenant kindness and truth with my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, that I may turn to the right hand or to the left.”

וַיַּ֨עַן לָבָ֤ן וּבְתוּאֵל֙ וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ מֵיְהוָ֖ה יָצָ֣א הַדָּבָ֑ר לֹ֥א נוּכַ֛ל דַּבֵּ֥ר אֵלֶ֖יךָ רַ֥ע אוֹ טֽוֹב

And Laban and Bethuel answered and said, “The matter has come forth from YHWH; we are not able to speak to you bad or good.”

הִנֵּֽה רִבְקָ֥ה לְפָנֶ֖יךָ קַ֣ח וָלֵ֑ךְ וּתְהִ֤י אִשָּׁה֙ לְבֶן אֲדֹנֶ֔יךָ כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר דִּבֶּ֥ר יְהוָֽה

Behold, Rebekah is before you; take and go, and let her become wife to your master's son, just as YHWH has spoken.”

וַיְהִ֕י כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר שָׁמַ֛ע עֶ֥בֶד אַבְרָהָ֖ם אֶת דִּבְרֵיהֶ֑ם וַיִּשְׁתַּ֥חוּ אַ֖רְצָה לַֽיהוָֽה

And it happened, when Abraham's servant heard their words, that he bowed himself to the ground before YHWH.

וַיּוֹצֵ֨א הָעֶ֜בֶד כְּלֵי כֶ֨סֶף וּכְלֵ֤י זָהָב֙ וּבְגָדִ֔ים וַיִּתֵּ֖ן לְרִבְקָ֑ה וּמִ֨גְדָּנֹ֔ת נָתַ֥ן לְאָחִ֖יהָ וּלְאִמָּֽהּ

And the servant brought out articles of silver and articles of gold and garments, and gave them to Rebekah; and he gave precious gifts to her brother and to her mother.

וַיֹּאכְל֣וּ וַיִּשְׁתּ֗וּ ה֛וּא וְהָאֲנָשִׁ֥ים אֲשֶׁר עִמּ֖וֹ וַיָּלִ֑ינוּ וַיָּק֣וּמוּ בַבֹּ֔קֶר וַיֹּ֖אמֶר שַׁלְּחֻ֥נִי לַֽאדֹנִֽי

And they ate and drank, he and the men who were with him, and they spent the night; and they arose in the morning, and he said, “Send me away to my master.”

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אָחִ֨יהָ֙ וְאִמָּ֔הּ תֵּשֵׁ֨ב הַנַּעֲרָ֥ אִתָּ֛נוּ יָמִ֖ים א֣וֹ עָשׂ֑וֹר אַחַ֖ר תֵּלֵֽךְ

And her brother and her mother said, “Let the young woman stay with us days, or ten; afterward she may go.”

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֲלֵהֶם֙ אַל תְּאַחֲר֣וּ אֹתִ֔י וַֽיהוָ֖ה הִצְלִ֣יחַ דַּרְכִּ֑י שַׁלְּח֕וּנִי וְאֵלְכָ֖ה לַֽאדֹנִֽי

And he said to them, “Do not delay me, since YHWH has prospered my way; send me away, that I may go to my master.”

וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ נִקְרָ֣א לַֽנַּעֲרָ֑ וְנִשְׁאֲלָ֖ה אֶת פִּֽיהָ

And they said, “Let us call the young woman and ask her own mouth.”

וַיִּקְרְא֤וּ לְרִבְקָה֙ וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ אֵלֶ֔יהָ הֲתֵלְכִ֖י עִם הָאִ֣ישׁ הַזֶּ֑ה וַתֹּ֖אמֶר אֵלֵֽךְ

And they called Rebekah and said to her, “Will you go with this man?” And she said, “I will go.”

וַֽיְשַׁלְּח֛וּ אֶת רִבְקָ֥ה אֲחֹתָ֖ם וְאֶת מֵנִקְתָּ֑הּ וְאֶת עֶ֥בֶד אַבְרָהָ֖ם וְאֶת אֲנָשָֽׁיו

And they sent away Rebekah their sister and her nurse and Abraham's servant and his men.

וַיְבָרֲכ֤וּ אֶת רִבְקָה֙ וַיֹּ֣אמְרוּ לָ֔הּ אֲחֹתֵ֕נוּ אַ֥תְּ הֲיִ֖י לְאַלְפֵ֣י רְבָבָ֑ה וְיִירַ֣שׁ זַרְעֵ֔ךְ אֵ֖ת שַׁ֥עַר שֹׂנְאָֽיו

And they blessed Rebekah and said to her, “Our sister, may you become thousands of myriads, and may your seed possess the gate of those who hate him.”

וַתָּ֨קָם רִבְקָ֜ה וְנַעֲרֹתֶ֗יהָ וַתִּרְכַּ֨בְנָה֙ עַל הַגְּמַלִּ֔ים וַתֵּלַ֖כְנָה אַחֲרֵ֣י הָאִ֑ישׁ וַיִּקַּ֥ח הָעֶ֛בֶד אֶת רִבְקָ֖ה וַיֵּלַֽךְ

And Rebekah and her young women arose and rode on the camels and went after the man; and the servant took Rebekah and went.

וְיִצְחָק֙ בָּ֣א מִבּ֔וֹא בְּאֵ֥ר לַחַ֖י רֹאִ֑י וְה֥וּא יוֹשֵׁ֖ב בְּאֶ֥רֶץ הַנֶּֽגֶב

And Isaac had come from going to Beer-lahai-roi, and he was dwelling in the land of the Negeb.

וַיֵּצֵ֥א יִצְחָ֛ק לָשׂ֥וּחַ בַּשָּׂדֶ֖ה לִפְנ֣וֹת עָ֑רֶב וַיִּשָּׂ֤א עֵינָיו֙ וַיַּ֔רְא וְהִנֵּ֥ה גְמַלִּ֖ים בָּאִֽים

And Isaac went out to meditate in the field toward evening, and he lifted up his eyes and saw, and behold, camels were coming.

וַתִּשָּׂ֤א רִבְקָה֙ אֶת עֵינֶ֔יהָ וַתֵּ֖רֶא אֶת יִצְחָ֑ק וַתִּפֹּ֖ל מֵעַ֥ל הַגָּמָֽל

And Rebekah lifted up her eyes and saw Isaac, and she alighted from upon the camel.

וַתֹּ֣אמֶר אֶל הָעֶ֗בֶד מִֽי הָאִ֤ישׁ הַלָּזֶה֙ הַהֹלֵ֤ךְ בַּשָּׂדֶה֙ לִקְרָאתֵ֔נוּ וַיֹּ֥אמֶר הָעֶ֖בֶד ה֣וּא אֲדֹנִ֑י וַתִּקַּ֥ח הַצָּעִ֖יף וַתִּתְכָּֽס

And she said to the servant, “Who is that man walking in the field to meet us?” And the servant said, “He is my master.” And she took the veil and covered herself.

וַיְסַפֵּ֥ר הָעֶ֖בֶד לְיִצְחָ֑ק אֵ֥ת כָּל הַדְּבָרִ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשָֽׂה

And the servant recounted to Isaac all the matters that he had done.

וַיְבִאֶ֣הָ יִצְחָ֗ק הָאֹ֨הֱלָה֙ שָׂרָ֣ה אִמּ֔וֹ וַיִּקַּ֧ח אֶת רִבְקָ֛ה וַתְּהִי ל֥וֹ לְאִשָּׁ֖ה וַיֶּאֱהָבֶ֑הָ וַיִּנָּחֵ֥ם יִצְחָ֖ק אַחֲרֵ֥י אִמּֽוֹ

And Isaac brought her into the tent of Sarah his mother, and he took Rebekah, and she became his wife, and he loved her; and Isaac was comforted after his mother.
