The Book of Genesis, Chapter 23בראשית 23

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Climactic testing in Genesis 22 gives way here to the sober work of grief, legal negotiation, and burial in the land of promise. Sarah's death, Abraham's mourning, his self-description as resident alien, the public courtesy of the Hittites, the formal purchase of the cave of Machpelah, and the first fully secured burial holding in Canaan are bound together in a deliberately weighty sequence. The emotional register is restrained but serious: Sarah dies, Abraham rises from mourning to negotiate, and the promise-bearing family takes possession of land not through conquest or gift but through witnessed payment. The narrative therefore matters not only as obituary or real-estate record. It marks the transition from wandering promise to legally recognized foothold in the land, and it frames burial itself as an act of faith in the pledged inheritance. What emerges is an account of covenant grief and durable possession: Sarah is mourned, Machpelah is acquired, and Abraham secures in death what he still only awaits in fullness for the living line.

Translation & textual notes

The Hebrew base text here follows the Masoretic Text in the Leningrad tradition as represented by the Westminster Leningrad Codex / MorphHB diplomatic stream imported from OSHB; distinctively copyrighted apparatus from BHS or BHQ is not reproduced. Unusually important for both narrative theology and legal texture, this chapter slows the Abraham story into a carefully witnessed burial acquisition. Verse 1's age notice for Sarah is expansive and solemn, and the repeated 'years' formulation should be preserved with its full cadence. Verse 2's identification of Kiriath-arba, that is Hebron, anchors the narrative geographically and retrospectively within the patriarchal land setting. Verse 4 is especially significant: Abraham calls himself a 'resident alien and settler' among the Hittites, and the pair גר ותושב should retain its social and legal sharpness rather than being flattened into a generic outsider label. The Hittites' address to Abraham in verse 6 as a 'prince of God' is honorific and interpretively weighty, publicly acknowledging his stature without yet changing his legal standing. The repeated bowing scenes in verses 7 and 12 should be preserved as part of the narrative's formal public etiquette. Verses 8-16 are full of ancient transactional idiom: the request to intercede with Ephron, the apparent offer of a gift, Abraham's insistence on payment, and the naming of four hundred shekels of silver all belong to a recognized negotiation form rather than to simple sentimental generosity. Verse 15's 'what is that between me and you?' should not be read as indifference to money, since verse 16 immediately records the weighed payment. Verse 16's silver 'passing to the merchant' signals standard commercial currency and formalizes the sale. Verses 17-18 and 20 are legal-style confirmations, carefully listing field, cave, trees, boundaries, witnesses, and transfer. Verse 19 then narrates Sarah's burial in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre, that is Hebron, in the land of Canaan, so the burial site becomes a material sign of promised inheritance. Versification follows the MT.
