The Book of Exodus, Chapter 36שמות 36

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Construction begins in earnest: the people's freewill giving so overflows that Moses must proclaim a halt — generosity so abundant it must be restrained — and Bezalel's craftsmen weave the cherubim curtains, layer the goat-hair and hide coverings, and raise the acacia-and-silver frame that gives the tabernacle its standing form.

Translation & textual notes

The Masoretic text of Exodus 36 is well preserved, standing in close, at times nearly verbatim, parallel with the instructions of Exodus 26 (and, for vv.1-7, with the craftsman-summons of Exodus 35:30-35). The dominant textual/grammatical phenomenon is systematic and deliberate: wherever Exodus 26 gave a second-person command (תַּעֲשֶׂה 'you shall make', or the weqatal וְעָשִׂיתָ), Exodus 36 reports the identical content as third-person narrative of completed action (wayyiqtol וַיַּעַשׂ / perfect עָשָׂה), the Torah's clearest sustained instruction-to-fulfillment transformation. Minor, non-substantive verbal variants recur where ch.36 substitutes the numeral idiom אַחַת אֶל אֶחָת ('one to another') for ch.26's אִשָּׁה אֶל אֲחֹתָהּ ('each to her sister') in the curtain-joining formulas (vv.10,12,13), and where proper names, word order, and minor orthography vary slightly between witnesses — none of it affecting sense. Theologically and text-critically unique to this chapter is the 'more than enough' episode of vv.5-7: the only place in the Pentateuch where the people's freewill generosity so exceeds what the sanctuary's construction requires that Moses must proclaim a halt (וַיִּכָּלֵא הָעָם מֵהָבִיא, 'the people were restrained from bringing'), an ironic and deliberate counterpoint to every other wilderness narrative of scarcity and complaint.

Bezalel and Oholiab, and every wise-hearted man in whom the LORD had put wisdom and understanding to know how to do all the work of the service of the sanctuary, shall work according to all that the LORD commanded.

Resumptive summary (bridges instruction and narrative)asyndeton
Resumes the craftsman-list of Exod 35:30-35 with a weqatal (ועשה, ‘shall work’) that still carries the force of a charge; the relative clause underscores that the wisdom enabling the work was itself divinely given, so that what follows is obedient execution of God's own gift and command.

Narrative main line — continuation (execution of Exod 26:32)וַ
Details the veil's supporting apparatus — gold-plated acacia pillars with gold hooks on silver sockets — matching the frame-wall's own gold-and-silver grading (vv.20-34) and establishing the standard against which the outer screen's lesser bronze sockets (v.38) will be measured.

Turns from the interior veil to the tent's outer entrance screen: the same four materials recur, but the craftsmanship drops from the veil's woven-in cherubim design to mere embroidery, marking a graded scale of holiness that Exod 26:36 itself established.

Closes the chapter and movement F: the screen's pillars are only partially gilded (tops and bands) and stand on bronze sockets, not silver — the Torah's clearest structural symbol of graded holiness, decreasing from gold at the ark to bronze at the tabernacle's outermost threshold, exactly as Exod 26:37 specified.
