The Book of Exodus, Chapter 27שמות 27

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The bronze altar of burnt offering stands foursquare with horns and a bronze grating, while a linen-hung court a hundred by fifty cubits, with one embroidered gate, encloses the sanctuary. The chapter closes with Israel's charge to supply oil so Aaron keeps the lamp burning continually, a perpetual statute for every generation.

Translation & textual notes

This chapter's Hebrew base text follows the Masoretic Leningrad tradition as represented by the Westminster Leningrad Codex / MorphHB diplomatic stream imported from OSHB; distinctively copyrighted BHS/BHQ apparatus is not reproduced. The chapter's dense technical vocabulary for altar and court hardware (מִזְבֵּחַ, מִכְבָּר, קַרְנֹת, כַּרְכֹּב, עַמּוּדִים, אֲדָנִים, קְלָעִים) is largely hapax or near-hapax within the Torah, so renderings lean on later priestly usage (Leviticus, Numbers) and on the parallel execution-report in Exodus 38 for confirmation. The most notable textual crux is in v.11, where the consonantal Kethiv ועמדו (a defective, unpointed spelling) stands immediately beside its own Masoretic correction, the fully pointed Qere וְעַמּוּדָיו 'and its pillars' — a doublet unique to this verse, resolved identically by the ancient versions. The chapter's closing unit (vv.20-21) introduces the recurring 'continually / perpetual statute' idiom: the lamp is to burn תָּמִיד ('continually,' echoing the technical עֹלַת תָּמִיד, 'regular burnt offering,' of 29:38-42) under a חֻקַּת עוֹלָם ('perpetual statute') binding Aaron's priestly line לְדֹרֹתָם ('throughout their generations') — the standard Priestly formula sealing a cultic ordinance as permanently in force.

You shall make the altar of acacia wood, five cubits long and five cubits wide — the altar shall be square — and three cubits high.

Opens the chapter's first major section, the bronze altar of burnt offering, resuming the weqatal instructional chain from the preceding tent and veil specifications (ch. 26) and fixing the altar's square five-cubit base and three-cubit height before any of its features are detailed.
