The Book of Deuteronomy, Chapter 30דברים 30

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Moses turns from covenant sanctions to covenant future: exile need not be final, for Israel's return to YHWH is met by YHWH's own greater return, climaxing in the promise that God himself will circumcise the heart. The word is near, not remote — in the mouth and the heart. Israel stands before the ultimate choice: life or death, blessing or curse. Choose life.

Translation & textual notes

Deuteronomy 30 is textually stable in the Masoretic tradition; the Samaritan Pentateuch and the 4QDeut fragments show only minor orthographic variation, none affecting sense. The chapter's central crux is grammatical rather than text-critical: veshav YHWH eloheykha et-shevutkha (v. 3) uses the idiom shuv shevut, traditionally 'restore the captivity/fortunes'; the construction is fientive (an act performed upon a situation), not merely stative ('when fortunes return of themselves'). Comparative usage at Jer 29:14; 30:3, 18; 31:23; 32:44; 33:7, 11, 26; Ezek 39:25; Hos 6:11; Amos 9:14; Zeph 3:20 supports a general idiom of covenant reversal rather than a technical term restricted to return from Babylonian exile — a datum weighed heavily in debates over the chapter's date. The archaic spelling hiv for the 3fs pronoun (vv. 12, 13 bis) beside the commoner hi is a Kethiv feature the Masoretes left uncorrected, typical of Deuteronomy's orthographic conservatism. In v. 4 niddachakha is a Niphal singular participle with 2ms suffix ('your outcast one'), collective in force though grammatically singular; ancient versions render it with plural sense, but no MT witness alters the consonants. Versification follows the standard MT numbering throughout, with no MT/LXX chapter-division divergence in ch. 30.
