The Book of Deuteronomy, Chapter 18דברים 18

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Levi's priesthood is cultic, not territorial -- YHWH himself is their inheritance, funded by fire offerings and firstfruits. The chapter then bans Canaanite divination outright (its fullest catalogue: diviners, mediums, necromancers) and answers it with Israel's true channel of revelation, the prophet like Moses, before supplying the test for distinguishing his authentic word from presumptuous counterfeit: fulfillment or failure.

Translation & textual notes

The MT of Deuteronomy 18 is textually stable, preserved essentially unchanged across the Qumran witnesses and the Samaritan Pentateuch, though several exegetical cruxes recur in the commentary tradition. The rare pausal 2fs-form suffix in v.9's לָךְ (addressed to the nation/individual) reflects an orthographic peculiarity found sporadically in early Hebrew, not a scribal error or change of addressee. The nine-term divination catalogue of vv.10-11 preserves several rare professional titles (מְעוֹנֵן, מְנַחֵשׁ, חֹבֵר חָבֶר) whose precise techniques are lost and reconstructed mainly from cognate Semitic usage and later rabbinic testimony. The most consequential crux is v.15's נָבִיא: the LXX renders with a singular προφήτην matching the MT, supporting the New Testament's singular, individualized reading of the promise (Acts 3:22; 7:37) as messianic, even though the wider Deuteronomic frame (a prophet arising after Moses, e.g. 34:10) also supports a collective, ongoing-office reading in later Jewish tradition. Versification follows the MT throughout; the LXX and Vulgate track the same verse divisions.

The Levitical priests -- the whole tribe of Levi -- shall have no portion or inheritance with Israel; they shall eat the fire offerings of YHWH, which is his inheritance.

Asyndetic opening of a new legal topicasyndeton
The chapter opens abruptly, without connective, on the priests' lack of tribal inheritance -- a sharp topical break from the land-allotment material of the preceding chapters. The wordplay between the denied נַחֲלָה of v.1a and YHWH's own נַחֲלָה that becomes the priests' food in v.1b frames the whole pericope: Levi's compensation is cultic, not territorial.

Restatement narrowing v.1's tribal principle to the individual Leviteand
The vav-initial clause specifies v.1's tribal statement for the individual: no Levite receives a territorial share; instead YHWH himself is his נַחֲלָה, a claim grounded (כַּאֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר) in a prior divine word, tying this legislation to earlier promises (cf. Num 18:20; Deut 10:9).

The chapter's summit: the promise of the prophet like Mosesasyndeton
This is Deuteronomy's most quoted messianic text (Acts 3:22; 7:37): against the backdrop of the forbidden occult channels, YHWH promises a legitimate prophetic mediator 'like Moses' -- from Israel's own midst -- to whom absolute obedience (תִּשְׁמָעוּן) is owed; the verse both answers v.14's contrast and anticipates the grounding narrative of v.16.

The verse flashes back to Exodus 20:18-21/Deuteronomy 5:23-27, quoting Israel's own fearful request at the theophany: the people, unable to bear direct divine address, asked for a mediator. The promised prophet of v.15 is thus not a novel institution but the fulfillment of Israel's own petition -- a channel of revelation that spares them unmediated divine confrontation.

Delivers the empirical criterion for identifying false prophecy: non-fulfillmentasyndeton
The chapter's final test is pragmatic, not merely charismatic: a prophetic claim proves false when 'the word does not happen or come about' -- retroactive verification rather than a rule for advance discernment, a tension the tradition wrestled with (cf. Jer 28) but which nonetheless de-fangs presumptuous claims after the fact, closing with the reassurance 'do not be afraid of him'.
